Celebrate Black History Month With Learning, History and Joy

The contributions, achievements and sacrifices of Black Americans throughout U.S. history are something to celebrate.

Our current monthlong celebration of that rich legacy has its roots in Negro History Week, which historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland, founders of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, or ASALH), initiated in February of 1926. They chose the second week in February as a nod to the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Over time the celebration evolved, with President Gerald Ford officially recognizing February as Black History Month in 1976.

Each year a theme is chosen for the month by the ASALH. This year, the theme is “Black Health and Wellness.”
This was BIG when I was teaching elementary students. Roots aired at about the same time so 1976 was into 1619 before 1619 became a thing to avoid.

So our newest member is "formerlyaddie" which means she's Addie, so I instantly approved her membership and took her out of the Noobs usergroup and thought to myself, "Aha, self! Addie is back, this is SO COOL." 8-)

And she hasn't logged in yet. I don't know what her internet problems are. I have been trying for more than a year to get her back. I get emails and I respond right away and then I never get another email from that address. Then three months later I'll get another email and I'll respond right away. I've sent a dozen emails, but she hasn't rejoined us. :(

She's registered as Addie and formerlyaddie, which means she can access the site, but she never logs in and posts.

I'm stumped. I've done everything, but Addie still hasn't rejoined us. :daydreaming:
Edit: She lives in ... a foreign country, so she has always had connectivity issues, but this is a year later ...

I miss Addie and her wonderful posts. She was always so wonderful about keeping us aware of the latest news. For someone like me, who pops in for a few minutes several times a day during short breaks in my work and private life her posts were so welcome and informative.

 I want "my" Addie back...
There's a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality.

DETROIT (AP) — Anyone who has ever been temporarily blinded by high-beam headlights from an oncoming car will be happy to hear this.

U.S. highway safety regulators are about to allow new high-tech headlights that can automatically tailor beams so they focus on dark areas of the road and don’t create glare for oncoming drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it issued a final rule allowing what’s called “adaptive driving beam headlights” on new vehicles. It will go into effect when published in the Federal Register in the next few days.

The headlights, commonly used in Europe, have LED lamps that can focus beams on darkness such as the driver’s lane and areas along the roadside. They also lower the intensity of the light beams if there’s oncoming traffic. Camera sensors and computers help determine where the light should go.

“This final rule will improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists by making them more visible at night, and will help prevent crashes by better illuminating animals and objects in and along the road,” the agency said in a news release on Tuesday.

Too bad they aren't out there yet. I can barely see at night from the oncoming lights. I cannot drive after dark. I'm sure I'm not alone.

To tomorrow's jury lounging?

He'll come off the short bus and we shall see
By the way he must now pee.

what the hell does he do
He has no clue
When Monday rolls around???

He may be excused forevermore
And will go out and find a whore.
