Japanese volcano that featured in Bond movie erupts
Richard Lloyd Parry, Tokyo
June 22 2018, 12:00pm,

Japan has about 100 active volcanoes. Mount Shinmoe last erupted in April

A volcano that served as the fictional lair of one of James Bond’s villainous enemies erupted in Japan today, sending smoke and ash thousands of feet into the sky.

Mount Shinmoe on Kyushu, the country’s southernmost island, last erupted in April, prompting warnings by the Japan Meteorological Agency to stay at least 3km from the 4,662ft peak. The volcano has erupted at least 11 times since the 18th century. Sean Connery led a band of ninjas to penetrate the villain’s lair beneath Mount Shinmoe in the 1967 film.

The mountain was the setting for the climactic scene of You Only Live Twice, the 1967 film in which Sean Connery, as James Bond, leads a band of ninjas to penetrate the base of the supervillain Ernst Stavro Blofeld beneath the volcanic crater.

Japan has about 100 active volcanoes and although eruptions are common fatalities are…

Puna residents complain of squatters, looters and thieves
http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/06/2 ... d-thieves/
Looting and squatting in vacant houses is a growing problem in some of the Puna neighborhoods that have been evacuated and closed off to the public because of the Kilauea eruption, according to area residents.

Robert Petricci, a longtime Lower Puna resident, said his home on Pohoiki Road was in good shape when he left it, but “there are people running around in there, going house to house and looting our homes, and we can’t get in there and defend them.”

That comment at a public meeting at the Pahoa High School cafeteria Tuesday evening prompted scattered applause from the audience of about 200 Puna residents.

Petricci said outsiders are entering the evacuation zone on boats that land at Pohoiki Harbor. “We need the National Guard down there at Pohoiki checking ID’s, and we’ve been trying to get this for a while now before it happened, and it’s getting worse and worse and worse.”

I hope Pele catches up with them and teaches them a hard lesson.

There have been new lava flows to the southwest of the Kapoho Bay/Vacationland area over the last couple of days.

At about 0:26 there are people visible in the lower left of the video. The lava flow is huge!

Here in Connecticut i assume I am safe from volcanoes. Not so sure about North America's most destructive earthquake, that of the New Madrid fault line.

Connecticut is pretty safe. This map is easier on the Lower Mississippi than some I've seen.

If it is totally flat between you and the Confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio, then you might have to worry.

The flow is not only huge aka wide, but it has an impressive speed. Did see a video on LiveLeak the other day, may look to find the link (since a recent site update on LL the links don't embed the video, so it's not inviting to view the stuff).

I haven't posted much lately because this eruption is now a slow moving disaster. No exciting updates. Just an ongoing nightmare.

My last years on the Big Island in the late '80's - early 90's were similar, but few homes were in the rift zone. Of those, most were yurts or modular and could be moved to safety. The lava did take out part of Kalapana, which was very small, and there was more time to evacuate. Some roads were blocked by lava, and air quality was bad.

I stood in the beach road through Kalapana and watched the lava advancing while the few shops there sold the last of their wares.

A block away, people tried to move the old painted church, but termite damage broke it into pieces. Stories say that Father Damien first served on that site. Eventually, the pieces were moved and reconstructed.

The current state of affairs now is similar to then, except the costs to the county and the number of people who lost homes are much larger. BI is now financially strapped with the costs of 24/7 protecting people and property, while coping with at least 2,000 people now homeless and suffering from loss and trauma, while its major source of income - tourism - fails.

The eruptions do not seem to be slowing down at all. Has there been any predictions as to when this may end? The destruction is just devastating.

That is a lovely and scary picture. I don't know if Pele is dancing yet, but she is definitely having fun. Her parties are nothing if not unique.

In the last two days there has been significant expansion of flow to the north and southwest of the Kapoho/Vacationland area. I believe that all the buildings east of 137 and south of 132 are now gone. A flow north of 132 and just west of 137 is heading toward Cinderland EcoVillage.

To the SW, lava is 0.3 miles from Ahalanui Park and the nearby charter school. They had been threatened by lava coming from the west a few weeks ago.

Image

milekalincoln#LeilaniEstatesEruption #KilaueaVolcano LATEST (July 9 at 8 PM): According to USGS HVO geologists in the field, at last check the southern end of the active fissure 8 flow margin north of the Ahalanui Park, known as the warm ponds. The flow margin is estimated to be about 500 meters or 0.3 miles from the park. These great images from @BruceOmori of @ExtremeExposureFineArtGallery capture the location of the flow fronts and overflows. The Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency is reporting that Fissure 8 continues to be very active and its flow is producing a broad ocean entry along the shoreline, and continues to expand into Kapoho Beach Lots and north of Four Corners intersection. There is no immediate threat at this time. However, residents in the Cinder Road area are advised to be prepared for voluntary evacuation if necessary. Kapoho Beach Lots and the Four Corners area are closed to any access. According to the Hawaiian volcano Observatory: “Early this afternoon observers reported multiple overflows occurring along both sides of the main lava channel, in an area extending from near the "Y" intersection at Pohoiki Road eastwards to an area just west of Kapoho Crater. Overflows on the upper part of the channel did not extend beyond areas previously covered in lava. Overflows further down the channel have reached beyond the flow field, including one flow lobe that is moving northeast from the main channel towards Cinder Rd. Residents are urged to heed warnings and notices from Hawaii County Civil Defense. Based on information from ground observers and morning and afternoon overflights, the lower part of the main lava channel has undergone significant reorganization. In particular, the channel that had been open near Four Corners is now mostly crusted over, and plumes from ocean entry are significantly reduced. It is likely this is due to a blockage that formed in the early morning in the main channel upstream of Kapoho Crater. Flow volumes coming out of Fissure 8 remain significant, and it is possible that changes in flow channels will continue to occur in the coming days. Fissure 22 continues to exhibit weak spattering. @hawaiinewsnow #HInews #HawaiiNews

That happened faster than I expected. :(

Yesterday's USGS map is already out of date. Perhaps the main F8 flow is now turning to the south before it reaches the Green Lake crater aka Kapoho cone. If so the entire Pohoiki area could be at risk.
