[link]Black Marble,http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-20621177[/link]http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/6 ... e.jpgVIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) can discern a range of phenomena of interest to weather forecasters - cloud, snow, fog, etc - even when the satellite is on the dark side of the Earth. Most of the time, all VIIRS needs to do its work is some illumination from the Moon. But if that is not available, the instrument can still detect features down below just from the nocturnal glow of the atmosphere itself. And, of course, just as this Black Marble rendition demonstrates, VIIRS is also very good at capturing the lights of our cities.

Where the heck was I .... oh yeah, the zoo. The zoo in Boise, Idaho. (no, you are) They had a bird there that was supposedly the largest bird in the world. I wish I could have seen it in flight. OTOH, I don't think it would have survived the local environment.

Man Walks All Day to Create Spectacular Snow Patternshttp://api.ning.com/files/ZxRIYXQ*G5SimcpDwlbVqGGnW-zmaRiJ8op36Wqpgeg9kBPc49L23JTpjYKWqNhi6NJ4npi00CXbrD9XexRWVfrNTeg*sN-J/SimonBeck01.jpgArtist Simon Beck must really love the cold weather! Along the frozen lakes of Savoie, France, he spends days plodding through the snow in raquettes (snowshoes), creating these sensational patterns of snow art. Working for 5-9 hours a day, each final piece is typically the size of three soccer fields! The geometric forms range in mathematical patterns and shapes that create stunning, sometimes 3D, designs when viewed from higher levels. How long these magnificent geometric forms survive is completely dependent on the weather. Beck designs and redesigns the patterns as new snow falls, sometimes unable to finish a piece due to significant overnight accumulations. Interestingly enough, he said, 'The main reason for making them was because I can no longer run properly due to problems with my feet, so plodding about on level snow is the least painful way of getting exercise. Gradually, the reason has become photographing them, and I am considering buying a better camera.” Spectacular art for the sake of exercise!more photos at [/break1]mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/simon-beck-snow-art]http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blo ... k-snow-art

Thought it came out rather nice, considering it was a cheap point-and-click camera:centerhttp://i.imgur.com/2CGrK.jpg[/img]Chapel of Frederick V at Roskilde Cathedral. The whole church is a mix of styles, since they had to build a new chapel every few centuries, and they always went with the latest fashion.

Came across an odd looking cathedral... Any ideas of where the heck this is? Has the look of "Buddy Christ".

Nothing says Supreme Diety better than having Saints in Go-Go dancer cages on the side of your temple.

The only people who build like that today are Mormons.http://www.mormontemples.com/files/2010 ... r.jpgRetro moderne but they have a creepy feel to me as if they don't quite fit. They remind me of the architect who created all the "vault-like" Home Savings structures in California a while ago. They, too, didn't quite fit in.

Those are beautiful! I love to look at NASA images from the Hubble telescope. I was surprised to learn that many space shots are filmed in black and white, with the color added based on light wavelengths. Or something like that, according to,my son.I like this guy's work:[/break1]flickr.com/photos/8763834@N02/]http://www.flickr.com/photos/8763834@N02/He has regular photos of people and nature, but he also takes artistic photos of exploding objects.
