CNN is claiming he can leave the country while the verdict is decided. That is weird.
Seems reasonable to me. Any pretrial time would be credited against a sentence - and might cover all of it. And if he doesn't return for a sentence, he's essentially banned from going back to Europe. And will have problems doing so if not acquitted in any event.

It would be scandalous for him to run off after Trump vouched for him.

I suspected as much. Norway declined to join the EU (plebiscites failed in 1972 and 1994), perhaps because the Norwegians did not want to have to share any of their sweet sweet North Sea oil money. (Norway has the world's largest sovereign wealth fund.) However, Norway does abide by the EU principles of free movement of persons so as to remain in the EU common market area (the resolution that the UK has thus far rejected), and has been permitted non-voting participation in some aspects of EU governance, including the Schengen Agreement and certain military/security accords.

Around my corner of Europe that generally means that the presumed sentence will about match up with time already spent in the holding cell. Especially in my corner of Europe that means the court will speak just as many days of incarceration that the state does not need to pay any compensation for holding a person too long.

A US Department of State official told CNN, "We can't comment on diplomatic communications."
or in other words they have no control over the US Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Robert C. O'Brien - a protégé of the WH :blackeye:

PS.
CNN has obtained the full text of a letter written by the US Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Robert C. O'Brien and leaked earlier on Twitter. Addressed to the Swedish Prosecution Authority
Very obvious that this was directly the WH in action, the State Department knows better than to address diplomatic notes directly to some government official in a foreign state. Their direct communications partners are available in the equivalent government office to the State Department. Even then the usual way is to have the embassy staff address a low level issue. Diplomats around the world will take note of the clowns doing business at the WH.

Let this sink in:

"The U.S. Government requests
Embassy ofthe United States of America

Stockholm, Sweden
July 31, 2019

Prosecution Authority of the Kingdom of Sweden:

On behalf of the US. Government, I present my compliments to the
Prosecution Authority of the Kingdom of Sweden and with respect to the
upcoming legal proceedings in the case of detained American citizens Rakim
Mayer?s, David Rispers, and Bladimir Corniel, the US. Government requests the
following:

Immediate humanitarian release from the current Kronoberg Remand Prison
Supervised detention in a local Stockholm hotel pending ?nal disposition of the
case

I take this opportunity to remind the Prosecution Authority of the
commitment by President Trump to Prime Minister Stefan Lovfen that the three
Americans will remain in Sweden if granted a humanitarian release.

As Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, I stressed to the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice officials on July 29, 2019, the
government of the United States of America wants to resolve this case as soon as
possible to avoid potentially negative consequences to the U.S.~Swedish bilateral
relationship.

I avail myself of this opportunity to renew to the Prosecution Authority of the
Kingdom of Sweden the assurances of my highest consideration.

Very truly yours,

[l/i C. 13??

Ambassador Robert O?Brien
Special Presidential Envoy

The Prosecution Authority of Sweden,

Stockholm.

While one would ass-ume that the WH has more important things to do, the Oval Office has Godfather -like time to assist some petty criminal.

I would think that Trump is looking to have a black person other than Kanye West and the Diamond and Silk people added to his roster of 'black people who think I'm all that and a bag of chips'.

When is this guy going to show up at the White House to get his Presidential Medal of Freedom?

The reply from Sweden's Prosecutor-General is a neat FOAD letter. She points out that even her own powers to intervene are constitutionally limited.

As commented above, it's an absurd display of incompetence for Ambassador O'Brien to write directly to the Prosecutor-General rather than go through appropriate diplomatic channels, but I guess that's probably what the Trumpistas told him to do: "we're top dogs, we don't need to deal with little people or pen-pushers, we'll go straight to the action." I wonder if they told him to wear a clown suit when writing his stupid letter?

Of course, the aim of the exercise is to make Trump and the Trumpistas look good to their supporters and potential supporters. It's impossible to believe that anybody in or near the White House actually cares about Mr. Rocky.

Off-topic: I always find the Scandinavian habit of writing "You" with a capital "Y" in very formal letters (in English) disproportionately off-putting to my reading rhythm. They do it because it's the convention in Danish/Norwegian/Swedish, even though they have lost the informal/formal tu/vous du/sie etc. distinction in ordinary speech and writing.
