Tfg continues to push the insurrection. Yeah, we can laff at his stupid media plans, but he continues to spread disinformation and to control the GQP. He's not done yet.
The events of Jan. 6, on the other hand, proved that Trump and his most die-hard supporters are prepared to defy constitutional and democratic norms, just as revolutionary movements have in the past. While it might be shocking to learn that normal, decent Americans can support a violent assault on the Capitol, it shows that Americans as a people are not as exceptional as their founding principles and institutions. Europeans who joined fascist movements in the 1920s and 1930s were also from the middle classes. No doubt many of them were good parents and neighbors, too. People do things as part of a mass movement that they would not do as individuals, especially if they are convinced that others are out to destroy their way of life.
It would be foolish to imagine that the violence of Jan. 6 was an aberration that will not be repeated. Because Trump supporters see those events as a patriotic defense of the nation, there is every reason to expect more such episodes. Trump has returned to the explosive rhetoric of that day, insisting that he won in a “landslide,” that the “radical left Democrat communist party” stole the presidency in the “most corrupt, dishonest, and unfair election in the history of our country” and that they have to give it back. He has targeted for defeat those Republicans who voted for his impeachment — or criticized him for his role in the riot. Already, there have been threats to bomb polling sites, kidnap officials and attack state capitols. “You and your family will be killed very slowly,” the wife of Georgia’s top election official was texted earlier this year. Nor can one assume that the Three Percenters and Oath Keepers would again play a subordinate role when the next riot unfolds. Veterans who assaulted the Capitol told police officers that they had fought for their country before and were fighting for it again. Looking ahead to 2022 and 2024, Trump insists “there is no way they win elections without cheating. There’s no way.” So, if the results come in showing another Democratic victory, Trump’s supporters will know what to do. Just as “generations of patriots” gave “their sweat, their blood and even their very lives” to build America, Trump tells them, so today “we have no choice. We have to fight” to restore “our American birthright.”

The thread title is confusing. I think you mean “insurrection,” rather than “resurrection.”
As far as resurrections go, SNL had an interesting observation about Bannon and his contempt referral:
“This is what Bannon wants, it just plays into his whole persecuted Messiah complex," he said. "Bannon is similar to Jesus in that it looks like he’s been dead for 3 days."

Yeah, I was thinking here we go again - or repeat inssurecting.

Trump had been priming the pump of rigged elections for almost a decade when he claimed Obama would steal, and then later stole the election from Romney. Trump lamented he the lost the popular vote to Hillary claiming she somehow rigged it. But, prior to that during the primaries, he pilloried Ted Cruz for stealing the Iowa polls. No one can win fairly against Trump. He is always cheated and abused by his opponents. They always take something that rightfully belongs to him, and he wants it back.

Whether in business or politics, he has one game - win at all costs. He is a dangerously charismatic leader that has captured the hearts of a lot of people, and there's not much we can do about it except to lend his name to Pandora's Box. I am imagining that even after he leaves this mortal coil, he will be deified and made greater than he was in life with attributions that even he may not have claimed himself.
This I don’t get. His constant aggrieved state validates and nurtures the constant aggrieved state of his followers, few if any of whom seem to be in uncomfortable circumstances.
He’s not so charismatic that they don’t boo when he says “get the vaccine.”
Possibly “charismatic” in so far as he seems/pretends to be against the “common enemy” “elite/establishment/progressives/libtards/ socialists/commies”. Ticks an awful lot of boxes for the permanently aggrieved/discontented.
I've never thought of him as charismatic, unless you are speaking in the Hitler sense. I've always thought of him as a showman.

Same here. As much as I despised Reagan, he was charismatic. As much as I despised Bush 43, he was charming. I always thought he'd be a fun neighbor, if he'd stayed the hell out of politics.
trump has always turned my stomach. I think it's the narcissism.
Reagan always seemed fake to me as president and as an actor.

I don't think he was good at either.

I agree about 43. I know he doesn't drink, but I always thought that he'd be a great guy to sit and have a beer with. Maybe talk about baseball. After all, he did once own the Texas Rangers.

I agree. To me he his main characteristic is his willingness to be abusive, all day, every day, without restraint, using whatever power he has gleaned by his abuse to make the abuse worse.
And he gleans power by 100 percent mirroring the worse of humanity. Setting his pre-presidency life aside, since running for office, he has given his racist self-centered, ignorant base exactly what it wants, with greater and greater intensity. It's all he does, as far as I'm concerned. He is a zero, or, if you like, an empty vessel, filled with the sickness that exists in America today.
Charismatics are popular because they are charming and (at least appear to be) trustworthy.
TFA is none of the above. Some people support him because he's a racist asshole, and they want a racist asshole in the White House. Some supported him because he was a firebrand and a crook. Everybody knew he was a crook, but some want him to be in there breaking things - and we were lucky he was so incompetent and lazy, or he would have broken more. And millions voted for him because he was the Republican, and they are just never going to vote for a Democrat.
But that's not charisma. That's the appeal of the outlaw. The weird thing is, they like to pretend he's a tough guy, when he is manifestly a physical coward and a serious crybaby.
I'm Foggy and I forget if I approved this message.
DJT is a very charismatic person, but people often forget that charisma is not a single axis trait where you can scale each individual for their effect on 'people'. It is more like a matrix, with different forms appealing to different personality types. His base is responding to his charisma because it is packaged in a form that resonates with them, and he is seen as uncharismatic by people who do not respond to it.

Which a bunch of them are as well. They like him in part because they see themselves in him. They think bullying others shows how "tough" you are.

Don't forget they are all intellectual cowards as well. I mean, have you ever tried to have a respectful good-faith discussion with a Trump supporter? How did it go? Not well, am I right?

I would have to disagree here.

Agreed. We've never seen this kind of adulation of a politician prior to Trump. Even outliers like Nader and Sanders didn't get this kind of devotion. Trump is the epitome of charismatic, and he will not go away quietly. Even if thoroughly discredited, punished, and imprisoned, he will always be cherished by a number of people, and they will work to keep his myth alive. Covid is not the disease we should be worried about.

“He just says what everyone already thinks” is shorthand for what the people who love him would never publicly admit, which is that they, too, are racist, misogynistic assholes.
