H/T to Dolly

Longtime Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) announced Tuesday that he won't seek reelection in 2014.

Wolf's departure gives Democrats a great pickup opportunity in 2014. Wolf has easily held down the Northern Virginia suburbs and exurbs for decades, despite their increasing purple tone.

Democrats have already recruited Fairfax County Supervisor John Foust for the race. Among the Republicans being mentioned shortly after Wolf's retirement was state Del. Barbara Comstock, state Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel and former congressman Artur Davis, who recently switched from Democrat to Republican and moved from Alabama to Northern Virginia.

This is a great pickup opportunity for the Democrats. John Foust is a good recruit who has posted some impressive margins of victory. The GOP is probably going to coalesce around Delegate Barbara Comstock after firebrand Dick Black dropped out. Comstock only won reelection last year by 1.5 points (400 votes) even though she sits in a heavily-gerrymandered seat (like virtually every other Republican) in the House of Delegates. This race is a true toss-up. The 10th CD is an R+2 district that was made a little more Republican by the state GOP after the last round of redistricting. It went for Obama 51%-48% in 2008 but went for Romney 50%-49% last year, and Ken Cuccinelli carried it 48%-47% in 2013's gubernatorial election. The turnout will be a little better this year and with Mark Warner at the top of the ballot the Democrats have a good chance to make a pickup here if Foust can run a good campaign.
