Rob Andrews to resign

Longtime New Jersey Rep. Rob Andrews will announce that he is leaving Congress, according to multiple senior Democrats.

Andrews has represented the heavily Democratic Philadelphia-area suburbs since 1990.

Andrews has been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for allegedly misusing campaign funds for personal use. Allegations include that he used campaign funds to pay for a family trip to Scotland. A special four-member investigative subcommittee was appointed to look into the case a year ago, but it is unclear if that panel had made any recommendations for action to the full Ethics Committee.

The New Jersey Democrat began quietly telling friends on Monday night of his decision to resign, sources said, and he plans an announcement at 11:30 a.m. at his Haddon Heights, N.J. office.

State Sen. Donald Norcross may announce as early as today that he will run for this seat, Democratic sources said.

New Jersey Power Broker's Brother Announces Shoo-In Bid For Andrews' Seat

Just a few hours after Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ) announced his his plan to retire amidst a congressional ethics inquiry, state Sen. Donald Norcross (D), the brother of arguably the most powerful Democratic Party boss in the state, threw his hat in the ring as a likely successor.

"I am running for Congress because South Jersey needs someone who is going to stand up for us in Washington, D.C., as Rob Andrews has done for more than two decades," Norcross said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

The Democratic state senator is the brother of one of New Jersey's major party bosses, George Norcross, who Philadelphia magazine described as having "enormous political power." The magazine noted that Norcross was able to escape a criminal investigation in the early 2000s.

Lawmakers are already coalescing around Norcross.

This is unfortunate. It's a safe Democratic seat but it would suck to see it go to someone that will only make the Jersey machine stronger. Norcross is who allowed Chris Christie to become Chris Christie, the last thing the House Democratic caucus needs is another member who does whatever's convenient for himself.

As long as he caucuses with the Democrats I don't give a shit.(Of course, that's because it's not my district. I don't want Sandra Fluke and she will probably caucus with the Democrats. But I can't be sure. She might become a Greenie.)

Sandra Fluke is running for the California State Senate seat being vacated by Lieu, she isn't running for a U.S. House seat. There's no reason for anyone to back Norcross in such a solidly Democratic seat, we could win it with practically any competent nominee. That's why it's so discouraging to see so many people from the state immediately backing him and/or vowing to stay out of the race. They're trading a Rep. that somehow managed to become close with the party's leadership for someone who's not going to help the party whatsoever because he'll be so busy trying to further help his brother and the same corrupt, cowardly people who run New Jersey.
