Great white shark spotted in Long Island Sound for first time ever: Researchers

https://abcnews.go.com/US/great-white-s ... d=63157568
The great white was being tracked Monday by the ocean research group Ocearch, which has been tracking the shark since last year, Chris Fischer, founder of the research group, told ABC News.

"Be advised! For the first time ever, we are tracking a white shark in the Long Island Sound," Ocearch researchers tweeted Monday.

:snippity:

He said his group first spotted the great white in Nova Scotia last fall, where he was pulled from the water, tagged with a tracking device and released back into the wild. He said his research team named the shark Cabot after the Italian navigator John Cabot, who explored North America in 1497 under the commission of Henry VII of England.

:snippity:

Since Ocearch has been tracking the Cabot, the great white has traveled all the way to Florida. "Now he's making his way back north, probably back to the Nova Scotia region," Fischer said. "Something got his attention and brought him into the Sound to have a look."

I love their website where you can follow the path of the various sharks. Lydia is my favorite, but she hasn't pinged in 2 years. I hope it's because her unit has failed or fallen off. She was most unusual and made a several trips out to the deepest trenches in the Atlantic Ocean, unlike the majority of the tagged sharks. She made it safely past all the longlines a couple of times, but I was always concerned that eventually she would be hooked.

Summerti....m....e,

And the traffic is heavy. :(

Also, there is no LIRR service to the South Fork on Memorial Day Weekend.

LIRR: Speonk derailment halts service on Montauk branch

http://longisland.news12.com/story/4053 ... -in-speonk

No one was hurt in the derailment. :)

Since I am on a low-carb diet I can't have pizza or pasta at our favorite Italian restaurant. :( So it is calamari salad for me.

Manuel Canel does our yard and beds. Good to see this shop back in operation. :)

Jamesport garden center and gift shop returns after two-year hiatus

https://riverheadnewsreview.timesreview ... ar-hiatus/
The garden center, which has been in business for about 27 years and was formerly known as Porter’s Colorful Gardens, reopened May 10. Owner Michele DeVito said she felt that even after a number of misfortunes — including the deaths of two loved ones and a fire that took down the garden’s shed and surrounding structures late last month — it was time to come back.

:snippity:

Manuel Canel, an immigrant from Guatemala who owns Canel Landscaping, worked with Ms. Porter to begin building necessary structures in 1989. The Riverhead News-Review recognized Mr. Canel in 2006 for becoming the first Hispanic member of the Jamesport Fire Department. To this day, he works for Colorful Gardens as co-owner and landscaper.

:snippity:

But Ms. DeVito’s husband, James, was not well either, and money grew tight. To pay for his medical insurance, Ms. DeVito decided to go back to school in 2012. At the age of 49, she enrolled in a nine-month medical assistant program at the Branford Hall Career Institute in Amityville. She worked through a few externships, until settling in with East End Cardiology in Riverhead a year later.

:snippity:

Mr. Canel’s mother, father and relatives all work at Colorful Gardens. Once again growing and selling annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and hanging baskets with her now-extended family, Ms. DeVito said she feels great.

On the North Fork we have some very low railroad bridges.

School bus carrying kids to park hits railroad bridge on Raynor Avenue

https://riverheadlocal.com/2019/06/07/s ... or-avenue/
A school bus carrying about 30 Riverhead Charter School students got stuck under the railroad bridge on Raynor Avenue this morning.

No one was injured in the mishap, police said. The children were on their way to a field day even at Stotzky Park, when the bus, northbound from Main Street, clipped the train trestle. They were safely evacuated from the bus and boarded onto another bus to continue to the park.

Police called a heavy-duty tow truck to the scene, but they were able to back the bus, operated by First Student Bus Co., out of the jam. The bridge has a clearance of 8 feet, 2 inches, according to signs posted on it.

Raynor Avenue between Main and Pulaski streets was closed for about two hours.

Wind Turbine Fire Breaks Out At Winery

https://patch.com/new-york/northfork/wi ... newsletter
According to Southold Town Police, the fire broke out on May 30 at 1:29 p.m. at Shinn Estate Vineyards on Oregon Road in Mattituck.

Southold Town Police and Mattituck Fire Department responded to the actively burning wind turbine; the Mattituck Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire before it was able to cause any injury or further damage, police said.

The cause of the fire was deemed to have been an electrical malfunction, police said.
The Shinn Estates Winery prides itself on biodynamic winegrowing and sustainable farming practices. This was their wind turbine-

Tomorrow, Saturday, is forecast to be sunny and 78F. Traffic will be heavy.

To top it off-

Police announce road closures for Simonsen street dedication Saturday afternoon

https://riverheadlocal.com/2019/06/13/p ... afternoon/
Riverhead Town Police today announced road closings Saturday afternoon in Jamesport for ceremonies dedicating South Jamesport Avenue as Det. Brian Simonsen Way.

South Jamesport Avenue between Peconic Bay Boulevard and Main Road (NY Route 25) and Main Road between Washington Avenue and Manor Lane will be closed beginning at 12:45 p.m., police said. Expect delays in the area beginning at 12:30 p.m., police said.

The road dedication ceremony, to be held on the lawn of the George Young Community Center, on the corner of South Jamesport Avenue and Main Road, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.
It is nice that they are remembering him in this way.

There are practical considerations for those of us who live right here. Main Road is one of just 2 east-west roads on the North Fork. The detouring traffic in this area will be horrendous. :(

Det. Brian Simonsen was a member of the NYPD which has over 38,000 police officers. I expect a large delegation of NYPD officers to come out for this event. The George Young Community Center has only 30 parking spaces. :?

Tomorrow is also the Mattituck Strawberry Festival, a major traffic nightmare on the northern east-west road.
