I still hate that it’s a presidential alert. It’s not, he wouldn’t piss on any of us if we were flaming right in front of him. it’s from FEMA and those in the federal work force who actually give a shit about their fellow Americans. Grrr. Grump.
Maybe it is just called a presidential alert. He didn't write the one today.

That's a slow learner! We rent cars when traveling a lot of the time. We always have to remember to check which side of the car the gas tank is on. But we know enough not to pull her move.

There's a < or a > on your dashboard gas gauge that tells you which side the fill spout is.

If you know the country the car came from, that also helps. Or at least it does for my mechanical/automotive engineer hubby, but we usually check anyway. :)

Do we know if any of the Qultists/Thwimpateers are holding accessible "conference calls"?

Long ago I would end up traveling every few months for my then-employer.. I had gotten into the habit of checking the filler location when picking up a rental vehicle..

I clearly remember the first time I saw that little arrow on the gas gauge.. was on a Ford Taurus.. I was just floored by what a simple solution that was... and wondered why it didn't happen decades earlier..

Yeah, but this poor bunny couldn't pull up to the pumps the right way even after knowing which side the filler was on.

Oy.

Edit: Which is why I liked the Montessori schools... they taught kids spacial orientation, carrying without spilling, stuff like that, at a very early age. Are they even still around?

They are, and I just donated 25 plates to a friend who is a teacher. She was very specific about the color and size and shape, because not only does she teach them how to walk with a plate of food (including roll-y grapes) but how to scrape, wash, dry and stack them. I think she has 5 year olds.

Interpol president reported missing after trip to China
By LORI HINNANT AND CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, ASSOCIATED PRESS
PARIS — Oct 5, 2018, 8:24 AM ET

The president of Interpol, a former senior Chinese security official, has been reported missing after he traveled to his native country at the end of September, a French judicial official said Friday.

Meng Hongwei's wife reported Friday that she had not heard from her 64-year-old husband since he left Lyon, France, where Interpol is based, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details of an ongoing investigation.

The French official said Meng did arrive in China. There was no further word on Meng's schedule in China or what prompted his wife to wait until now to report his absence.

In a statement, Interpol said it was aware of reports about Meng's disappearance and added "this is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China." The statement noted that Interpol's secretary general, and not its president, is responsible for the international police agency's operations.

Note: Meng Hongwai was the first Chinese to be elected as president of Interpol in 2016.

Woo-hoo! I just voted this afternoon. I was a bit surprised to see about a dozen people there, either filling out the form to get their ballot, standing in line to get their ballot, or voting. The gal at the counter said that they’ve been very busy today. Yay! Well, if they’re voting for the Democrats, that is.

I used to work at Macy's (left last year). They're supposed to have those decorations up mid-September.

At the store I used to work, they crammed in a Backstage which takes up 25% of the lower level and had to shift and shrink everything else between both floors to accommodate it. My former coworkers told me that there is no space to put the Christmas china out, much less any of the trees and ornaments. No one seems to know how it's going to happen.

First Lady: Under fire after wearing 'colonial' pith helmet in Kenya
By Louise Miner • last updated: 06/10/2018

Melania Trump has come under fire after she chose to wear a hat that some people say is associated with colonialism.

The First Lady wore a pith helmet while on Safari in Kenya.

She showed off the very clean, bright, white hat while travelling in an open-air vehicle to see wild animals.

Pith helmets were traditionally worn by European explorers in parts of Asia and the Middle East in the 19th century but were later used by military officers and soon became a symbol of oppression according to the Guardian.

Mrs Trump's visit to Africa is focussed on child welfare and education. But for many observers it will be remembered for her choice of headgear.

It was just another ordinary Wednesday for Dr. Claire Simeone, a seal specialist who runs the Ke Kai Ola Marine Mammal Center in Kona, Hawaii, until she got a strange, unnerving call on her cell phone. When she picked it up, all she heard was silence on the other line: no static, no breathing, nothing. She didn't think much of it, but soon she found herself in a bizarre and chilling real-life reenactment of When a Stranger Calls.

A few minutes later, her phone started ringing off the hook—nine times over the course of about 15 minutes—and each call was the same: An eerie, empty silence. Worried that there might be some kind of "seal emergency" down at the hospital, she panicked, jumped in her car, and made a beeline back to work.

On the way, her phone rang yet again, and when she took a look at the number, she realized it was one of her own: The calls were coming from inside the hospital. Meanwhile, other people started calling to complain that the mammal center had been calling them "incessantly," but each time they picked up, they heard nothing on the other line—just silence. Simeone wasn't the only victim.

Sigh. I find myself wanting to believe all the polls showing the Democrat candidate ahead and wanting to discount all the polls showing the Republican candidate ahead.

Wikipedia has great articles on the upcoming election. For governors, senators, and representatives they include a section on election predictions from seven to ten organizations providing predictions (Likely D, Lean D, etc.). You can find the articles at:

United States Gubernatorial Elections, 2018
United States Senate Elections, 2018
United States House of Representatives Elections, 2018

Since the 2000 election, and particularly since the 2016 election, I really don't trust the polls. And I'm saying that as someone who just today filled out a political poll for YouGov.

COLIN POWELL SAYS DONALD TRUMP HAS TURNED AMERICA FROM 'WE THE PEOPLE' TO 'ME THE PRESIDENT'
BY BENJAMIN FEARNOW ON 10/7/18 AT 12:53 PM

Former U.S. Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright both questioned the dramatic negative effects the Trump administration has had on the United States and its people Sunday.

Speaking with CNN's Fareed Zakaria Sunday, Powell criticized Trump's attacks on the news media, close U.S. allies and even its own citizens. Powell lamented that his three favorite words in the U.S. Constitution have long been "we the people," but Trump's short time in office has morphed the famous Founding Fathers line into "me the President."

“You see things that should not be happening,” Powell told CNN's Zakaria. “How can a president of the United States get up and say that the media is the enemy of Americans? Hasn’t he read the First Amendment? You are not supposed to like everything the press says, or what anyone says…that’s why we have a First Amendment, to protect that kind of speech.”

Powell reiterated why he became a voice against a Trump presidency during the 2016 campaigns.

“I hope the president can come to the realization that he should really stop insulting people,” Powell continued. “I used this two years ago when I said I could not vote for him in the 2016 election. Why? He insulted everybody. He insulted African-Americans, he insulted women, he insulted immigrants. He insulted our best friends around the world -- all of his fellow candidates up on the stage during the debates. I don’t think that’s what should be coming out of a president of the United States. But I don’t see anything that’s changed in the last two years.”
