Illinois GOP official pens allegedly racist attack on black GOP candidate

A county Republican Party chairman in central Illinois called a black female congressional candidate the “love child” of the Democratic party; a “street walker” whose “pimps” are party leaders; and suggested that after the election, she will be “working for some law firm that needs to meet their quota for minority hires.”

And it's a Republican candidate he's talking about.

Montgomery County GOP Chairman Jim Allen wrote the comments in an email to a Republican website, regarding Erika Harold. She is the former Miss America and Harvard Law grad who is seeking the Republican nomination for the 13th Congressional District, which stretches from Champaign to the Metro East.

The episode is an illustration of the unusual state of the GOP in Illinois, where the party tends to fight with itself more than it does with the ruling Democrats.

Allen is a supporter of incumbent U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Taylorville, whom Harold is challenging for the GOP nomination next year. Allen's letter appears today on RepublicanNewsWatch, an independent website by conservative Republicans who have challenged the more moderate GOP party leaders in the state.

GOP official out after ‘racist rant’ about fmr. Miss America ...

Harold’s opponent, incumbent Rep. Rodney Davis, disavowed Allen’s remarks and removed his name from the list of supporters on the Davis campaign website, following questioning from the Post-Dispatch.

Jack Dorgan, chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, said that he “accepted the resignation of Jim Allen as Montgomery County chairman” in a statement posted on the state GOP’s Facebook page.

“These types of offensive and inappropriate remarks have no place in our Republican Party,” said Dorgan.

Dorgan was joined in his criticism by other GOP officials, who have acknowledged the need to improve their party’s standing with women and minority voters. In a 100-page autopsy report on the GOP’s 2012 loss, the RNC pledged $10 million to improving minority outreach.

“The astonishingly offensive views expressed by Chairman Allen have absolutely no place among the leaders of our party at any level,” said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Preibus. “His behavior is inexcusable and must not be tolerated.”

I'm sure there are many dents in various walls and desks around Republican Party offices these days, from the beating of heads against them. ](*,) They have a primary candidate - she might not have won, but she was running - who was someone that any party would be happy to have running: Young, intelligent, top law school graduate, former Miss America, black. Particularly all the demographics that the Republican Party has identified as needing outreach to. {SMILIES_PATH}/pray.gif Then, lo and behold, along comes a county chair to announce that the perception of the party as being made up of "racist old white men" isn't ... incorrect. ?(

Rodney Davis' poor performance against a candidate with no money, no elected experience, and no campaign infrastructure was absolutely pitiful. Ann Callis has a real shot to take this seat for the Democrats in November.
