Trump's company reaches deal to cut ties with Trump SoHo hotel

The Trump Organization is ending its association with the Trump SoHo hotel, once one of the prize properties of Donald Trump’s real estate empire.

The company, now run by Trump’s two grown sons, Donald Jr and Eric, will end its management and licensing agreement with the Trump SoHo by the end of the year.

The news, first reported by the New York Times, marks the end of the Trump family’s relationship with a property that has attracted scrutiny. The hotel and condominium project was the subject of a fraud investigation by the Manhattan district attorney and was built in a partnership with two controversial businessmen from the former Soviet Union.

In a statement, the Trump Organization announced “the buyout of the remaining term of the management and license agreement of the Trump SoHo Hotel, located at 246 Spring Street in Manhattan” and said the “transition is anticipated to take place by year-end”. ...

The Trump SoHo, located in lower Manhattan near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, faced a number of challenges. A mix of hotel rooms and condominiums, it struggled to attract business even before Trump became a political figure.

and another one bites the dust
Donald Trump’s luxury helicopter charter plans fail to take off

MARTYN MCLAUGHLIN

It was billed by Donald Trump as an “incredible” way to tour his golf resorts in the UK and Ireland, with well-heeled guests being whizzed back and forth across the Irish Sea and all around Scotland while revelling in the kind of opulence to which the US president has long been accustomed.

But Mr Trump’s bold vision of bolstering business at three of his loss making courses by exporting one of his luxury helicopters across the Atlantic to woo wealthy golfers has failed to take off.

The Scotsman can reveal that a little known subsidiary of the Trump Organisation tasked with overseeing a high-end helicopter charter service has quietly shipped back a multimillion pound Sikorsky helicopter to the US amid falling demand and “anger” at the Trump brand.

According to multiple clients who booked the Sikorsky S-76B, the charges were “eye watering” even in the high-end world of luxury helicopter charters, with fees reaching as much as £15,000 for a “couple of hours.”

Despite that, the Trump family firm, DT Connect Europe Limited, which is overseen by Mr Trump’s adult sons, Eric and Donald Jr, shows profit and loss reserves of nearly minus £1m.

The director of a charter company which operated the helicopter on the Trump Organisation’s behalf told The Scotsman that custom suffered after Mr Trump became president.

Richard Stubbs, a pilot and co-owner of Cardinal Helicopter Services, which had a contract with Mr Trump’s firm to fly the Sikorsky, said a decision was subsequently taken to offer wealthy clients - including US and Russian nationals - the option of flying without the ‘TRUMP’ insignia that had been prominently emblazoned on the aircraft’s tail boom.

“In America, Trump is a brand,” he explained. “Obviously over here, it’s the focus of people’s anger, sometimes, so we operated with or without the name.”

Trump to me has been especially inept at operating anything that flies for a profit because he just doesn't have any sense of what people want to ride in airplanes for.

The Shuttle was a city bus with wings. It's utility was it was a cheap, easy and convenient way to go from Boston to NYC to DC and back, without having to plan ahead, pay out the nose or give it much thought. It was slightly more hassle than jumping in a cab. That said, you didn't fly on the shuttle for luxury, you didn't want to pay 80% more to sit in the front and get free drinks on a 45 minute flight and get better service. "Something came up, I need you in New York this afternoon, jump on the shuttle and someone will meet you at LGA" If you wanted great service, you got a regular flight and booked first class. If you wanted to be a big shot, and have gold toilet seats and rich leather upholstery, you booked a private jet. Trump thought he could run the shuttle like a private jet service, and that it was better to run a service where he could charge $900 for a seat if he had better decor than the $45 a seat the shuttle was charging when he bought it (he thought the way to make it profitable was to make it a luxury service, oops).

Seriously, its like he bought the NYC Subway and decided to put fancy cars in, put marble lobbies in the subway stations, charge $600 to go from Queens to Coney Island and we'll all be rich! (well, almost, you'd also have to adjust that to account for there being another subway running the same routes and sticking with the same shitty lobbies and cheap fares)

I'm pretty sure his Helicopter service was something kind of like that. The people who want luxury helicopter service are either rich enough to have their own luxury helicopter or they expect it for free as part of the room rate when they travel. CEOs of public companies can't pay that kind of money, not because they can't afford the cash, but because they can't afford the publicity. Even if they use their own money, it looks bad.,Shareholders might not mind owning a jet, but they'll go nuts when you pay to rent one, to play golf anyhow.

Its all a symptom of him never having to run a real company that needed to make real profit. He thought everyone could just hop on the private jet, why not? Its what he did. Minions, especially the minions who fly the shuttle, are the $45 ticket guys. And again, the people who want gold toilet seats between New York and DC and Boston have their own plane with their own gold toilet seats.

I think his catering to the rich and super rich is a way to fill his narcissism and feelings of inferiority. If he is selling to the rich, in his mind, it makes him look even richer. It may be also behind his attempts to cut out working class immigrants (such as trying to withhold green cards from those who may have received government benefits, even legally). This makes him useful to Miller.

The GOP benefactors may well believe that Trump is an idiot but he is their useful idiot. The probably see his base as cover and a tool to keep the rest of the GOP scared to speak out.

Do they realize he could potentially do a great deal more damage? Possibly, but some probably think they can grab a good deal of cash and then kick him to the curb before things get too bad, just like the earlier real estate speculators. Others probably don't care as long as the can make more cash.
