Islamic state claims Las Vegas shooting, says attacker recently convert to Islam

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a shooting that killed at least 50 people and wounded over 400 in Las Vegas early on Monday, and said the attacker had converted to Islam a few months ago.

“The Las Vegas attack was carried out by a soldier of the Islamic State and he carried it out in response to calls to target states of the coalition,” the group’s news agency Amaq said in reference to the U.S.-led coalition fighting the group in the Middle East.

“The Las Vegas attacker converted to Islam a few months ago,” Amaq added.

He converted to Islam while living in Mesquite, Nevada where there are only about 9 Muslims total? I have my doubts. In that photo he appears to be drinking alcohol and his lady friend is reported to be a casino worker.

Stephen Paddock's brother Bruce Paddock, who lives in California, said his family grew up in Sun Valley, California.

Bruce, who said he hadn't talked to Stephen in approximately 10 years, said his brother made money through apartment buildings, which he owned and managed with his mother, who lives in Florida.

"I don't know how he could stoop to this low point, hurting someone else," Bruce said.

He added that his brother was a laid-back, "never-in-a-hurry" type of guy. Bruce said his brother was a law-abiding citizen who never did anything violent prior to the shooting.
Looks like he does own that apartment complex in Mesquite, TX.

There is a Mesquite Central Park Apartments Gp 2, LLC at the same address owned by Peggy R. Paddock who might be his mother.

Shooter Spent 'Tens of Thousands of Dollars' Gambling in Recent Weeks

https://www.nbcnews.com/card/suspect-st ... ry-n806651
Suspect Stephen Paddock spent "tens of thousands of dollars" gambling in Las Vegas casinos in recent weeks, law enforcement officials tell NBC News. It’s unclear if he was winning or losing money off these large transactions, or if the gambling had any connection to the shooting.

One of the suspect's brothers, Eric Paddock, told NBC News earlier today that the suspect regularly spent time gambling and visiting the casinos in Las Vegas, some 80 miles away from Mesquite, Nevada, where the 64-year-old suspect was retired.

Paddock is married and the father of four children. They live at 1122 Camino Mira Flores, Tucson, and Paddock runs the Arizona Disposer Co., 1021 E. Sixth St., there. Careful checking of car registrations led the lawmen to Tucson. There, they learned that Paddock was in Las Vegas. VERNON BAILEY, assistant FBI chief for Arizona, pointed out it was the joint effort of the FBI, Phoenix police, and the Pima County sheriff's office that resulted in the arrest. Two agents spotted Paddock outside his car at a Las Vegas gas station yesterday morning. When they identified themselves, Paddock jumped into the car and tried to run down one of them. Paddock stopped when the other agent fired through the windshield. Inside the car agents reported finding a loaded revolver, a blackjack and approximately $3,000.
Apparently his fathers story

Lines to donate blood at Las Vegas clinics were already out the door just hours after the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history took place in the city.

Las Vegas residents were pictured waiting outside clinics to give blood before sunrise as hospitals treat the more than 400 injured in the mass shooting that left at least 50 dead.

Local reporters shared photos of people waiting overnight to give blood to treat shooting victims.

1) It’s a fucking casino, of course he’s concerned!
2) He’ll waste no time politicizing it
3) Anyone in that crowd who had a gun and used it would only have contributed to the body count. Seems the guy moved all around the 32nd floor balcony. The security guard from the footage looked as confused and shaken as everyone else.

Agreed. (However, no balcony on the 32nd floor. He broke a window with a hammer, per the press conference.)

In a crowd of 22,000, 1 in 40 people were injured or killed.

How many is it going to take?

Until the NRA membership take the organization back from the manufacturer's lobby, the body count will not have any impact on policy. It could be 1 in 1 and not make a difference.

We will probably never see meaningful legislation as long as it is 'gun owners vs non-gun owners' (at least in perception). Gun owners need to take back their own lobbying group and join with non-owning reformists. Not going to happen, but that is probably what it would take.

Seems to have been quite well off owning multiple homes and two planes. Not political, not religious. Had required government-issued licenses for his activities so not a sovcit.

Las Vegas gunman liked to gamble, listened to country music, lived quiet retired life before massacre

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nati ... story.html
For several years, the gunman lived with his girlfriend, Marilou Danley, in a retirement community in Reno, Nevada, neighbors said. They said they interacted with Danley but not Paddock, whom they described as extremely standoffish. Danley told residents there that Paddock was a professional gambler, explaining their long absences from the neighborhood.

