Garbage, garbage, garbage -- mom's computer is practically locked up with viruses. The first is PC Fix Speed. once I get that resolved, what should I do?

What operating system?I have always found this process extremely reliable: [/break1]comcast.net/~SupportCD/MalwareRemoval.html]http://home.comcast.net/~SupportCD/Malw ... .htmlTheir general rule is deal with all malware first, before doing any other optimization such as removing unneeded programs, defragging the disk, etc.Different free programs are very good, but none of them get everything. Sometimes you have to run them multiple times to get everything. It can be time-consuming, especially with a bogged-down machine and multiple restarts.Others here (Suranis?) have more expertise than me.

If your Mom's computer is windows XP or newer, for free virus cleaning I recommend [link]Microsoft Security Essentials,http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/wind ... s-download[/link]. I also recommend [link]Malwarebytes which has a free version,http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/[/link] that is pretty good at cleaning up bad stuff. In my experience, a paid antivirus solution is usually worth the yearly investment (particularly if you buy it on Boxing Day), especially for a person who sees a Google Ad for "Your computer is infested, scan now" and thinks it is legit.

I second teh recommendation for Malwarebytes. It's good to run it with the computer rebooted in "safe mode" (minimizes any interference from the viruses themselves with the antivirus process).I also second the recommendation for a paid solution -- but it'll be harder to get consensus on this. I hate Macafee and Symantec, but Macafee's enterprise solution is what my employer uses worldwide (a Fortune 100 company). Go figure. At home I use Trend Micro and have been very satisfied.
Edit: Oh, and my personal bias is to not install and configure the paid system until you've done everything else to make sure you are starting from a clean base. In extreme cases: reformat.

In extreme cases: reformat.I agree with the above. Unfortunately you have to be prepared to reformat/reinstall in the event of an infection. One thing I like about Symantec (and other companies do have equivalents) is that if you have a license for Norton Antivirus/InternetSecurity/360/etc, you can use the [link]Norton Bootable Recovery Tool,http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/nbrt.aspx[/link]. You have to have a clean machine to make it on, but you can create a bootable CD or usb drive. As a last resort before reformatting, it can be a lifesaver.

If it's really a mess, I'd start with a full antivirus scan started from an unwritable boot CD or other write-protcted medium (such as a USB stick with a physical write protection switch). Here are [/break1]geekomad.com/2013/03/3-best-free-bootable-antivirus-rescue.html]three examples. You really don't know what's on there at this point, and some really nasty viruses become resident in the boot sector of the hard drive or (even worse) the BIOS, so if your antivirus software is compromised by a virus before it even starts, you're never going to get anything done. After this phase (which should probably be repeated), move on to other things like installing a resident antivirus package, one or more anti-adware/anti-spyware packages (I still like Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D), and if you're an expert, something like HijackThis to detect rootkits and other more malevolent malware. It's also advisable to do a full scan with more than one virus package, since they're not perfect. Just don't have two running at the same time, because they will generally detect each other or otherwise interfere with each other.(Personally, I start with something like a boot CD with the command line version of F-PROT, but that's a bit old school.)

So I discovered that as one of the only people who pays for AOL, mom gets free McAfee. So I downloaded and ran McAfee. Nope, need to uninstall MalwareBytes and Windows Security. Ok, done. McCafee says no problems, yet I can see the #%£€& icon in the tray. Ran a full scan, only got to 8% done after 3 hours. :torches: That's it, no more fiddling. I'm starting over with an Acer Chromebook. Mom's computer cost $200 5 years ago. A new one costs about that.

AT&T offers free McAfee with their internet service. I've used it for 8 years and have never had a virus successfully infect my computer using it.BTW: AT&T is the only service in my area. Per, Wikipedia; John McAfee no longer has a stake in the company.

Go to the control panel and remove ALL programs that you are unfamiliar with. That icon may be there because of a program that your AV thinks is legitimate.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence -- especially with malware -- and no package will detect them all.

I did a couple boot scans with my paid version of avast internet security a few days ago. It found 60-some pups and other virus, trojans and worms that hadn't showed up with the regular scans.
