Grimm Indictment Moves NY-11 to Lean Democratic

This morning, former FBI agent and Staten Island GOP Rep. Michael Grimm turned himself into federal authorities and was indicted on 20 counts including mail and wire fraud, filing false tax returns, perjury and obstruction relating to his ownership of a health food restaurant prior to his 2010 election to Congress. As such, we are moving the rating of NY-11 to Lean Democratic.

New York's 11th congressional district

The 11th district includes all of Staten Island and parts of southern Brooklyn, including the neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, and Gravesend. Politically, it is the most conservative district in New York City, the only district in the city which leans towards the Republican Party in national elections, and the only district covering part of the city to be represented by a Republican. The district has significant Jewish, Irish-American, Russian-American, and Italian-American populations.

From 2003-2013, the district was located entirely in Brooklyn, and had a majority African-American population. Most of the old 11th is now the 9th District. Prior to 2013, most of the territory currently in the 11th had been the 13th District.

Grimm Steps Down From House Committee Following Indictment

Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY) stepped down from the House Financial Services Committee on Monday, after he was indicted on multiple fraud charges.

In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, Grimm requested that he be removed from the committee. Grimm writes that he would like to take up an active role on the committee again after his legal matters are resolved.

A spokesman for Boehner said that the Speaker approved of Grimm's decision.

"The Speaker believes Rep. Grimm’s decision is appropriate under the circumstances," spokesman Michael Steel said in a statement.

Rothenberg also moved this race to "Leans Democratic," but in all honesty this was a toss-up race before Grimm was indicted. Domenic Recchia has been waging one hell of a campaign and he already has a million dollars in a bank, the only negative is that he's from "the wrong part of the district."If Recchia faces Grimm (either because he's defiant, or because it'll be hard to get him off the ballot unless the NYGOP nominate him for a judgeship) then he'll win this race. The head start that he'd get if the Conservative Party has to pick another nominee might also be enough to generate a Dem win. The Republicans really do need to somehow field the perfect candidate, find a magical way to get Grimm's name off the ballot, have their nominee run the perfect campaign, and hope that there's no coattails upballot for Recchia. We have a great shot to pick up this seat. This, plus Gary Miller's California seat, means that we're basically still 0-0 after we factor in the likely losses of the gerrymandered seats being vacated due to the retirements of Matheson and McIntyre. Not a bad place for the Dems to be at this stage.

I wouldn't count Grimm out if he does run for re-election. Staten Island Republicans are very good at getting their voters into the voting booth.

Too true, Mike. But if the North and East Shores miraculously exert themselves, combining with the Brooklyn sector, Recchia's chances look decent. {SMILIES_PATH}/pray.gif

Republican leaders shut off cash to Grimm, report says

WASHINGTON -- House Republican leaders are shutting off the financial support they've previously offered Rep. Michael Grimm, the New York Post reports.

Grimm, who was indicted Monday on charges he concealed more than $1 million in gross receipts and hundreds of thousands of dollars in employees' wages while operating an Upper East Side health food restaurant he owned before entering politics, will effectively have to fend for himself in his re-election bid against Democrat Domenic Recchia Jr.

"As long as these legal issues are playing out there, we're going to hold off," National Republican Congressional Committee chairman Greg Walden told The Post, in reference to cash infusions for the embattled lawmaker.

Adding, "We have to look where we can go win seats. In any race, certain dynamics cause you to re-evaluate. And certainly a 20-count indictment causes you to re-evaluate."

Grimm has been bounced from the NRCC's "Patriot Program," and disinvited from one of the program's upcoming fundraising events next month, the Daily News reports. The Patriot Program helps Republicans in swing districts raise campaign cash.

GOP Rep. Michael Grimm loses campaign manager

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- GOP Rep. Michael Grimm's campaign manager has left the team.

Guy Molinari, a top advisor to Grimm, on Friday night said that Bill Cortese left the campaign "a few days ago."

But Molinari said that the departure of Cortese after a "couple of months" on the team was not a sign of a campaign in trouble. "It wasn't like there was a blowup," Molinari said. "He was looking to move on. He had another opportunity. It was with our blessing."

The news came the same day as an announcement that the House Ethics Committee had formed an investigative subcommittee to probe Grimm the wake of his 20-count indictment on federal tax evasion and other charges. The subcommittee will defer any investigation until the Justice Department finishes with Grimm.

Republican leaders shut off cash to Grimm, report says

WASHINGTON -- House Republican leaders are shutting off the financial support they've previously offered Rep. Michael Grimm, the New York Post reports.

Embattled Rep. Michael G. Grimm, R-N.Y., is struggling to fundraise for his campaign after a federal indictment, according to reports filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission.

Grimm brought in $47,000 for his campaign between April 1 and June 4, according to his pre-primary fundraising report.

That’s far less than the $144,000 that his Democratic opponent, former New York City Councilmember Domenic M. Recchia Jr., raised in the same period.

[/break1]rollcall.com/michael-grimm-fundraising-struggles/?dcz=]http://atr.rollcall.com/michael-grimm-f ... gles/?dcz=Grimm and Recchia both have approximately $1million in the bank but Grimm has to be concerned about when is the best time to spend funds that he may not be able to replace, other than writing his campaign a check.

Former girlfriend of indicted Staten Island Congressman Michael Grimm in plea talks with federal prosecutors

Indicted Staten Island Congressman Michael Grimm’s former girlfriend is in plea talks with the feds to resolve her own criminal charges of violating campaign finance laws.

A federal prosecutor revealed Wednesday that Diana Durand’s case may be resolved with a guilty plea during a hearing in Brooklyn Federal Court, in which Durand was also apprised that her defense lawyers Stuart Kaplan and Joseph Sconzo may have a conflict of interest because they were FBI colleagues of Grimm.

Kaplan also donated $1,500 to Grimm’s campaign in 2009, according to court papers. ...

Durand, of Texas, is charged with allegedly contributing more than $100,000 to Grimm’s 2010 campaign in the names of straw donors. Kaplan has previously acknowledged that she did not know it was illegal to reimburse donors. ...

Prosecutors had requested the hearing to ensure that she understood that her lawyers may have “divided loyalties” and might advise her not to cooperate with the government in order to protect Grimm.

Michael Grimm has decided to resign from Congress days after pleading guilty: sources

WASHINGTON — Rep. Michael Grimm has decided to resign from Congress in the wake of his guilty plea on a felony tax evasion charge, sources told the Daily News Monday night.

Grimm (R-S.I.) said after he entered his plea last week that he planned to continue serving in the House.

But he reversed course after speaking Monday to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who has taken a hard line on GOPers facing ethics charges.

Grimm plans to announce his resignation on Tuesday or Wednesday, sources said.
