Burke. A former bishop of a diocese I once belonged to. Shirley they jest! That guy would excommunicate someone for even uttering something like "priests should be allowed to marry." Yeah, a real Freethinker. He would chase 'em away in droves.

When Corriere della Sera, one of Italy’s leading daily newspapers, canvassed eight Vatican analysts and asked them to nominate their top three papal contenders at the weekend, Cardinal [Sean Patrick] O’Malley [archbishop of Boston] was by far the most popular choice.

He comfortably beat Odilo Pedro Scherer of Brazil and Angelo Scola of Italy, widely perceived to be two of the strongest candidates for the top job.If elected, "the Capuchin Cardinal" might take the name of Francis I, because the Capuchin Order is an offshoot of the Franciscans.

A big thing that apparently stands in his way is that he is from the "sole remaining superpower." RWNJ could disagree.

If an American pope proves too much to stomach, the chances of a Canadian pontiff may be a good deal stronger.

One of the most frequently mentioned “papabile” is Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Quebec, who ticks many of the boxes required of a future pope.

So I suppose I'd best post this, which some people think is finally THE SCANDAL that caused to pope to resign... curtsy of the British gutter press[/break1]independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/as-cardinals-gather-to-elect-pope-catholic-officials-break-into-a-sweat-over-news-that-priests-share-23m-building-with-huge-gay-sauna-8529670.html]http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 29670.htmlA day ahead of the papal conclave, faces at the scandal-struck Vatican were even redder than usual after it emerged that the Holy See had purchased a €23 million (£21 million) share of a Rome apartment block that houses Europe’s biggest gay sauna. The senior Vatican figure sweating the most due to the unlikely proximity of the gay Europa Multiclub is probably Cardinal Ivan Dias, the head of the Congregation for Evangelisation of Peoples, who is due to participate in tomorrow’s election at the Sistine Chapel. This 76-year-old “prince of the church” enjoys a 12-room apartment on the first-floor of the imposing palazzo, at 2 Via Carducci, just yards from the ground floor entrance to the steamy flesh pot. There are 18 other Vatican apartments in the block, many of which house priests....Readers on Italian gay websites were quick to make jokes at the cardinals’ expense. One on the Gay.it site quipped: “’Oops, I took the wrong door, I thought it was the chapel.'…If you can’t go to the gay sauna for fear of being seen what do you do if you have millions of Euros stolen from Italians? You buy the apartment block with the sauna inside.”Aside from everything else wrong with this article, a moments thought reveals that if THERE WAS this secret Gay cabal controlling everything and who Pope Benedict fled in fear from, this place is the LAST place that the Vatican Bank would have bought a share in, as the Gays would have known about it and would have warned them off. As it is, it's fairly obvious that they didn't have a clue. And they are far from the first bank to buy into an embarrassing property deal.Anyway, the conclave starts tomorrow. Soon Stern will be right again.

Although by far the majority of your letters on the subject of Cardinal O'Brien have condemned him and his cover-up, some accused us of being one-sided in our coverage; even of an anti-Catholic agenda.Let's be clear: that's nonsense. It is not anti-Catholic to report the revelations about the Cardinal's secret sex life, follow up with his cryptic denials and then print his too-little too-late admission that his sexual conduct had "fallen beneath the standards expected of me". It is not anti-Catholic to reveal that O'Brien, by his own admission "as a priest, archbishop and cardinal" had indulged in the same homosexual activity against which he had long railed from a privileged position of power.People hear what they want to. On the news I watched a woman interviewed outside her church, insisting that somehow there would be a good explanation for it all. Well, just as with the cover-ups of the many paedophile priest scandals, the Magdalene Laundries shame or the cynical admission of married CofE vicars into the Catholic priesthood while continuing to deny Catholic priests the same right, there is no "good" explanation, just hypocrisy and cover-up.I'm personally very aware of the good the Church does at its best. For those of the faith who believe in and practise this "good", there is an unambiguous, absolute need for the Church to reform itself and reappraise its attitudes to sex – including allowing priests to marry – and homosexuality. Why can the Church not see it? Stop the cover-ups, investigate fully, punish the wrongdoers and do it all in public.(added the quote)

It's certainly much closer to something I'd expect to see in the NY Post than in the Times or The Guardian. The article does its best to confuse issues rather than report them. In its attempt to make mock, the article seems to go out of its way to imply as strong a connection between the bathhouse and the Vatican. So much so, in fact, that its being reported elsewhere that the Vatican "owns" the building. On closer examination, it seems that the Vatican actually bought, at strangely inflated prices, a number of apartments in the building. The Independant reported this as the Vatican purchasing "a share" of the building. I suppose that might be a technically correct description, but it doesn't seem to be a totally honest one. "Share" implies a certain element of control. Yet I've seen nothing that indicates that the Vatican has any control over any part of the building except the individual apartments they own.

Calling THE INDEPENDENT "gutter press" shows your extreme bias, Suranis.Have a read of the article and then tell me that's not the definition of gutter press. I only quoted the more acceptable part of it. The rest of it implies that the Cardinal was a frequent visitor at the sauna, as were the Priests living in the apartment block amongst other shitty implications. And of course that the Pope resigned and the Church was reeling rather than yawning at the allegations of a gay cabal in the press. The Independent is generally pretty good but that article would not look out of place in the Sun.The only consolation is that coverage like that might make right thinking people start thinking about why normally pretty good newspapers turn into gibbering tabloids at the mere mention of the Catholic Church.
