BBC America has been playing a lot of their "Planet Earth" series lately. I've noticed they're including a lot of drone shots, which are especially effective in the "Blue Planet" (ocean) episodes.

Banksy auction prank leaves art world in shreds
Canvas of Girl With Balloon passes through shredder in frame shortly after £1m sale

Banksy has played what could be one of the most audacious pranks in art history, with one of his best-known works self-destructing after being sold at auction for just over £1m.

Girl With Balloon was the final item in an auction at Sotheby’s in London on Friday night and its sale price equalled the artist’s previous auction record of £1.04m.

However, shortly after the hammer came down on the item, the canvas suddenly passed through a shredder installed in the frame.

Banksy posted an image on Instagram of the shredded work dangling from the bottom of the frame with the title “Going, going, gone …”

“It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” said Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s senior director and head of contemporary art in Europe.

It is unclear whether the prank will have destroyed or enhanced the value of the work.

Saw that. Love it - especially the part where everyone is trying to figure out if it's worth more now than it was intact.

Saint Mark mosaic, missing for decades, returns to Cyprus

One of the last missing pieces of Byzantine art stolen from Cyprus in the 1970s has been handed back to the country by a renowned Dutch art investigator.

For Brand, dubbed the "Indiana Jones of the art world" because of his exploits to recover stolen works, the handover was a high point in his lifelong interest in the Byzantine saint, and the result of a nearly two-year chase across Europe.

"It was in the possession of a British family, who bought the mosaic in good faith more than four decades ago," Brand told AFP.

"They were horrified when they found out that it was, in fact, a priceless art treasure, looted from the Kanakaria Church after the Turkish invasion," he said.

The family agreed to return it to "the people of Cyprus" in return for a small fee to cover restoration and storage costs, he added.

Paper sculptures - COOL QUOTIENT
These sculptures may look like they're carved out of stone, but they're actually made out of thousands of sheets of paper.

Wow! He is truly an artist. I plan to rewatch so I can recreate the van Gogh on my nails. This makes me feel better about learning nail art which uses the same art brushes (only smaller) and acrylic painting techniques as "regular" art. The canvas is just smaller.

You've seen the imposing lion statue gracing our front plaza, now see how it came to be. At 27 feet tall, Rex is the world's largest cantilever bronze animal statue in the world, and creating him was no small task. 🦁

Should you be in London, a wonderful little gallery to visit is the Guildhall Gallery, in the City. It doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves. This painting, made in 1901, is called 'The Garden of Eden', by Hugh Goldwyn Riviere, and is one of my favourites. The setting is a London park on a cold, wet, winter afternoon. I always imagine the couple to be in a clandestine relationship which is perhaps frowned on because of a class divide. Despite their somewhat dreary surroundings, they are clearly in love, and in their own Eden. When I saw the painting up close, I noticed Riviere had painted tiny droplets of water clinging to the tree branches, a lovely touch which quite moved me.

Thanks. I'm heading back to the States later this week, but I'll be back out again for a while after New Years - and I'm definitely going to be trying to spend more time away from my room, yet not in front of a computer at school. This definitely goes on the list.
