Tiger Woods was hospitalized following a bad single-car accident in L.A. County on Tuesday morning -- with officials requiring the jaws of life to free him from the vehicle.

"On February 23, 2021, at approximately 7:12 AM, LASD responded to a single vehicle roll-over traffic collision on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes," officials say.

"The vehicle was traveling northbound on Hawthorne Boulevard, at Blackhorse Road, when it crashed. The vehicle sustained major damage."

"The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer, Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods," officials confirmed.

"Mr. Woods was extricated from the wreck with the 'jaws of life' by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for his injuries."

We are all speculating at this point. The lower part of the SUV appeared to be crushed further back than the windshield up. That would be consistent with leg injuries. Why would an otherwise healthy athlete in his 40's be suspected of a stroke?

I was in the office 4-5 years ago and a seemingly healthy fellow (about 45 years old) stroked out mid-sentence on the phone with a customer. One of my biggest regrets that I couldn't save him. But he was gone before he hit the floor.

But this was 7:10 am in the morning, so it seems unlikely that he was angry? According to the twitter feed someone posted above, he was on his way to a day-long event.

Tiger was a prodigy and they tend not to be raised to be "whole" people like normal kids. Lord knows how he was taught to drive (a car) but I am with neon, he should've had a driver (of the car). I wish him well. I hope he recovers and has some other interests in life.

He had just left the hotel minutes before. Hotel. One report says a staff member stated Tiger was "agitated" when he was leaving this morning getting in his vehicle.
Did he party a bit to late and was dealing with a hangover? I think most all of us know that the results of drinking into the early morning hours when we were 25 is different than when we were 45 the next morning. At 45, even with a safe blood alcohol level @7am -- puts one way off game from 100% the next morning.

According to a news story reporting Tiger's"agitated" state, it was momentary and caused by a delay getting out of the drive, but it may have led to him driving too fast:

“A crew member who saw Tiger as he got in his SUV at the hotel tells TMZ, once Tiger got in his vehicle, there was a delay in driving off and he appeared ‘agitated and impatient’. The crew member says once the delay was over, Tiger ‘took off fast’.”

Moments later, Woods was driving alone when he lost control of his vehicle on a dangerous stretch of road.

Police said he appeared to have been travelling at a “relatively greater speed than normal”.

Tiger Woods suffered comminuted open fractures in his right leg -- meaning the bone was shattered in at least 2 places and broke through the skin -- so doctors used a rod to stabilize it, according to Tiger's medical team. Dr. Anish Mahajan -- Chief Medical Officer at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center -- just issued a statement describing Tiger's injuries in detail ... and it sounds bad. Note, he only mentions injuries to ONE of Tiger's legs, not both. "Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by Orthopaedic trauma specialists," Mahajan says. "Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia."

A comminuted fracture is when the bone breaks into several pieces, according to WebMD. And, the fact it's "open" means the bones broke through the skin. Dr. Mahajan says Tiger also suffered serious injuries to his right ankle and foot -- which were stabilized "with a combination of screws and pins." He continued, "Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling." Tiger is currently "awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room," according to Tiger's PR team ... which also added a statement from his camp.

"Thank you to the wonderful doctors and hospital staff at Harbor UCLA Medical Center, the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department, and the Fire Department. Your support and assistance has been outstanding." Not really. The right leg and ankle are most often the one injured badly because of the additional stress of applying the brake and the fact that your body keeps it in one place during the crash. Your left leg isn't usually tensed up and is free to flop around. It's the same reason drunks can walk away from crashes that would kill other people. Their bodies go with the force rather than resisting it.

That being said, comminuted, open fractures of the leg are really nasty, but better the tibia than the femur.

My neighbor will be bummed. She was a LPGA pro back in the 70's, and that led to a career in the OGA (Oregon Golf Assoc). One of her jobs was to mentor young amateurs in their quest for the green jacket. Tiger Woods was one of her many apprentices. Remembers him well. Has many stories. Yes, he is among a handful of sports or pop culture figures who do that. LeBron is one, Tom Brady, and just a few others are in that group.

Edit: I am no doctor but he details on the surgery make me think he is at least done for the year and may never play professionally again. His window to win a major was probably fewer than 5 years before the accident and this will wipe out some part of that. It looks like Trump supporting turd Jack Nicklaus's record of 18 is safe for now.
