Great assessment of McCarthy's allegations.
Assessing the allegations that triggered McCarthy’s impeachment inquiry

On Tuesday morning, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced that he was authorizing an impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

In making the announcement, he delineated six predicates for taking the historic step. Each deserves additional context that McCarthy didn’t provide — context that often significantly undercuts the idea that such an inquiry is warranted.

"Binding" is doing some serious lifting there, as DOJ opinions "bind" only ... the DOJ.

If the House seeks to compel something from the executive branch, the executive branch likely will respond with this memo. And then it is off to the courts (or not) for enforcement.

i know I'm preaching to the choir here, but this inquiry is bull$hyt.

There are repbulicans in congress who are guilty of the very things they are accusing President Biden and worse.

Meanwhile, this move does nothing to lower interest rates, address healthcare and lower the price of gas. My congressman for NC-03 could be convicted on Medicare fraud using their own tactics!

Well, the fact that McCarthy did this by decree shows that he does almost certainly does not have the votes to put this to a vote in the house. Therefore... this will be pushed out to the Election without coming back to the house for an actual impeachment vote that will be overwhelmingly defeated.

But there will be lots of Daniel Issa (remember him?) style interviews on FOX News about how this is definitely bringing down the Bidens.

Also, this was covered 20 minutes into the half hour Irish News Bulletin. And even the reporter said flat out that McCarthy was doing this becasue he does not have the votes to pass setting up an inquiry.

Their ethical system is keyed to who, not what. Much of their moral outrage is rooted in activities common in their communities and they are upset that less worthy people are doing it too.

Put another way, violating social taboos is an indicator of position within society, so claiming that outgroup people are committing them is a way of saying they are acting above their station, and can be seen as an existential threat to their self image since it implies their position is not superior.

Satire from The Borowitz Report
Republicans Demand Biden Tell Them Why They Are Impeaching Him

By Andy Borowitz
September 14, 2023

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In an irate letter to the White House, Kevin McCarthy and other congressional Republicans have demanded that President Biden reveal why they are impeaching him.

The letter claims that, after Republicans announced their impeachment inquiry, “the White House has stubbornly refused to provide us with any reasons for our doing so.”

The Republicans go on to demand that Biden reveal the rationale for his ouster “immediately, or face the consequences.”

“The American people are waiting, Mr. President, for you to explain to us why we are impeaching you,” the letter concludes. “Your silence will not be forgiven.”

Trump privately discussed Biden impeachment with House GOPers

The former president talked with House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik on Tuesday.

By Meridith McGraw and Alex Isenstadt

Donald Trump has been weighing in behind the scenes in support of the House GOP push to impeach President Joe Biden, including talking with a member of leadership in the lead up to Tuesday’s announcement authorizing a formal impeachment inquiry.

The former president has been speaking weekly with House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, who was the first member of Republican leadership to come out in support of impeachment. The two spoke Tuesday, after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced Republicans would be pursuing the inquiry, according to two people familiar with the conversation.

Stefanik has been a longtime Trump ally. She endorsed his comeback presidential bid before he made his official announcement and has been mentioned as a potential Trump VP pick should he win the GOP nomination.

On Sunday night, Trump had dinner at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), an ally of Trump and McCarthy. At the gathering, the topic of impeachment was discussed, according to a person familiar with the conversation who spoke on condition of anonymity.

I love the way they say "discussed". That guy never discusses anything. It probably was an endless screaming whine of "MAKE HIM BE IMPEACHED TOOOOOOOO!!!"

There is nothing that surprises me here. Not that he discussed it with them, and not that it leaked out. Par for the course. A gimme.

When Lunden Roberts needed an expert to help prove that Hunter Biden had the money to keep making substantial child support payments for their 4-year-old daughter, her legal team turned to Garrett Ziegler.

Ziegler doesn’t have a degree in personal finance. He doesn’t personally know the president’s son. But Ziegler, whose first job out of college was working as a low-level aide in the Trump White House, has fashioned himself into a Hunter Biden specialist, compiling personal and financial records from anywhere he can get them. Then, his nonprofit posts them online.

Ziegler claims this cache offers the fullest accounting of Hunter Biden’s life, from his battles with drug addiction to his sexual escapades to his business dealings. “In the Western world, I’m confident that nobody has dug into the American first family more than us,” he said recently on YouTube. “I’ve just become obsessed with studying the family.”

Ziegler, 27, enjoys a following of tens of thousands on social media and the attention of conservative media. He has made himself a chief antagonist of the younger Biden, prompting lawsuits, an Internal Revenue Service complaint and other legal pushback from Hunter Biden’s circle.

Ziegler is at the vanguard of a sprawling network of Biden antagonists, from right-wing media organizations to congressional leaders to MAGA activists, that is focused intensely on the president’s son. They see Hunter Biden’s activities as his father’s biggest political vulnerability, a conclusion reflected in the House GOP’s recent decision to launch an impeachment inquiry.

They had a similar task team back in 2016 Vis-a-Vis Hillary Clinton. Hell I have an old Doonsbury Strip where the Reporter went into the Negative Reserch room that G H W Bush had set up to investigate Bill.
