An option to consider: a railroad trip coast to coast.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking either Montreal or Banff would be fun. Does anyone have any thoughts on Toronto?

Not sure about the train; it sounds fun for me but I think my kids would get bored. (They get bored on any train ride longer than 30 minutes unless it's a bullet train.)

Now to find cheap airfare . . .

Toronto is wonderful. It is one of the most diverse cities anywhere (maybe more than NYC). I love the place.

Heading to New Orleans tomorrow, spending two nights there, then getting on a ship for the Cayamo Cruise.

Cayamo is a floating music festival. Artists include:

That cruise sounds fabulous. We get to spend the long weekend with our granddaughters while their folks go to a wedding. While the parents are away.....

:o I, who spend a lot of time listening to music, do not recognize any of those names. :?

Guess I should spend more time listening to recent American performers and less time listening to the Second Vienna School and Alan Hovhaness? :?:

I had the same reaction. My music tastes are diverse, yet I recognized maybe one name. :bag:

I recognize about half. Some, like John Prine, Shawn Mullins, and Richard Thompson, are among my favorites. In addition to the concerts by the professionals, there will be lots of impromptu jams among the passengers. I know about 20 people who will be on the cruise, most of whom I’ve played with before.

I am so excited!

John Prine was a favorite of mine at bluegrass festivals in VA. My all-time favorite, though, was John Hartford. The best part of those, too, was always the tail gate picking.

You gonna have soooo much Fun!

Waiting on word from Warren Wilson...you heard yet?

Krewe of Chewbacchus rolls in the Marigny Saturday evening at 7:00. It's a sci-fi/fantasy themed parade.

Yes, I was able to do my pre-registration online. But they’ve been having all kinds of problems with that this year apparently.

Yeah, it didn’t work, then it worked, then it didn’t work again. FYI: Here’s the text if the email they sent — it might have helpfil info:
Your pre-registration and payment of $100 has been processed, including your request for a private room. Our Housing Coordinator will be making housing assignments in June 2018.

We are very much looking forward to having you join us this summer! For all pre-registrants, the 2018 catalog will be mailed and emailed to you shortly after the pre-registration deadline on Friday, February 9, 2018. Since we want to ensure that everyone receives the early registration information at the same time, we will send an electronic version of the catalog in addition to the hard copy. You will have access to early registration a couple of weeks before we mail the catalog to everyone else on the mailing list. Early Registration will begin on Friday, February 23 at 5:00 pm EST.

Due to the popularity of the programs, WE ARE REQUIRING ALL PRE-REGISTRANTS TO REGISTER ONLINE THIS YEAR. Included with the email will be instructions for online registration using an assigned user name and password.

In the meantime, if you're on Facebook and would like to keep updated with the online Gathering community, please join our page at:

Rippingly jealous! John Prine has a new album out. I've previewed a few of the songs and am not disappointed. This will be a wonderful time and I hope to see some reports here. You lucky Naut!

I’m back. It was a great time, but I got really sick the day after I got home, so I didn’t post much about it.

It was *so* much fun! There were seven differeny music venues on the ship, lots of collaboration between the artists. It was a blast!

I'll be mostly offline for the next week or so. Changes in job status for both of us and to the health status of our parents pushed us to decide to move back to the Midwest. We'll miss Seattle but not the traffic, which seems to be getting worse by the day. They come to finish the packing job at the house here today and load tomorrow. I'll probably be on the road early Thursday morning for the 2,200 mile drive to Indy. Ugh.

My wife is already there, helping to take care of her mom and running the house search. We put an offer in on a house yesterday so fingers crossed that we'll soon have a place to live. The good news is that because of the insane Seattle housing market we'll be completely debt free after buying a similar size and age house in Indianapolis. I can live with that. :-D

If Trump was a stopped clock he still wouldn't be right twice a day.
