That's some weapons-grade stupidity by the members of the club that runs the coffee shop. I mean talk about your fractal wrongness. You can't welcome diversity by banning anyone who doesn't agree with you nor can you achieve justice by employing a double standard. The specialest little snowflakes of intellectual winter, indeed.
I'd let the KKK in my shop, but I'd still tell them that they need to take their hoods and robes off.

Sounds like this group knew exactly what would happen to make progressives look like snowflakes.

I'm interested in the seemingly growing perception of Republican groups as hate groups. Not your father's Republican party.

Along those lines: I read the issue as being with the hats rather than them being republicans (they were asked to remove the hats or leave). The hats are a really in-your-face way of letting everyone in the coffee shop know who those wearing the hats are & what they (likely) think about various topics. THAT violates the rules of the coffee house. I bet if the republicans just got coffee & sat talking quietly, nothing would have happened - but just having a coffee doesn't make a good story with which to rile up the faithful.

Thank you. It’s the inflammatory messaging in plain sight that’s the problem, not the people.

So, my son's girlfriend was at the Army-Navy game yesterday. She texted me a picture of her mother and her with Rex Fucking Tillerson from the VIP area. I ignored my husband's pleas to let it go, and texted back "Did he call Trump a moron again?" :daydream: She responded "haha! Sadly, no."

I had more zingers that I did refrain from utilizing. She texted that her dad said there were more Generals in the warming area than at the Pentagon. I was going to ask if General Michael Flynn was there. And I really wanted to ask if West Point's most holy graduate, Roy S. Moore was there, I do have some self-restraint (occasionally).

Look at the Bitcoin (and several similar stuff) as a vitual "foreign currency", valuated against the US$. Bitcoins and the cousins are generated by a specific algorithm on computers. The early adopters had it easy, later more and more computer power is required to generate those numbers that represent a Bitcoin. A few years back the cost to buy/build such a powerful machine exeeded the value of a Bitcoin as valued against the $ and folks stopped "making" them, with the current valuation against the US$ there must be new attempts. One of them was to use a network of computers, the recent webbrowser scam of browser addons was one method of sharing unsuspected persons computing power.

Who buys them? Those that would use them as foreign currency for trade. The bad guys on the Dark Web were surely the first to use the anonymity and the (theorethical nontracability) for the exchange for unlawful goods. But nowadays everyone has a chance to purchase them on exchanges. There is some consideration to make about the Electronic Wallet. If you loose it you have lost your assets. Happens most often when one does not use sufficient external backups. If your harddisk crashes your assets are in electronic nirwana unrecoverable without backup.

Current "worth" is a hype like the preference for other foreign currencies. One has to be stupid to buy at the current evaluation. A short time ago they were valuated far lower. Lucky for prior owners who can now make a windfall gain before the collapse. Note: payments or trading in Bitcoins is not done with full units but in parts as low as 1/100'000.

Many of our threads contain discussions of freedom of speech, often with me advocating restrictions on hate speech. That is partially because I, like many of our faculty in the AAUP and University Senate, participated in drafting our current rules.

Now our President is consideriVng additions to the rules. This is because a right-wing student group invited a very conservative speaker who was accompanied by several quite unsavory characters, including criminals who had used violence against others. The student group may not have expected this. A small melee broke out when others recognized the criminals. This Connecticut does not want.

I found an article in today's Post to be helpful in thinking about this. "Free-Speech Absolutists Aren't Protecting Democracy. They might even be endangering it."

Some weeks ago I briefly reported that I have a disease of the spinal nerves. It is called spinal stenosis and means that collapsing vertebrae are pressing on nerves that manage many things, including walking, balance, incontinence, and other things.

So I went to Brigham and Women’s Hospital to see a Harvard Medical School neurosurgeon. He confirmed my internist’s diagnosis with the aid of three MRI’s. The stenosis is exactly where the internist thought: in the lumbar region between the 4th and 5th vertebrae. He will plane those vertebrae down some.

The MRI’s included a brain scan. That revealed a pituitary adenoma. Although that is a tumor it is rarely cancerous. The biggest problem is usually when it is functional and emitting unhelpful hormones. It is removed for that reason. However, they can become cancerous. The operation is done through the nostrils.

My only problem is that B&W attracts patients from everywhere, and my problems are not fatal, so my operations keep being delayed.

The stenosis surgery has been successful for my two brothers. Their stenosis was in the lumbar region also. Both had to have rehabilitation before surgery. My vet is waiting for his stenosis surgery because he wants to have it after his 8 month pregnant doctor has her baby. All have said the waiting is difficult. So sorry you have joined the ranks of the stenosis impaired.

I am doing an OK job now. There is a nice kennel not far from here for when I leave.
