Was it Seabiscuit that had to have the companionship of another animal to be mentally healthy? Rather like me and Cisco.

We need Sterngard back. In both private and public he had so much to say abiut dogs. He was inordinately prejudiced against cats.
So ask him.

We are on a visit to the chilipup at college this weekend. We brought Auggie dog with us and are staying at a Stony Creek Hotel which is dog friendly.

He's not sure what to make of it, but he seems to be enjoying himself. He's getting a lot of positive attention from people.

There are a handful of restaurants on the illinois side of the quad cities that have dog friendly patio areas.

Apparently dog friendly is against the law in Iowa.

Good for Auggie. He can say he's been to college.

Have a friend of a friend that is being forced into a horrible situation. She has to move and cannot take her animals. We are giving her numbers for some rescue orgs and other resources but is having a problem finding homes. Anyone in Ohio, or nearby, please spread the message?

I'm not a dog person, but I watched a lot of this when I was working in London around 1976

Forget Football — It's Sheepdog Trial Season in Northern California

Football season might be in full swing and baseball is hitting the home stretch, but there's another sport capturing the attention of people in Northern California: sheepdog trials.

Earlier this month, hundreds of people gathered at the Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show in Boonville to watch the annual sheepdog trials.

The herding event is a competitive dog sport that dates back to the mid-19th century in Europe, New Zealand and Australia, in which highly trained herding dogs move sheep around a field, fences, gates or enclosures as directed by their handlers.

The sheepdog trials in Boonville took place in a field at the county fairgrounds where the local high school plays football games and the rodeo takes place every year. There are four obstacles on the 100-yard-long grassy arena: a square pen, two gates side by side with a 6-foot-gap between them and a plywood chute that looks like a large funnel.

We're looking for a Pittie playmate for Pacino. This girl Mocha is a candidate:

From the story of Seabiscuit, the video of the cow playing with a medicine ball, and the dog sneaking in rides on a pony, I infer that a playmate for Pacino need not be of the same species. I like that.

Friends,

I like dogs, I have owned dogs and generally am quite understanding of dog behavior, if not that of some owners.

Yesterday, 8 October, I was taking my early morning walk when I was attacked from behind by two large pit bull type dogs. I was bitten, knocked down and only escaped when a home owner heard my yelling and helped me fend off the dogs while seeking shelter in his house. Even with the barrier of the glass storm door the dogs continued to attack, lunging against the glass. They then held us in the house until the arrival of the police and owner. I’ve now gone to the doctor, gotten a tetanus booster and started a course of antibiotics. I still don’t know if the dogs had been vaccinated for rabies.

The owner had choices. He could have apologized. He could have offered to pay my medical bills, put me in contact with his insurance carrier, had his attorney call my attorney, put his dogs in quarantine with the vet. But he didn’t

Don’t be this guy

It is absolutely unforgivable for the owner not to have had the dogs inoculated for rabies and not to be able to provide documentation of it. Ours always have their rabies cert tags on their collars. Always.

Nothing can be generalized about the breed from your attack. It could have been German Shepherds, Rottweilers, even Labs. However, these two particular dogs have now shown themselves to be capable of realized aggression against a human, and as such should be euthanized, IMHO.

And that's coming from a bona fide dog lover.

I’d prefer to see the dog owner euthanized.
