Has anybody had any experience with the new Tovalo steam convection oven and its FedEx meals? HomeChef offers good meals but they require preparation that Tovalo seems already to have done.

I love cooking and have great equipment but at the moment something other than TV dinners is very appealing.

I am sitting out on the upstairs porch. My Fogbowing was just interrupted by loudly honking migrating geese.

Why do they honk when they fly? Does it help them stay in formation?

I shoo dozens of them out of my back yard every day. They honk and shed feathers and leave unwelcome fertilizer everywhere. I have a neighbor who is just outside city limits who bags his limit daily. These geese honk as I'm chasing them before they take flight.

They honk because they are obnoxious vermin and know it irritates us. I :torches: hate them with the passion of a sun or two. They poop on sidewalks instead of on the grass. Rats are better citizens.

Why do geese honk while migrating?

https://www.quora.com/Why-do-geese-honk-while-migrating
Geese are "family" animals. Mated pairs of geese raise a brood and take the years' survivors with them on the youngs' first migration. Several families - or a somewhat extended family group consisting of several generations - often coalesce into a migration "flight" that may become a part of a larger migratory flock. The family groups within a larger flock tend to hang together and they are almost always vocal; on the ground, in the air, while feeding, when waking up, just before they sleep, and so on. It is in a goose's nature to be "chatty."

During migration flights, the family members keep track of one another in the fluid flock by making a series of short honks. When they come closer to staging areas, resting areas, of feeding areas, you may hear the honking pick up in tempo and also hear some additional, longer honks included. We can only assume that this communicates to the others to pay attention or that landing is immanent.

I have several family flocks of Canada Geese near me, all within just a few miles from my home. Each flock has from about dozen to just under 30 birds. After they break into pairs in the Spring, raise a group of goslings to fledge and flight ability, they reform and have daily routes they seem to fly from one pond, grassy knoll, and golf course to the next. Each short hop results in lots of noise by the young birds, but as summer goes on, the flocks are less noisy on their short flights. Once the fall rolls in, the smaller flocks join into larger flocks and migration starts. Morning congregation noise ensues, there is a take-off, and a near constant honking as they begin their journey southward.

What do all these vocalizations mean? We know some are unique within a family. They are for identification and location. Some honks are just a goose's way of being part of the group and adding their own voice to the larger group. Some honks are alerts: to danger, to food, to predators. Other times, the birds, especially the younger birds, just go off with a jag of honking that seems to serve no other purpose than sheer exuberance - the expression of joy and excitement over the ability to fly with their friends and family.

I jog in an area where geese hang out, so I understand the frustration with goose poop (ya got to do some fancy jogging steps in that area to remain poop free) but I confess i love the sound of their honking. I grew up in the country, and the field across from us would flood somewhat in the spring and fall rains, and the geese would land there as they came through on their migration. The sound to this day reminds me of my father, who grew up on a farm and was more in tune with the rhythms of nature than my suburban-dwelling school mates and the families of my dominionist church friends. He'd always comment on the flock, where they were going, whether they were earlier or later this year...my dad didn't talk much, and those little moments made me feel closer to him. I miss him.

You guys are reminding me of a movie I really enjoy watching from time to time. I have it saved on my DVR and usually watch it in the fall. Fly Away Home.

Visiting the in-laws in Kearney, NE once, mr and I went For a walk. We passed a large pond that had a single swan swimming around. Large guy. We were at least 1/4 mile away, way above the pond, on the road, when we first saw him.

He spotted us eventually and started...swanning. Honking, snaking his long neck from side to side, swimming very fast toward the shore. We laughed at his warnings and kept walking, still within sight of the pond but not paying attention . Its noises were getting louder, though. A really loud honk and then this hissing sound made us turn to look. He was charging us, almost up the bank now and really pissed! We ran!

Simple question.

Which image upsets you more?

1. American Nazis and Kluxers marching in American streets,
or
2. Football players not standing before the game.

Take your time.

Thanks, RTH, that was fun! The first spin I got a breathing exercise. That helped calm me down after reading the Newsweek article on our pathological president*. Next one was a pangolin game I haven’t been able to win yet. ;) This will be a nice break from work today.
