So my three friends who have posted their #metoo stories in the last 24 hours has turned into eight so far....and that's just the ones I've seen roll through my timeline. Some are just raunchy 13 year-old fumbling sex assaults but some are horrible. Like ride to the hospital in an ambulance horrible.

Parts of Texas and Florida have reportedly been hit hard by the outage, but people in other states have been reporting problems too. States in the Midwest, like Illinois and Michigan, are also reportedly affected, as well as northeastern states such as New York and Massachusetts.

The outage is affecting people in Houston, New York City, Oklahoma City, Tampa, Atlanta and Washington, DC, according to reports from Downdetector.

Verizon says it's currently working to resolve the issue.

Or someone dug up a cable. A really really really important cable.

Networks of all kinds, be they banks, insurance, government, or telephone, will build out redundant physical paths to ensure their nationwide systems survive a catastrophe, and there are bandwidth brokers that will help you procure access to these paths. What most people didn't realize, including the brokers, is many of these separate physical cables are pulled through the same buried conduits. So, you may think you have a redundant path, but you don't, and one construction dig, landslide, fire, or flood could take out your primary and secondary networks connections.

Yes. A few years ago someone got into an underground Verizon vault in South San Jose and cut a main fiber optic cable. South San Jose and all of southern Santa Clara County including Morgan Hill, Gilroy and parts of Los Gatos lost land line, cell and internet service for a day or more.
911 was down. No ATMs, banks closed and businesses couldn't process credit cards.

It was traumatic to the the public psyche, and you couldn't even instagram it or complain on facebook or twitter.

So I've been running on this HP Windows 8.1 laptop for 5 years. It's been a trooper, as have all my prior HP laptops (yeah, I'm biased, I worked for DEC->Compaq) ..

This thing runs 24/7, except when it is in my carry-on heading for a plane.

But it is time.. the CPU fan bearing is going, and sometimes the screen backlight gets grumpy..

So the new laptop is on it's way. Windows 10. ms.tek has been running on W10 for her side of our business for a while, but the mass of third-party engineering stuff I need to run has kept me away.. so I figured I'd make the jump before the current rig falls over and dies. I have the big (8.1) desktop and an Ubuntu box that I do the heavy lifting on, but the laptop is the (well backed-up) hub of my life..

wish me luck.

IFF you like to hang on the old OS and installation, consider going virtual machine. Some implementations allow to make a clone of the current real machine. Then migrate and run the laid back lifestyle within win10. After five years of hardware innovations the vm may still be running faster than the retiring old unit.

Interesting idea.. I actually already run vms of older laptops to run tools that I can't get on newer OSes..
But never thought about just plopping a vm of the old system onto the new one to migrate..

(Secret decoder ring for folks listening in: VM is "virtual machine".. Long story short, a way to run a whole computer inside a box on another computer..)

Pro-gun rally at Kent State University today led by "Gun Girl" Kaitlin Bennett. About 200 pro-gun folk, 200 police and a larger number of anti-gun counter protestors.

I’d be happy with two consecutive days without rain.

I have finally figured out what is causing my hip pain and tightness. In 2016 I suffered a torn meniscus in my left knee, which did not require surgery but which forced me to wear a knee brace for weeks, which messed with my gait. I had three sessions of PT once the brace come off, and the PT person was mostly concerned about loosening the quad muscle and the tendon above my knee which had tightened up. I was given a 10 minute lecture on foam rolling, to which I replied "yes, I'm familiar with the concept" since my personal trainers are big proponents - every session starts with 5-10 minutes of self directed myofascial release with a variety of tools. My trainers worked with me for months to get my strength and range of motion back safely and slowly, and I consider myself almost back to normal - I have to tape my left knee when doing strenuous exercise, but my right hip remained super tight.

We're working on deadlifts now, and one of the trainers said something the other night that made me realize .... the tightness in my hip isn't a hip problem, it's an IT band problem! :brickwallsmall: OMG. I can fix this. I know what to do. It's going to hurt like a son of a bitch, but I can get better. I have the tools - the Hard Blue Ball of Doom, the Foam Roller From Hell, the Torture Position Known As Figure 4 Stretch...there will be tears, there will be swearing, but I can loosen up my hips and sit crosse legged without pain someday!

IANALBIPOOTV - I am not a lawyer, but I've played one on TV. In fact, IANA (fill in the blank) but chances are I've played on on TV.
