I'm thrilled authorities were able to stop all these maniacs. So why don't I feel any safer?

Clark Atlanta tightens security after 4 students shot at block party

Officials at Clark Atlanta University on Thursday said the school is ramping up security efforts, effective immediately, after four women were shot at a block party in front of the Atlanta University Center library.

The university’s public safety employees will start working 12-hour shifts to “enable us to provide 24-hour coverage on campus,” Interim President Lucille H. Maugé said in a message to students Thursday.

“We have heard you and we will move forward to address your concerns and improve the safety and well-being of all CAU students,” she said.

The police department is moving away from its typical eight-hour shifts “until further notice,” Clark Atlanta police Chief Debra A. Williams said. The department adjusts its manpower accordingly in response to all major incidents for more visibility on campus, she said.

A bit more about Mr. Dragan who was extracted from his house by SWAT. Apparently he was pulled over for speeding on the I-294. Police ran his name and arrested him on an outstanding warrant. He resisted. The story on WGN gives details.

Did state police follow protocol in arrest of Wheeling man who later shot trooper?
David Bradford is a retired downstate police chief and executive director of Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety. He said traffic stops are one of the most potentially dangerous situations for law enforcement.

“The standard procedure would be if you're taking a person into custody, you would handcuff that person, perform a pat-down, or what's called a 'terry search,' before putting them into a secure, confined environment,” he said.

But according to court documents, that did not happen when Dragan was initially arrested.

The trooper escorted Dragan to the back of his squad car, then got in front.

According to court records, at that time Dragan said he “couldn't go to jail” and pulled a gun from his waistband, cocked it and demanded to be let out of the squad car.
More as they say at the link. They say the shots fired came after the battering ram was used, but the earlier reports say before.

Cross posted from another thread:

I just took my mother down to the great room at her apartment complex for the morning coffee get together. One of her neighbors was there wearing a memorial t-shirt in honor of his brother who was killed in the El Paso Walmart. We hugged and I told him how sorry I was. All the while the gigantic flat screen TV is screaming Fox News. I said to my mother and Ed, another resident, that they should turn off Fox in respect. Ed and Mom both agreed that it is the only real news. I left. Mom can scoot back in her wheelchair or Ed can push her.

Video shows mom react to son's arrest for online shooting threat: 'He's just a little boy'
"How do we know he’s not going to be the kid from Parkland?" an officer said to the mother as he arrested her 15-year-old son.

By Ben Kesslen

Amid a wave of arrests for threats of mass shootings, police in Florida released footage showing one mother’s reaction to her teenage son's being taken into custody.

The 15-year-old boy was arrested at his home Friday in Volusia County after allegedly writing online in a video game chat room, "I Dalton Barnhart vow to bring my fathers m15 to school and kill 7 people at a minimum," according to the county sheriff’s office, which posted a body-camera video of the arrest to its Facebook page on Monday.

The boy, who attends high school in Daytona Beach, was using a fake name in the threat and insisted to police that it was a joke.

“Jokes or not, these types of comments are felonies under law,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.

The boy's mother appears stunned and upset in the video, telling police, “But he’s just a little kid playing a video game.”

She also says her son’s threatening words online are normal behavior for young people playing video games.

“He’s just a little boy; he didn’t do anything wrong,” the mother says, crying. “He’s not one of the crazy people out there doing stuff, he shouldn't be treated like he is a terrorist.”

An officer at one point responds by referring to previous school shootings.

“How do we know he’s not going to be the kid from Parkland?" the officer says. "He’s not going to be the kid who shot up Sandy Hook? We don’t know that.”

“We can’t take risks,” another officer at the scene of the arrest says. “We can’t say, ‘Alright, we trust this guy isn’t going to do it’ and it happens and then we say, ‘Well, we had the chance to stop it.’”

When an officer asks the mother if she has a gun at home and she says yes, the officer says of her son, “He has hands and feet. He could grab your gun and do something.” the officer said.

The boy is seen in the video admitting to writing the threat, with officers saying he is under arrest for making a threat to cause a mass shooting or an act of terrorism.

I’m disgusted by that mother’s reaction. And it’s ridiculous to say a 15 yo is “just a little kid.”

Be fair: the article does say the mother appeared stunned and upset so that's quite a natural reaction of a mother in a stressful situation trying to protect her child while dealing with unexpected news and attempting to explain it. It's not necessarily the opinion she will have when the dust has settled.

