The over shots of the triage area looks like there are lots of people lined up and standing (like civilians, I hope so).

Everyone who's landed there knows the planes touch down on the runway less than a few hundred feet from the water and you are very close to the water before you see the runway. I wonder if it hit its tail before the gear touched the runway.I was watching the ABC live stream. Looked like a debris streak from the rip-rap along the water all the way along the run way.

I can almost see it from my deck. I can see Candlestick and part of the San Mateo Bridge. There is a hill in between here and the airport. There's no smoke coming up now. There are SOME survivors out of the 300 + on board. They are talking possible wind shear. Any pilot will take you it's something always to worry about.

Pilot error is the most common cause but a 777 10 years ago had a fuel line icing problem. It appears that the tail hit the riprap as it was landing, tumbling it. If the fuel lines were iced I suppose there is a possibility the pilots were unable to give it power just as it was landing.Where is GreatGrey? I'd like to hear from him. I am, after all, a lawyer, and generally have little useful knowledge.

Yes, esseff, CNN is showing a view now of the rock edge of the bay and the debris starts at the very edge of the runway. I think this was a pilot error. At least it was a clear day. The fog just lifted a short time ago. Visibility is quite good. Here's a link to the Ft. Funston weather cam and weather instruments. You can see the wind gusts and choppiness. That's not normal.[/break1]flyfunston.org/newwebcam/]http://www.flyfunston.org/newwebcam/ETA: We have two trauma centers near by....SF General and Stanford. This is when we need helipads at the hospitals. SF General has already closed part of the hospital to handle the expected casualties. They do train for this all the time.

CNN is saying that all 313 on board are accounted for and alive. If so that is wonderful and amazing.

It does NOT appear to be a fuel fire. There was no flaming debris strewn along the runway as it slid down the runway. There may have been a fire on board and the pilots were trying to get the plane on ground as fast as possible. The fire along the top of the cabin in front is very odd. It could be electrical and prior to the landing. We will probably be getting the air traffic communications recordings pretty soon.ETA correctionsThere were some unusual atmospheric conditions just at the time of landing. Looking at the graphs, there is an odd gap of calm in the midst of gustiness. Two deaths have been reported.

So weather patterns can be very different. (I live on the ocean side -- but work with a company with offices near the airport -- so it is very common for me to experience very different weather conditions between home & office)I'm just noting this for those who are unfamiliar with the area. Here's a web cam link from Foster City, looking at the bay -- this is much closer to the airport:[/break1]wunderground.com/webcams/tvnwun/3/show.html]http://www.wunderground.com/webcams/tvnwun/3/show.html(Foster city is directly south of SFO -- it is along the flight path where planes come in for landing -- the web cam doesn't really show much, however).

Riprap is what they use on hillsides to keep them from collapsing.

The other thing is that the airplane was too low coming in and fog was just clearing up. Big fast temp changes just at that time. Intense sun came out very fast after cool cool fog.He also came in too far to the right of the center line.

My cousin is the SFO airport commission secretary. So much for the rest of her weekend in Sonoma. Her family has rented the same house there for the month of July for the last 30 years.
Edit: That sounded cold, didn't it?
