Re: Earthquake! (or maybe Volcano!)
It was felt in Las Vegas as well. I was in my kitchen and the cupboard doors were rattling. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and survived the 1971 quake. It was terrifying. I was certain we were all going to die.Sterngard Friegen wrote: ↑Thu Jul 04, 2019 2:20 pmBig 6.4 in the Mojave Desert. I was out hiking and didn't feel it. I felt a 4.4 at 10:35.05. Also out in the desert, near Ridgecrest. It was felt all over SoCal. According to CalTech there have been numerous fore and after shocks in the Ridgecrest area.

Large earthquake strikes Southern California day after 6.4 temblor hit region, experts warn of more aftershocks

California on high alert after being rocked by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake
6.4 magnitude earthquake has California residents preparing for aftershocks.
A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck early Friday near the same region in Southern California where a significant tremor hit one day before, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Friday’s quake occurred at around 4:07 a.m. local time about 10 miles west of Searles Valley. On Thursday, the region was struck by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake which was felt across Kern, Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino Counties -- and even into Las Vegas.

We just had a big one with 35+ seconds of rolling and shaking. And a couple of smaller aftershocks.

Felt as far away as Phoenix per the announcers on the Dodgers vs. Padres TV broadcast. A 7.1 is very large. Anything over 7 would be very destructive to L.A. County if the epicenter was 25 miles from downtown L.A. There is probably a lot of damage in Ridgecrest.

Downgraded to 6.9 which is slightly larger than the Northridge earthquake in 1994 (6.7) which was very destructive because it was maybe 18 miles from downtown L.A.
Up in the mountains in Chatsworth a few miles from the epicenter of the Northridge quake there were places where the ground displaced several feet. I saw it when I rode horseback up there soon after the quake.

The baseball gods may have been upset, since the San Francisco Giants were playing the Oakland Athletics in a Bay World Series. That night's game was canceled. The destruction was massive, 60 people were killed and the S.F.-Oakland Bay Bridge was badly damaged. It took almost 5 years to get the bridge fully functional (through retrofitting and replacement).

I was about 6 miles as the crow flies from the epicenter of the Loma Prieta quake. I feel for the people near this one; it's terrifying.

A cat had just jumped onto the dining room table as it started. We thought Sabbath needed a crash diet until the chandelier started clinking and swaying.
It lasted for a long time but no damage here except the dish soap fell into the sink and drizzled down the drain and my new bottle of BOOM Nectar fell off the counter, smashed.
(Ladies. I highly recommend BOOM.)

Re: Earthquake! (or maybe Volcano!)
I was in a pickup rehearsal for my production of 12 Angry Jurors in Woodland Hills when last night’s quake hit. Juror 3 had just started his final monologue when the rolling started. As it went on, we briefly debated ducking under the sturdy jury table. I think we really felt it because we were all seated with our hands on the table.
Once things settled down we agreed that we should finish the play, for luck.
I think we were all glad the producer had decided a while ago that there should be no show due to the holiday. I’ve never experienced a strong earthquake during a show, and don’t really want to.

Re: Earthquake! (or maybe Volcano!)
I was living in Cotati, CA when the Loma Prieta quake hit. I felt it up there. Maybesaux (who, at the time, was merely Perhapssaux) was in Alameda that day, and I knew he would be returning home that evening via the lower deck of the 880 double-decker interstate in Oakland, which TOTALLY COLLAPSED like a stack of pancakes. Didn’t hear, didn’t hear, didn’t hear... phones were out... TV was out... only radio broadcast I could get was out of Rio Vista (pretty far distance, so very staticky). That’s where I heard about the 880, But they only said it once, and then I didn’t hear anymore about the 880 until much, much later..
Needless to say, I was freaking out. He finally showed up about three hours after the quake. Turned out he finished his business in Alameda early, then returned to work in Petaluma and was there when the quake hit. He couldn’t call because no phone lines, and couldn’t leave because the CO asked him to stay and assist in inspecting for damage (there wasn’t any).
Aside from worrying about my fella, two things scared me about that day, both from the TV news (after it finally came back on). The first was a video of this cop walking around in the Marina district with a bull horn. He was telling everybody that they needed to find a safe place to spend the night, because it was going to be dark soon, there were likely to be more aftershocks, and it was a very dangerous place to hang around. The people in the background were just walking around in a daze. It was so frightening.
The other thing was when they showed a video of what a typical night In San Francisco looks like from across the bay in Sausalito. Then they showed a video from the same place of what it looked like right then. It was total blackness except for a few fires here in there. It was so scary.

Re: Earthquake! (or maybe Volcano!)
Oh God I remember that all too well. I was here in LA, getting ready to watch the
World Series at work with co- workers. We had a tiny tv perched atop a cubicle so we could all see. We’re watching the anthem when the screen went black. We thought it was the tv of course.
Similarly, my bro, who was working for Arthur Anderson at the time and would have been on the Embarcadero at the moment it hit, had been sent to Stockton last minute to replace an ill auditor. We didn’t hear from him for hours.
I’m expecting the worst. Going through emergency kits replacing batteries etc this weekend.

NBC News: 4.5-magnitude earthquake hits near San Francisco Bay area
Some reported intense shaking in the quake, which struck northeast of San Francisco. There is no tsunami threat, officials said. ...
The temblor struck around 10:30 p.m. about 0.62 miles south-southeast of Pleasant Hill, a city of about 33,000 around 20 miles northeast of downtown San Francisco, according to the agency. It had a depth of around 9 miles.
An earthquake of that intensity is not an everyday occurrence but is fairly typical for the area and well within the seismic norm for the region, USGS geophysicist Amy Vaughan. ...
The sheriff in Contra Costa County, where Pleasant Hill is located, tweeted that there had been no calls of injuries reported to the sheriff's office.
