Prensa Latina
El Salvador on Alert Due to Possible Seismic Swarm

San Salvador, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) An earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale closed a telluric day in El Salvador, shaken 275 times by a seismic swarm that killed one person, it was reported today.

The municipality of Antiguo Cuscatlán was the epicenter of the earthquakes that disturbed the Salvadorans, who were also worried due to unfounded rumors of supposed tectonic plate movements or the awakening of San Salvador volcano.

The authorities of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources had to, in front of the cameras, ask the population to remain calm and to trust the information coming only from official and scientific channels.

Minister Lina Pohl said that the earthquakes are the result of the usual movement in the faults located south of this capital, and recalled that swarms like this have shaken San Salvador 18 times since 1986. ...

Experts ruled out that this seismic swarm indicates the imminence of an earthquake, although the authorities insist on remaining calm and following the guidelines to avoid human and material damages, if possible.

Shock for tourists in high season
Greece-Turkey earthquake: Two killed on island of Kos

At least two people were killed in the tourist destination of Kos

A strong earthquake in the Aegean Sea has killed at least two people on the Greek island of Kos, officials say.

The 6.7-magnitude quake hit 12km (seven miles) north-east of Kos, near the Turkish coast, with a depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey said.

At least 100 others were also injured at the popular tourist destination. Some buildings were damaged.

In the Turkish city of Bodrum, several people were injured as they tried to flee the quake.

The earthquake struck at 01:31 on Friday (22:31 GMT Thursday).

The two deceased have not been named but police said that one of the victims was Swedish and the other was Turkish.

They died after they were crushed by debris from either a collapsed wall or an old building, police said.

Mexico Earthquake, at 8.1 Magnitude, Is Felt for Hundreds of Miles
By ELISABETH MALKIN and AUSTIN RAMZYSEPT. 8, 2017

MEXICO CITY — A powerful earthquake struck off the Pacific Coast of Mexico late Thursday, shaking buildings as far away as Mexico City and sending worried residents fleeing into the streets. At least five deaths were reported in the immediate aftermath of the quake.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 8.1, according to the United States Geological Survey, and struck about 60 miles southwest of Pijijiapan, off the coast of Chiapas State, near the border with Guatemala.

The quake was felt in the capital, Mexico City, more than 450 miles from the epicenter.

Mexico City’s earthquake alarm sounded, sending people running into the streets, many of them in nightclothes, looking up nervously at shaking trees and swaying power lines.

Technically, according to the article, someone in Dallas reported feeling the quake. Which is not necessarily the same thing as "it was felt" in Dallas. Given the distances, I'd say that's a likely false positive.

I agree with Mike. I can see Mexico City jiggling from the shock wave. Mexico City is underlain by lacustrine deposits that shake like jello.

If that Dallas resident felt anything it was a tremor caused by deep well injection on the other side of the Red River at roughly the same time as the Chiapas earthquake.

Death toll still rising.

WaPo
At least 58 killed in massive earthquake off Mexico coast ...

By Friday afternoon, Mexican authorities had put the death toll at 58 people, including 45 in Oaxaca and 10 in Chiapas. Mexican media published photos and video of collapsed buildings and rubble in the streets. The Anel Hotel in Oaxaca collapsed, but authorities said that people inside managed to escape and that there were not believed to be any casualties.

One of the worst-hit towns appeared to be Juchitan, with 31 people reported dead, according to the Mexican daily El Universal. There was severe damage at the city hall, a market, a car dealership and a hospital. Residents put out pleas on social media for help recovering people from the wreckage.

Three people died in Tabasco state, including an infant who perished when hospital electricity failed and a ventilator shut off, authorities said.

This claims to be an image from Mexico City:

and with the strenght reported, not surpizingly the tremor was also registered on instruments in Switzerland.

RTH, it would only be surprising if a major earthquake wasn't registered on instruments. This USGS page says that an earthquake with a magnitude over 4.5 can be detected by instruments around the globe.