Teenage boys are programmed to be jerks (not all, but many). Saying stupid things is normal at that age. Unfortunately in this connected age those stupid things are heard by many, and (as the cop explained) with the easy availability of firearms nobody can predict whether it's an ordinary boy being ordinarily jerkish or the prelude to the next school yard massacre.

It's tough now for kids at the be-a-jerk age because there can be much worse repercussions for misjudgements or overexcitement than there were in simpler, quieter times, and kids have to learn that lesson and be better at self-censoring those urges.

I believe what I said was perfectly fair. I'm a mother who raised two teenage boys, now in their thirties. I would never have called them "little kids." I would have been as alarmed as law enforcement if either of them had said they were going to take an automatic or semi-automatic weapon to school and shoot people. I would have advocated for my kid. But I would hot have made excuses.

'Just a little kid' who will be driving a vehicle within a year if he doesn't already have a learner's permit. 'Just a little kid' who will be a legal voter in three years, who can marry, who can be in the military.

“Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best
Excitable boy, they all said
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

He took little Suzie to the Junior Prom
Excitable boy, they all said
And he raped her and killed her, then he took her home
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

After ten long years they let him out of the home
Excitable boy, they all said
And he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy”

Um, no. Stunned and upset and "he's just a little kid" excuses are not the same thing. If the cops show up at my door to arrest my son, my natural reaction is not to make excuses and try to talk them out of it, it's to find out wth is going on and fix it. Threatening to kill people at school is something that needs to be fixed in HIM, not in the justice system.

As for kids being jerks and saying stupid shit, shooting up school threats is a fairly recent phenomenon and if they are so "connected" through their devices, then they know the cops are coming to call if they make those types of comments.

Ordinary boys being jerks don't make specific, graphic threats about shooting people. That's sort of the definition of not-ordinary.

MEMO: BLAME THE LEFT, MINIMIZE WHITE SUPREMACY ROLE
BY MATT KEELEY ON 8/16/19 AT 6:55 PM EDT

A recently leaked memo from House Republicans shows that the GOP is urging its politicians to blame recent mass shootings on the left, while downplaying the role of white supremacy.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, who obtained the memo, the document offers talking points in response to common questions Republican representatives may face after the recent mass shootings.

The paper describes most of the offered responses as "boilerplate Republican arguments against tougher gun restrictions." However, the Times spotlights the answer the memo suggests in response to the question "Do you believe white nationalism is driving more mass shootings recently?"

"White nationalism and racism are pure evil and cannot be tolerated in any form," the document said. "We also can't excuse violence from the left such as the El Paso shooter, the recent Colorado shooters, the Congressional baseball shooter, Congresswoman Giffords' shooter and Antifa."

Disgruntled cook with high-powered guns threatened mass shooting at Long Beach hotel, police say

By ALEX WIGGLESWORTHSTAFF WRITER
AUG. 21, 2019 5:46 PM

Police in Long Beach thwarted a possible mass shooting this week when they arrested a disgruntled hotel cook they said had threatened to carry out violence at his workplace.

Rodolfo Montoya, 37, who worked at the Long Beach Marriott, was taken into custody Tuesday at his home in Huntington Beach. Officers seized multiple high-powered firearms, including an assault rifle, 38 high-capacity magazines, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, according to investigators.

Police said Montoya told a coworker Monday that he planned to come into work and shoot everybody he saw at the hotel. Montoya was angry about a human resources issue, according to investigators.

The coworker notified the hotel’s management team, who contacted police. Officers located Montoya and took him into custody the following day.

“I believe the Police Department has worked to avert what could have been a real tragedy in this community,” Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia said Wednesday at a news conference announcing the arrest.

Investigators said the specificity of the plan that Montoya described to his coworker as well as his access to firearms were sources of particular concern.

One of my nephews sent a bomb threat to his school when he was fourteen. When he was taken in for questioning afterward, he blamed it on a classmate, claiming the other kid had taken his laptop and sent the email.
His mom believed him. Bad school! Bad school, for expelling her son because of a stupid bomb threat!

The victims in the shooting in Mobile ranged in age from 15 to 18, police said. They were at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Friday night for the game between Leflore and Williamson high schools when shots rang out, Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste told reporters.
