A new thread for gaffe-prone Mr. Sanctimonious.Watching him dig his way out of the "theology" disaster has been ... interesting. I adore the way Santorum spokeswoman Alice Stewart tried to explain it on MSNBC yesterday. Yeah, sure, easy to see how one could confuse "environmental" and "Islamic." Making the election about religion is going to backfire.

I saw this yesterday. Santorum Spokesman Not a Fan of Obama’s ‘Radical Islamic’ Environmental PoliciesAlice Stewart, a spokeswoman for the Santorum campaign, was on MSNBC today to do damage control after Rick Santorum seemed to question President Obama's religious faith over the weekend. Instead, she made one of the most hilarious Freudian slips we've heard in a long time when she referred to Obama's "radical Islamic" energy policies. Stewart later called up MSNBC to clarify that she did not mean to say that, out loud, in public. #-o video at the link.[/break1]com/daily/intel/2012/02/santorum-radical-islamic-obama-alice-stewart.html]http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/02/sa ... ewart.htmlThen Jezabel posted about Santorum's WTF moments yesterday:Rick Santorum’s Mardi Gras of WTFGOP Presidential hopeful and grimacing zealot Rick Santorum celebrated President's Day by unleashing a series of jaw-dropping absurdity almost majestic in scale. From chastising Obama for not governing America with Biblical values to calling for an end to public schools, it was a veritable celebration of fuckery. Let's tour the inanity. On Saturday, Santorum told a crowd that public schools are relics of the Industrial Revolution, that they're akin to factory work for children and that they should be abolished. So, who should be educating America's children? The parents, of course! Santorum told the crowd that if hell freezes over and figure skating pigs with wings take over the netherworld and he's elected President, he'll be homeschooling his kids as well. Because it's the right way to do things. No one asked Rick Santorum how America's families were supposed to find the time or money to homeschool, as home schooling often requires at least one parent to be at home schooling the wee ones rather than working, but I'm sure in his addled mind, the reason most American families can't afford to home school is because of sluts. Or gays. Or slutty gays. It's always about the slutty gays with this one.Santorum also managed to find time for a little bit of birther paranoia in his busy schedule, telling a crowd in Columbus, Ohio, that President Obama wasn't running America using Biblical values. Of Obama's agenda, he told the crowd, "It's not about your quality of life. It's not about your jobs. It's about some phony ideal. Some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology."[...] :-? remainder:[/break1]com/5886533/rick-santorums-mardi-gras-of-wtf]http://jezebel.com/5886533/rick-santoru ... ras-of-wtfAnd, today a new Ron Paul ad asks "Is This Dude Serious?" I guess Ron Paul is taking Santorum seriously. I wouldn't care if either Ron Paul or Rick Santorum got the nomination. Neither has a snowball's chance against Obama.

I have never seen anything like this campaign. It is obvious that many Republicans want anyone other than [highlight]$Rmoney[/highlight] but when someone rises in the polls to challenge him they seem to all simultaneously have a WTF moment and say we can't nominate this guy. It has happened at least 3 times with Perry, Cain, and Gingrich and I see signs of it happening with Santorum.

What on Earth is this "theological secularism". In my native tongue, that is an oxymoron; perhaps one that would generate a huge exothermic reaction when assembled.

How the non-belief in a God or gods becomes a religion belongs in the same mindset as birtherism as far as I can tell. YMMV

Ironicly Catholic doctrine states that when you are a politician you should focus on doing your job rather than legislating to tyour faith mainly as you have enough trouble serving the people that elected you without worring about your faith as well. No I dont have a link

Anyway on the Rmoney think I know where that started

This is what went out on stage

Hardline evangelicals do not consider Catholics or Mormons to be Christians. Seriously. Just ask them. Ironically, Newt, Santorum and Romney are sinners to them. Maybe the evangelicals don't want to hold their nose and vote. And so they're calling up Palin and begging her to make a run.

 The editor HAD to know what he/she was doing with this headline...[link]Santorum blasts Obama during Cumming rally,http://www.accessnorthga.com/detail.php?n=245894[/link]By Jerry Gunn StaffThe former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator delivered, for the most part, a ‘God and Country’ speechCUMMING - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke to an overflow audience at the giant First Redeemer Church in Cumming Sunday night during what was billed as a ‘God and Country’ rally. The former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator delivered, for the most part, a ‘God and Country’ speech, pitting himself and his conservative audience against what he termed the liberal, socialist Obama administration. He offered voters a choice on Super Tuesday.“Someone who can clearly go after President Obama on issue after issue, draw clear bright contrasts, make him accountable for the record he has,” Santorum said. "That’s your choice, two weeks from Tuesday."An estimated 3,000 people filled the church to hear Santorum blast Obama policies that he said threaten personal freedom and cherished institutions.(...)

Maybe the evangelicals don't want to hold their nose and vote. And so they're calling up Palin and begging her to make a run.A significant fraction of evangelicals who support Santorum do not even recognize that he is Catholic. Washington Post Feb. 25, 2012 [link]"Santorum, a Catholic often mistaken for evangelical, benefits from confusion and shared goals",http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/ ... story.html[/link]

In the world in which I would like to live, a candidate's religion or lack of religion makes no difference. Santorum has made it an issue, but so have many evangelicals and some Catholics. Republicans have been building the alliance between evangelicals and conservative Catholics and the Republican Party for decades.

In the world in which I would like to live, a candidate's religion or lack of religion makes no difference.Come to Europe (well, not everywhere but nearly...)That is a very realistic possibility. If I would not have been a distance from my kids and grandkids, I might have moved somewhere there in 2000. A Santorum or Gingrich election would seal my decision. So would an escalation of political violence.[Canada would be a good choice as well, but I am not sure that I would qualify under Canadian immigration laws.]
