I thought when he took this gig he understood it was for life.Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday he would resign Feb. 28, the first pontiff to do so in nearly 600 years. The decision sets the stage for a conclave to elect a new pope before the end of March. The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII, who stepped down in 1415 in a deal to end the Great Western Schism among competing papal claimants.[/break1]ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_VATICAN_POPE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2013-02-11-06-24-15]http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/ ... 1-06-24-15

Given lack of any real precedent (and since Pope Gregory XII stepped down as part of a deal anyway that hardly was precedent), what role, if any, will Benedict have in the Conclave? Is he still technically a Cardinal? Does he get to sit it? Does he get to run the Conclave? Or does the Conclave wait until March 1 since he is still Pope through the 28th?Curiously submitted,MetoDC

I remember Greg's resignation. It was big news, too. He appointed lots of Cardinals (including many relatives) after he promised he wouldn't. He was actually deposed and resigned to confirm his loss of power.

And all of his appointments were allowed to stand under the de facto officer priest doctrine.

From Politico

Text of pope announcing he will resign Feb. 28

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday he would resign Feb. 28 because he is simply too old to carry on. Here is the text of his announcement, delivered to cardinals gathered for a ceremony to name three new saints.

"Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer."

There's no reason why a Pope can't resign; recently it's been the norm for them to die in office but old white guys do die from time to time. Stern excepted, of course. If the next Pope is called Peter, chooses Peter as his regnal name, or has a connection with Rome then the conspiracy nuts will go orgasmic. [/break1]wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_PopesPaddy Power (a popular betting website here) is offering odds on who will be elected Pope next; front runners are Cardinal Marc Ouellet (Canada) 5/2Cardinal Francis Arinze (Nigeria) 3/1Cardinal Peter Turkson (Ghana) 4/1Cardinal Leonardo Sandri (Argentina) 5/1Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi (Italy) 6/1Archbishop Angelo Scola (Venice) 7/1Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga (Honduras) 10/1 A black pope would be an interesting choice, but I hope they won't choose Peter Turkson who is rabidly anti-Muslim and will therefore not do much to promote peace and tolerance.

My bet is on Angelo Cardinal Scola. And that he will choose to be known as Pius XIII.
