2016 US Senate: Oklahoma

Sen Tom Coburn (R-OK) announced he is leaving the Senate 2 years prior to his term expiring. Coburn is a Class III Senator whose term expires Jan 3, 2017.

Sen. Tom Coburn, who has spent a combined 15 years here rooting out government waste and warning about mounting U.S. debt, will resign after the current session of Congress, foregoing the final two years of his term.

Coburn, R-Muskogee, has been battling a recurrence of prostate cancer but said he wasn't leaving early because of his health.

Coburn has become increasingly frustrated with the Democratic leadership of the Senate, which has routinely blocked him and every other senator from offering amendments to bills. He said in November that he would leave his seat early if he thought he and his staff could not make a difference “that will change what's coming for this country.”

Coburn's decision could set off a major scramble among Republicans hoping to replace him. U.S. Reps. Tom Cole, R-Moore; James Lankford, R-Oklahoma City; and Jim Bridenstine, R-Tulsa; will likely consider the race, along with Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt.

[/break1]com/sen.-tom-coburn-to-resign-early/article/3924682]http://newsok.com/sen.-tom-coburn-to-re ... le/3924682Republican Senators were offered an opportunity to prevent the majority from "filling in the tree" but rejected that offer last January. Screw 'em.

Coburn was one of several Republicans who sharply criticized efforts by the Republican conservative Tea Party movement to shut down the government last fall as a way to demand that the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, be de-funded.

Edit: Relocated this post to the correct subforum. Need coffee.
Edit: Turns out my pre-coffee post was in the correct subforum albeit for the wrong reason (originally thought Gov Fallin could appoint a successor).

A special election will occur to fill Sen Coburn's vacancy (Gov is not allowed to appoint anyone per Oklahoma statutes). I'm not certain yet when that election will occur.
Edit: If any of the Fogbow IAALs want to take a stab at determining when the special election wiil occur (assuming Sen Coburn's resignation is effective Jan 3, 2015 at the conclusion of the 113th Congress) knock yourself out.[/break1]onenet.net/okcon/]Oklahoma Constitution[/break1]oklegislature.gov/osstatuestitle.html]Oklahoma StatutesStatutes appear to be the work of a bunch of drunks masquerading as lawyers.(Only state I've ever been to that has a chain link fence running through the middle of every liquor store I walked into.)

Wish I could claim it was difficult and time consuming to locate the following information. The special election to replace Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., will take place concurrent with the regularly scheduled 2014 primary and general elections, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin announced Friday. The primary will be held June 24, a runoff would be Aug. 26, and the general will be Nov. 4. The timeline ensures that the Sooner State will not have to spend extra funds to choose the two-term senator’s replacement.[/break1]rollcall.com/oklahoma-gov-sets-dates-for-election-to-replace-coburn/]http://atr.rollcall.com/oklahoma-gov-se ... ce-coburn/
