new speculation
AMELIA EARHART MYSTERY: NEWLY FOUND PHOTO COULD PROVE THE PILOT LIVED—AND WAS CAPTURED BY THE JAPANESE
BY JULIA GLUM ON 7/5/17 AT 10:44 AM

Glass ceiling–shattering pilot Amelia Earhart vanished in 1937 while trying to fly around the world. But now, almost exactly 80 years later, there may be a new development in her disappearance.

Experts said they believe a recently uncovered photo from the National Archives shows Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan the same year the aviators went missing, the Today Show reported exclusively on Wednesday. The woman thought to be Earhart isn't facing the camera, but her characteristics match up. The picture is labeled "Jaluit Atoll," which is the name of an area in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, and displays the Japanese ship Koshu as it moves a 38-foot-long item.

Earhart's plane was 38 feet, 7 inches long.

"We have no evidence anywhere that she crashed into the ocean, even though that's been the common narrative for so many years," Shawn Henry, former executive assistant director of the FBI, told Today. "I think we have a lot of evidence that she lived and survived in the Marshall Islands."

Henry worked on the upcoming History Channel special Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence, which discovered the photo in question. So, too, did executive producer Gary Tarpinian, who laid out his Earhart theory in the Today interview: The Japanese took Earhart to Saipan in the Mariana Islands and imprisoned the pilot until her death.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat. That rumor has been around for decades. I prefer to believe the incompetent navigator/lost homing beacon theory myself.

Apparently The History Channel is running a 'documentary' on the theory, which pretty much relegates it to 'probably not'.

The History Channel doesn't run real documented history like it use to. Such is television now. Food for the conspiracy theorists.

I'm not sure anyone will ever truly know what happened to her. It would probably be necessary to have DNA these days for total proof, and I'm not sure how likely that is when there isn't definitively a body, and I don't know what family exists to test against.

DNA would have most likely have degraded by this point anyway.

I think its time to let the poor woman rest. She crashed somewhere, and even if she survived the crash she died later. Pre-war blaming the evil Japanese for it is silly, the Japanese would have handed her over, and basked in the thanks of the world, if they had her.

May she rest in peace.

She was kidnapped by ancient aliens with elongated skulls, while they were vacationing with Bigfoot.

I heard that a team with a cadaver dog is headed to Nikumaroro island.

Good luck to them.

The photograph in question is absolute proof that Amelia Earhart had the Tardis at some point. Oops.

Japanese Blogger Points Out Timeline Flaw In Supposed Earhart Photo
A Japanese military history buff has found library records showing a photo supposedly depicting Amelia Earhart survived a crash landing in 1937 was actually published two years before the famous aviator vanished. :snippity:

In an English-language post, the blogger explains that "the photograph was first published in Palau under Japanese rule in 1935, in a photo book ... So the photograph was taken at least two years before Amelia Earhart disappear[ed] in 1937 and a person on the photo was not her."

The photo book in question was digitized and published online by Japan's National Diet Library. The publication date is listed in the traditional Japanese style as "Showa 10" — that is, 1935.

Assuming the Japanese haven't fabricated the evidence to derail the story, that is.

Question raised about timeline of Amelia Earhart documentary
The History channel is looking into the matter but stands behind its documentary.
This is approaching the level of Animal Planet's "mermaids are real" hoaxumentary.

History Channel has crossed that line more and more in the past 10 years. Entertainment and commercialism are valued higher than presenting the facts. The feature on dragons was cute, but it was so far-fetched that a reasonable mind could see it was fantasy. With Amelia they are speculating. Nothing more.

Nothing wrong with commercialism, facts can be pretty profitable too. The problem is executive recruiting : one's next job is in part dependent on the prestige of what one worked on previously, and mass market entertaining tripe, even if it sells poorly due to market saturation, makes an executive more attractive to other companies than 'boring' niche stuff even if it comes with a steady profit.

Who you sell to is more important than how much you sell.

I tried to watch this before they found that the picture its all based upon was from 1935 or earlier and among the many things about it that bothered me is the shameless jumping to conclusions. They started out with a picture that showed 2 people that might have been westerners, the only undisputed thing about it was it was taken at a known place. Before the show was an hour in, they were coming back from breaks with " now that the photo proves...." and such.

All I got from it was they had a picture of two people that were close enough to looking like the people they were looking for as not to rule them out. They didn't know when it was taken (which came back to haunt them real quick) and they were putting a lot of the heavy lifting on "proof" that the photo had not been altered. But, well, no one said it was altered, but a genuine photo of something doesn't mean the something is what they think it is....

Just one more reason the History Channel should be rebranded as the "trailer park documentary channel".

Had they employed the same experts as Zullo, Gallups, et al.? That is, experts at blowing up a dubious apparent similarity into a full blown conspiracy theory?

ZekeB You are right about the History Channel and the shame is that there are so many bonefide historical events that they could present. The dumbing down of America continues so the unfathonable can become the electable.
