Amazing exchange in ASAP Rocky case.
Rocky's lawyer asked plaintiff why he thinks the fight started: "Was it because they were afraid of you?" "I'm half the size of them," he replies. Via @perkudo

As Horace Rumpole often wrote, sometimes the criminal defense lawyer, not having access to pre trial discovery (like depositions) is forced to ask such questions. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But the "why" rule is invariant. Allowing the opponent to explain -- especially when you have no idea what the answer is going to be -- is just awful lawyering.

Just a wild guess:

The Swedish / Afghan boy didn't show enough r e s p e c t to a celebrity.
It must be tough being a celebrity when nobody has ever heard of you.

I pity the poor diplomats
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for the rapper to be freed, drawing complaints of interference from Swedish politicians.

The US Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Robert C. O'Brien, has been sent to attend the trial.

Swedish media also reported Thursday that the US embassy had sent a request to the Swedish Prosecutor General, to allow the rapper and the two others to stay in a hotel rather than the remand prison where they are currently being held.

"We responded that's not how it works in Sweden," Karin Rosander, communications director at the Swedish Prosecution Authority, told the newspaper Expressen.

:yeah:
If Trump had not shown (again) his idiocy I wouldn't have followed this case. For rap I'm much too old.

Now I'm interested in the way police and justice work in a really developed country. I have no clue about the way real police (like a homicide squad) work in the US. I doubt that they have the means and the time to produce a 552 pages report in a case like this.
Hard to compare, given the substantial differences in approach between how criminal cases are assembled in the civil- and common-law systems.

I read the above link and this one at Marketwatch which says he was released until August 14, but neither one actually says he's returning to the US. Is there something else that confirms it?

This all seems very practical to me.

The rapper comes home.

If Sweden finds him not guilty, that's the end of it.

If Sweden finds him guilty, he ordered to report to jail. Naturally he won't return for that, so he's forever banned from Sweden and Sweden saves itself the cost of incarcerating him.
