Arkansas GOP Rep. Tim Griffin Won't Seek Third Term

Tim Griffin's campaign says the Republican congressman won't seek a third term representing central Arkansas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Campaign manager David Ray says Griffin won't run for re-election. A formal announcement is expected later Monday. The surprise announcement came just days after Griffin said he'd raised more than $208,000 for his re-election bid in the third quarter.

In November, Griffin was named to the powerful U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, becoming the first Republican from Arkansas to serve on the tax-writing panel. At the time, Griffin said he wouldn't run for Arkansas governor or the U.S. Senate because of the appointment.

There's no way this is unrelated to recent events. And maybe he sees the writing on the wall

He's had ethics problems in the past. Many folks are taking a "wait and see what kind of screw up is behind this one" as he has gathered quite a bit of re-election cash from all those Social Security checks. Now - he pulls a half-Palin as he is finishing his term.

Rep. Tim Griffin (R-Ark.) will retire after two terms in office to spend more time with his family, he tells The Hill. [/break1]com/blogs/ballot-box/house-races/329553-rep-tim-griffin-to-retire]http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/hou ... -to-retireSince the follow-up article to these types of comments often involves either an AUSA announcing his latest indictment or something better suited for one of Larry Flynt's magazines than the New York Times, I'll withhold comment for the time being.

Pat Hayes was actually a really good get for us. Few states have turned harder against the Democrats (and faster) than Arkansas but we actually have a really strong slate of candidates running in November. This year will tell us all we need to know about how competitive we will be in AR moving forward. Pryor is the best statewide candidate we could have, Mike Beebe is the best get we could have landed to try to keep the governor's mansion, and Hayes + James Lee Witt have fundraised well in the races for the two open seats. They might not win, in fact all of them could easily lose, but I think the cumulative effect of all of them running strong campaigns could help Pryor eek out a win at the top of the ticket at least. That in itself would be a massive victory for Arkansas, Senate Democrats, and the entire Democratic party.