:snippity:

Paddock's family said there was nothing in his past that would suggest violence. Family members said that Paddock spent much of his retirement in recent years staying in hotels in Las Vegas and gambling. They said he listened to country music and went to concerts at Vegas hotels, similar to the one Sunday night where he opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers.

Public records show Paddock was a licensed pilot who owned two planes. And he had a hunting license from Alaska.

:snippity:

Property records show he had homes in both Mesquite, Texas, and Mesquite in Nevada. He bought his current home in Mesquite, Nevada, in 2013, and appears to have been living there ever since.

Yep. Click.

After I switched off I went to my fence-sitting weather-vane-imitating congresswoman's fb page to fight the good fight. So far I've battled "Guns don't kill people" etc. (Think I'll abbreviate it GDKPPD from now on), "Automatic weapons have been illegal since...." and "It's too soon..." My personal favorite was a reply to one of my impassiong #complicit rants that read "#righttobeararms" I replied "#wellregulated". I'm not that clever but I am persistant.

Great twitter reply to the Gov of Kentucky who moaned that you can't stop evil: "That's literally why we have laws, you moron."

Now I have to fucking take a break and go and donate some dollars to Puerto Rico recovery efforts, which I've been too distracted to do.

So did the Mandalay Bay staff help this murderer bring all 10 weapons to his room? Did no one at the hotel notice something was amiss?
I was wondering that as well. I am not gun savvy, but I'd guess you can't carry multiple weapons up in one trip.
A man pulling a hard-sided traveling case for golf clubs would not only hold those guns, but would have wheels making it easy for one person to roll it right through the lobby to the elevator, and would have drawn no attention at all in Las Vegas.

The first reports about the horrific attack in Las Vegas on Sunday night will surely evolve into more detailed knowledge. But there are three lessons we might draw from the information already available. First, automatic rifles like the one the shooter apparently used have the potential to kill large numbers of people, particularly when aimed at a crowd in a confined space. Second, a shooter positioned in a high-rise building hundreds of meters away can render moot many of the security measures now used to protect crowds. And third, despite what gun advocates tend to say in response to shootings, it’s incredibly unlikely that any armed bystander could have made a difference, given the distance, elevation, and darkness that separated this shooter from his victims. These three facts made the Las Vegas shooting a nightmare scenario for police agencies, and for the rest of us too.

:snippity:
A third lesson: It would have been incredibly difficult for any bystander, or even local law enforcement personnel on the ground, to return fire and stop Paddock during his attack. Infantry units are trained to react to snipers by taking cover, obscuring themselves with smoke grenades, and returning fire, often with heavy machine guns, shoulder-fired rockets, or sniper rifles of their own. So are police SWAT teams, although the latter try to use less force and to be more precise in their return fire.

A concertgoer carrying a pistol would have been vastly outranged by Paddock; pistols can barely reach targets 50 meters away. It would have taken a concertgoer carrying a rifle, ideally with a scope and large magazine of ammunition, to respond. And even then, it would have taken the discipline and skill of a Navy SEAL to effectively shoot back at Paddock while under fire, and hit him, while not killing scores more in the Mandalay Bay hotel and turning the scene into a firefight. An armed hotel guest would have fared no better, as it took heavily armed and armored Las Vegas police, guided by the smoke detector in Paddock’s room, to find Paddock in the massive hotel. Contrary to what the NRA may say about shooting violence, a good guy with a gun would have made no difference in Las Vegas.

DOTUS's idiot speaker speaks idiocy, from Talking Points Memo:
Matt Shuham at Talking Points Memo wrote: White House: ‘Premature’ To Talk Gun Control In Wake Of Las Vegas Shooting

"Has this particular massacre made the President think anything more about pursuing tighter gun laws such as background checks to prevent a massacre like this from happening again?" Reuters' Jeff Mason asked Sanders at a press briefing Monday.

Sanders said that "there’s a time and place for a political debate, but now is the time to unite as a country."

"There’s currently an open and ongoing law enforcement investigation,” she said. “A motive is yet to be determined, and it would be premature for us to discuss policy when we don’t fully know all of the facts or what took place last night."
Seems to me that NOW is exactly the time when there should be a very short debate followed by effective action. Regardless of what was wrong inside the shooter's head, the fact that he had such appalling weaponry is what made this atrocity possible. Had he been armed only with a knife, he couldn't have one per cent of the same harm.

As I recall (maydijo will know better), Australia moved to tighten its gun laws quite rapidly following some tragedies, and didn't pay homage to the gun nuts when it did so. I think the UK effectively banned hand guns completely following an atrocity there.

So many lives ruined, just because infantile violent nutters love and worship their destructive and pointless toys.
