Is Douglas Fir a calico? That is very rare for a male cat.
No. White and I believe brown tabby.

Our new kitty Inky had her first vet visit last Friday night. I was hoping to put off taking her to the vet for a while, since she was fully vaxed and checked out at the shelter, but she developed symptoms of a UTI so in she went.

The doctor agreed with me that symptomatically she probably had a UTI and prescribed antibiotics (we decided to hold off on the $300 urinalysis, since two days earlier I dropped $500 on my 12 year old lynx point boy (he was vomiting and not eating for two days, and it was time for his senior panel which is expensive, he got anti nausea meds and a fluid shot, and he's fine now). When I got her home and tried to give her her liquid meds, I discovered she's, shall we say, difficult to medicate. She's young and strong and did NOT want that medicine anywhere near her little mouth, thank you very much. Attempts at purrito-ing were useless. I finally had to resort to the kitty crack known as Gerber meat flavor baby food.

She's been taking her meds like a champ as long as it's mixed in with a teaspoon of Gerber baby food, preferably turkey. And she's clever - the other cats get a taste of baby food on a plate too, and she's figured out that she needs to run to "her" room and let me close the door on her and her plate of "treat" so the other kitties don't gobble theirs down and try to go after hers. Smart girl! And it's working, she seems to be feeling better.

The worst part of the whole ordeal was that when I plopped her into the carrier to put her in the car, I was so afraid that she thought she was being taken back to the shelter, I felt so bad for her. I kept saying "you're our kitty now, you're never going back to the shelter, you're just going to the vet so you'll feel better." I'm not sure she believed me until we got to the vet.

Nice update on your kitties, P.K. :bighug:

Thanks for the tip about "kitty crack known as Gerber meat flavor baby food".
My cat is getting old and very picky. She does NOT like being dosed.

It really is! Mr. K had to do the meds while I was at work yesterday, and couldn't believe their reaction to the sound of the jar being opened!

I love Inky's name. I had to take Tulip in for UTI shortly after bringing her home. Apparently it's fairly common for cats that have been in foster/shelter to develop a UTI from the stress of moving to a new home. Tulip did pretty well taking her antibiotics when I put it inside the Greenies pocket, but by the time we got down to the last two doses, she would eat the pocket, but leave the pill. So I broke it into very small pieces (already pretty small) and gave it to her in a dab of food. After I was sure she ate the pill I put the rest of her food in the bowl. They figure things out pretty quickly!

Looking forward to more updates and photos of Inky! :lovestruck:

Love the foster cat dad, too.

Like Tolland, I'm looking for what I can do in retirement to continue (or begin again) to contribute working towards a better society. But at the same time, I want critters in my life! And also, too, don't want to leave my offspring with a bunch of critters. I was thinking about contacting hospice services to offer to take in a loved animal companion, but temporarily homing baby critters is another option.

Lani

That is a very good idea.
Our veterinary school has a program in which the vet students and other volunteers go to the houses of elderly people and help them take care of their pets. Sometimes they walk the dog, sometimes they feed the pets, sometimes they medicate the pets when the owner cannot. This is a great program as it allows the elderly person to keep his/her pet at home, even if it has a problem that needs medicating once a day. You might check into something like that.

A lot of organizations e.g. humane societies or rescue groups need people to foster adult animals which is often easier than baby ones. This prevents the animals from being euthanized as people foster the critters until they are adopted. Another idea is to walk dogs. I have a friend whose father is retired and loves dogs so he reliably goes to the humane society a few hours a week and walks and plays with the dogs.

You are very kind to want to do something like this.
