Just interviewed a 16-year-old with her father’s blessing. She told me the school went into lockdown roughly 5 minutes after the school day started. She said the students found out what was going on through Instagram.

WSOC - NC
Police: Student dies after being shot by classmate at Butler High School ...

Officials said another student in custody.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox said one student was upset with another, which led to the shooting in a main hallway just after 7 a.m.

"We’re incredibly saddened that we had a loss of life on one of our campuses today. What makes it doubly difficult is that it was one of our students who was the shooter," Wilcox said. "First of all, our hearts go out to the larger community and to all of the young people who witnessed this tragedy today."

CMS officials said the single shooter was apprehended in a classroom, and the weapon is in the possession of law enforcement.

"one student was upset with another, which led to the shooting"

So one life is lost and others ruined because an "upset" student had access to a gun. :madguy:

If there wasn't a gun involved this might have at worst been a fist fight.

CMS superintendent: 'We don't actively search every bag' that comes into school

https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/crime ... -609116338
"We don't actively search every bag that comes into school each and every day," Wilcox said. "I can tell you, from one perspective, yes we failed. Maybe we didn't intervene early enough in a bullying situation, I don't really know what took place.

"I don't know how a young person gets a handgun in the state of North Carolina but we'll look into all those things and make sure it doesn't happen again."

About two hours after the shooting, hundreds of parents stormed the front doors of Butler High, demanding to have their kids released from school. Several parents marched in a large group from Elevation Church in Matthews, saying they received a notification that they could sign their kids out of class at 8:50 a.m. With the school on lockdown, those parents were told they couldn't sign their kids out until that was lifted, which was around 9:30. Chaos and confusion took over as parents flooded the entryways and students poured out of the exits to get to their parents.

"We had a breakdown, our police officers were not able to keep the parents back but at the same time, I understand why parents came on the campus," Wilcox said.
 One would hope that a school superintendent in this day and age would know only too well how easy it is for many kids to get handguns.

I can recall years ago reading some stuff from the 1700s and this was pretty much exactly why schools banned guns, knives, and swords in schools.

New York Mag: On the Cover: Victims of School Shootings From 1946–2018, in Their Own Words

On the cover of New York Magazine’s October 29–November 11, 2018, issue is a portfolio by photographer Michael Avedon, who traveled the country (from Parkland to Columbine) taking photos of half a century of school-shooting victims. With interviews conducted by Jared Soule and Amelia Schonbek, the piece is 25 survivors in their own words.

Of working on the portfolio, Avedon says the project was the most harrowing, humbling experience of his life. “What these people have suffered is unimaginable, but their bravery, dignity, and optimism have given me faith in humanity,” he says. “School shootings are an epidemic in this country, and until the United States changes its gun laws, they will continue. This is not just a problem for our country; it is a crisis for humanity.”

Conservative adults seem willfully blind to how the world really works these days. The principal doesn’t know how a kid in NORTH CAROLINA got a gun? The most Republican-dirty-tricks-at-the-highest-level state in the union? Quick, let’s change the laws so the newlyy, duly elected Democratic Governor is hogtied, can’t change our already-declared-unconstitutional laws.

Take your head out of the sand, sir. Look around you at the world your views have created.

Gun rights - why on earth would you not know how easy it is for anyone to get a gun? Easier in most states than buying pot.

Hate-filled shooters - who have spent the last 28 years listen to the likes of Limbaugh screaming eliminationist invective at Democrats for not thinking like they do, 28 years of lying about what we actually do believe, lying about our non-profits because theirs are mostly just shells for wealth transfer so ours must be, too.

Minorities? Immigrants? You name the issue, you’ve turned it into a hatefest against us.

I’m so sick and tired of how I feel every day, how outraged these people make me. I’ve recently realized that more than half of what Trump and his side do is solely to “own the libs”, so now I feel even worse for letting them get to me like this. I want this to end. I’m surprised there haven’t been any (publicized) attempts on the Rat in Chief’s life. Beuller?

The death of a student is a tragedy. Why were other lives “ruined?” Were there gun injuries that resulted in lifelong disabilities? Is it the psychological trauma intended here?

I can declare from personal experience that the psychological trauma can be overcome. I can say nothing about lifelong disabilities.

Yeah.. brain stuff is weird and a lot harder to see, but can be just as permanent or heal completely based off difficult to predict factors.

I would think the loss of a child is far more traumatic than the death of an exchange student unknown to me. I do not see that as cruel or callous. I can admire his hamanity and his courage, but that is lesser than the grief I would feel at the loss of a child.

Lamar HS student shot to death in drive-by

https://www.chron.com/houston/article/L ... gn=twitter
The student was shot near Bethany Christian School on 3223 Westheimer Rd. in the Upper Kirby neighborhood, according to officials.

Recommended Video

Houston Police Department Lt. Nate Rosenblatt said a person in a black Subaru drove by the student, shot him, and drove off. People tried giving the student CPR on the scene, but he wasn't responsive, Rosenblatt said.

Bethany Christian School and Lamar High School are separated by Eastside Street.
