Our new refrigerator was delivered yesterday. They had to take off the doors to get it thru the door between the dining room and the kitchen.

That only took 80 years. ;)

County will go out to bid on north shore ‘Rails to Trails’ project this fall

https://riverheadlocal.com/2018/07/30/b ... this-fall/
The long-anticipated north shore “Rails to Trails” project is back on track again, according to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

Bellone on Friday announced that he signed a bond resolution appropriating the county’s $500,000 share of the nearly $9 million cost of the 10-mile recreational trail along what was once the Long Island Railroad’s Wading River branch. The track was decommissioned by the LIRR in 1938. It is now owned by the Long Island Power Authority.

They only needed to take the handles off my refrigerator. Easy peasy. It's a full 28 cu ft model. IMO all houses should have 42 inch doors on the front. One of these days when I'm an older yet codger I'll appreciate it when I'm going through with a wheelchair.

Main doors are generally 36" here on newer houses. Even that's a pain sometimes. My bedroom doors are 36 also. I haven't measured the bathroom doors. They are sliding doors and appear to be about 36. I'm in a two year old house, though.

Today is my birthday but the restaurant we wanted to go to for my birthday isn't open on Tuesdays so it was last night that we headed over to the Riverhead riverfront. :)

This unassuming little restaurant serves the best Mediterranean cuisine anywhere.

After dinner we strolled along the Peconic River.

At Grangabel Park the Peconic River is very narrow which is probably why the road crosses there between Riverhead and Southampton.

Image

Actually, you can make a good case that the Town of Southold was the first English Colony in 1640 when 13 families took up permanent residence. The Southampton "colony" was more of temporary exploration. ;)

Grangabel Park.

The mighty Peconic River. To the right is the island that is most of the park. To the left a bit of the park that is actually on the South Fork. (There is a wider branch of the river on the other side of the island.)

Image

The open air stage which is located where the water tower once stood.

Image

They are serious about prohibiting alewife fishing in the park ;)

They are building new commercial space and affordable apartments.

Image

Like Greenport, Riverhead has a serious lack of access to local farm stands (the nearest ones to downtown Riverhead are almost 2 miles away and the county bus service only runs twice an hour and costs a prohibitive $2.25). Weekly farmers markets provide residents with easy access to fresh farm produce.

Starting tomorrow I'm going to count wild turkeys for the State of New York. :-D

DEC seeks help counting wild turkeys

https://riverheadlocal.com/2018/07/30/d ... d-turkeys/
Residents are being asked to help the state with a survey of the wild turkey population.

The State DEC has conducted a wild turkey sighting survey every summer since 1996. The survey’s goal is to track wild turkey populations and estimate the number of wild turkey poults (young of the year) per hen statewide. The survey allows DEC to gauge reproductive success and predict fall harvest potential. See the DEC website for additional information.

During August, survey participants record the sex and age composition of all flocks of wild turkeys observed during normal travel.

Anyone interested in participating can download a the survey form, instructions and the data sheet here.

Today we went to lunch at the diner in downtown Riverhead that first opened in 1932.

Image

Image

Image

The diner has changed little over the years.

Our younger daughter ordered a traditional Depression era favorite- a black bean burger with avocado on gluten-free bread. ;)

Image

I had a vanilla egg cream and the Reuben's brother sandwich which is similar to a Reuben sandwich except that it has pastrami instead of corned beef, grilled onions instead of sauerkraut and mustard instead of Russian dressing.

After lunch we ventured over to a less fashionable part of the South Fork.

There was a sale.

As minutes started turning into hours I went out to the car and surfed the web on my smartphone.

Almost bought this but didn't.

So, are these bird sightings, or are you self-reporting your alcohol consumption?

Well, a part of the reason the NY DEC wants turkey info is to set the limit on the number of turkeys that hunters are allowed to take. The state rules about hunting turkeys, which once were extinct in NYS, are fairly restrictive-

https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/32162.html

In the brief Fall season the bag limit for 2018 is one. You have to hunt using shotguns or bows, no rifles. You have to send one leg to the DEC for age and sex data collection. You have to report when you take a turkey within 7 days.

It is much easier to buy a Butterball. ;)

They tell me wild turkeys are tough birds. I will stick with Butterballs or the fresh equivalent.

In Aquebogue-

Fork's Fanatic Feral Feline Fanciers Face Fotoshoot! :o

Animal rescue group dresses up for classic car calendar to raise funds to help care for feral cats

https://riverheadlocal.com/2018/08/01/a ... eral-cats/

Image
The Modern Snack Bar on Main Road in Aquebogue provides an ideal backdrop for a photo shoot featuring classic cars and women dressed in 50s-era clothing. The models are members of North Fork Country Kids Rescue, a group that cares for feral cat colonies and aims to educate people about the animals.

The photos, which were shot on Sunday morning at the Snack Bar, will be used in a wall calendar produced by the group and sold to raise money to support their efforts.

“One hundred percent of the proceeds goes to support the animals,” said Virginia Scudder of Aquebogue, a founder of North Fork Country Kids Rescue. The group conducts TNR — trap, neuter and return — efforts throughout the local area to control the feral cat population. They provide medical and other care for the colonies, Scudder said.
The big guy is the restaurant's co-owner. Not sure what the doggie is doing there. :?

:? Those beaches are about 12 miles west of our town's LI Sound beaches.

Swimming Banned At Rocky Point Beaches

https://patch.com/new-york/millerplace- ... nt-beaches
Sound Beach Property Owners Association Beach-West, Beech Road Beach and Broadway Beach, all located in the Town of Brookhaven, are closed to swimmers due to the finding of bacteria at levels in excess of acceptable criteria, health officials said Wednesday afternoon.

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.

Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
