I HATE HOSPITALS AND SURGERIES, BUT ... Gonna Be Putting up With Both For a Few Days

I'm going to have to put up with them for a few days.

A couple of months ago, I went in for my routine appointment with my ophthalmologist. During our conversation about "how have things been going with the eyes sort of stuff" I mentioned that a couple of times in the past several weeks, in my left eye it appeared as if someone had pulled down a shade. He told me to immediately see my doctor because that was a classic sign of TIA. He did not, however, see any evidence of a bleed or clot or any such. That was on a Friday.

On the following Tuesday I saw my doc. As usual, he began with his assistant taking my vitals. Upon taking my BP she left the room. Which was a little odd. He came in, with the princess, and told me what my reading was (208/108)!! and that I needed to get to the ER (5 blocks away) and do not stop and collect $200. He called ahead to tell them I was coming. He then decided to do a quick EKG and give me the strip to take with me. It was then discovered I am in AFib. Luckily a cotrolled AFib but AFib nonetheless. No idea for how long, as my last EKG was 2 years prior.

So the princess and I head to ER. Got in to ER quickly and then spent the next about 36 hours in the hospital seeing all sorts of specialists and having all sorts of tests run. I was discharged with appointments made for lots more tests, all manner of MRIs, CTs, more doppler ultrasounds, neurological tests and a stress test (which surprisingly, with the exception of the AFib, was a normal read which indicates all the vessels carrying blood to my heart are good). YAY for me!!

What was discovered in the end, and to make a short story long (which I think I've done) my left carotid internal artery has a blockage of roughly 90%. It's a very small portion (.5 cm) above the bifurcation. There were basically two choices to remedy the issue (excluding stroke, heart attack or death) and that endarterectomy or stenting.

Upon visiting with my vascular surgeon, because of the location of the blockage (basically right behind my jaw) to do the endarterectomy they would need to dislocate and likely break my jaw. Or we could stent going in through the groin. :cantlook: I opted to do the stent, which they will be performing tomorrow (2/19/19) at 11:30 AM. The main risks of the surgery are stroke, heart attack, or death (not necessarily in that order  ) and we're sincerely hoping those don't occur. :fingerwag:

So as soon as one of us can, we'll (either the princess or I or both) let the boogle know how things went.

That is all.

Ooooh, realist. So sorry! I had that e-ticket once. It’s not what you want to hear from the ER doc.

Good on ya for not ignoring symptoms. Or good on Princess. Tots and pears for the best outcome. :bighug: :bighug:

Sending positive thoughts to you and the princess. Dayum! It's tough finding out you are HUMAN, not SUPERHUMAN.

I’ve tried to be as helpful as possible though realist has resisted my attempts to keep him in bubble wrap the last 6 weeks. So mainly I go to the vascular surgeons, neurologists etc and cry. We are fortunate to have some of the best doctors in the country. Our GP even dropped by the hospital after teaching a class at Johns Hopkins and gave some input about the cardiologists, vascular surgeon etc. Calmed me down a little. I will admit that between this and my father having a stroke Thanksgiving week then passing away last month and changing jobs a month ago the holiday season was not the greatest.

It almost drove me crazy that the surgeon wanted to do surgery ASAP yet his own schedule turned ASAP into several weeks. But I’m confident in the surgeon and realist is a fighter (well, not with me) so I am going into this very optimistic. I will of course be at the hospital crying all day because that’s just what I do. His youngest daughter flew up yesterday to help and she’s very capable.

But certainly we will gladly accept any good karma credits to get him well.
