Well, it's been 10 days since the North Shore was severely flooded and part of it cut off from the rest of the island and several other areas were also flooded. Volunteers are going door to door in the southern section of the island where flooding wiped out homes in little Koloa Town, parts of Kapaa, and Keapana which is a small farming community that apparently has lost all crops and many homes. Anahola, which is primarily Hawaiian Homelands, doesn't seem to have as much structural damage, but farms were destroyed. On Sunday several hundred people showed up to help clear the land.
Those areas are receiving much needed assistance from across Hawaii, but aren't mentioned much if at all in the national press. Just the North Shore and Hanalei in particular.
We still don't have a firm number on how many homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed. ONE person from FEMA has recently shown up to do an assessment. One.
No presidential proclamation yet.
I fill in on a disaster phone line when needed and have spoken to a number of West Coast politicians who called to express condolences and then start asking questions about FEMA's response. "Are you asking if we are the next Puerto Rico", I politely inquire. Brief silence. "Yes."

Press Release:
According to the National Weather Service, preliminary data indicates that the rainfall
during the flash flood event from April 14 to 15 broke the national record of the most rainfall
during a 24-hour period. Kaua‘i’s rain gauge located in Waipa recorded 49.69 inches of rain, and if
verified, it would break the current record of 43 inches of rain reported at Alvin, Texas, in 1979.

Re: Weather Alerts
So the disaster proclamation is withheld until FEMA can certify that damages reach a threshold number. That would be THE ONE FEMA guy assigned to two islands. The numbers are in, although not every home has been viewed. Estimate is about 600 residences are severely damaged and the damage exceeds $10 million. Really? The damage to the roads on just one island exceeds $30 million.
I was asked today about when FEMA assistance would arrive, and I said we had met the threshold for assistance. One person responded: "When will the president throw paper towels at us?"

Surfing is going to be good in California in a week or so!Scientists have documented what is believed to be the largest wave in the southern hemisphere off New Zealand coast Tuesday. The wave was 23.8 metres (78 foot), which is approximately the height of an eight-floor building. It wiped out the previous record of 22.3 meter set in south Tasmania in 2012.
The record was set during a powerful storm near Campbell Island in Southern Ocean, some 700 kilometers (430 miles) south of New Zealand. The wave was generated by a deep low-pressure system and wind speed exceeding 65 knots.
Senior oceanographer Tom Durrant said Southern Ocean is known for generating swell waves that move across the planet.

No rain in the forecast until a 20% chance on Monday. If you don't think it's been hot in Houston this year, you might change your mind this week.
Temperatures are expected to near or set record highs in Houston through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Wednesday and Thursday have temperatures forecast in the mid-90s, which are high numbers for this early in the year, meteorologists said.
The National Weather Service has urged people to be careful of heat illness and take precautions when going outside. Houston residents should take frequent breaks if working outdoors, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and drink a lot of water.

It is certainly a good thing that climate change has nothing to do with this. Just normal cycles.

"This is an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION," the NWS says. "These storms are producing widespread wind damage. SEEK SHELTER NOW inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows."
For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

Connecticut is getting hammered. There are several towns in west central CT that are completely without power. About 120,000 houses in the state, around 10% of the total, are without power. I am at work and haven't been outside, but heard from others who have reported back about their commutes home to those of us staying here to ride it out that there are trees down absolutely everywhere. One colleague said a tree across the street from her house came over and trapped a lady in her car just before she arrived at home.Volkonski wrote: ↑Tue May 15, 2018 6:13 pmhttps://patch.com/new-york/northfork/s/ ... aign=alertPenny-size hail and 60 mph wind gusts are possible, the National Weather Service says. To understand what is happening in the Northeast, it is helpful to recognize that there is no place known as Grand Central Station. There is a Grand Central Terminal, and that makes all the difference.
