Hostage situation/standoff on U of Minn campus

#1

We all got two emergency phone calls before 6 am this morning, alerting us to an incident on the East Bank of the Minneapolis campus. There's a hotel there, and we were told the Rec Center and a nearby parking ramp was closed. Other than that, no big! Carry on! Don't worry!

Turns out there's a guy with a warrant for his arrest staying at the hotel. The cops tried to pick him up, and he's barricaded inside his room holding a hostage. This while the Philly Eagles' convoy rolled past with a massive police escort, en route to the nearby Gophers training facility.

SWAT team and about thirty squad cars at the hotel. Cops are using the Rec Center as their base. Snipers in position. Facilities staff had to sneak onto the floor the guy is holed up on overnight and physically remove light bulbs from fixtures that couldn't be switched off...apparently to help the snipers who were moving into position.

But still - no big! Carry on! Classes as usual, no campus closure, no evacuation. The street was closed to cars, but buses and light rail kept running. Very low key local news coverage.

I'm betting they'll make their move any time now, since classes are over and traffic is light. I'm sure the chief of police is catching seven kinds of hell from the Mayor and SuperBowl committee about his officers serving a warrant so near the Big Event, on a (reportedly) white collar criminal. The last thing we need is for SuperBowl attendees to be worried about potential gunmen in the hotels.

Update, report from police clips site: About 5pm CST a big truck from the state patrol pulled up at the hotel with a big squad of troops in full body armor with shields and battering rams and automatic weapons.

The U says the Rec Center will be back open tomorrow morning so yes, they'll make their move tonight.

According to the StarTribune, a woman has been released and police are negotiating with the suspect. There is no one else in the hotel room.

But who is it that is holed up? Have they released any information on him at all? This is a weird one.

And where exactly is it taking place? Is it on the UofM campus itself

According to local media, this suspect is a guy from Arizona with a warrant out for some kind of white collar crime. So you'd think they could've watched and waited till the SB is over or he checked out to pick him up. Other reports say the cops showed up to do a welfare check, so...maybe his captive called for help?

Twin Cities U of M campus is in three distinct locations: farm campus in Falcon Height (St Paul Suburb), East Bank in Mpls on East Bank of Mississippi, West Bank in Mpls on other side of river. The East Bank is the center spot. There's a hotel on that campus, currently called The Graduate hotel (formerly a Radisson hotel). That's on the main drag, not far from the U's athletic facilities that will be used by the Eagles, and on the light rail line to the stadium. Thus, the hotel is solidly booked for the big weekend. Awkward!

Luckily, this incident doesn't affect me. I'm within walking distance of the stadium, though, and have been fretting about a potential Las Vegas situation. Wall to wall cops, though, including plainclothes, tactical gear, snipers, even hovering helicopters with radiation detectors watching for potential dirty bomb attempts. I suspect parking and traffic issues will be the biggest things for me to contend with.

It's so terrible that you have to be wary of snipers, dirty bombs, etc. in a great place like the Twin Cities. I've been there many times for meetings. Everybody I've ever run into there, and I do mean everybody, is unfailingly pleasant and helpful. I'm severely dyslexic and someone once walked me to my meeting via the skyway system, even though he was headed in the opposite direction and was going to be late for work. I could never, ever have negotiated that skyway system on my own. And the cities are beautiful, too. (Well, in the summer, anyway.)

Thanks for all the info and take care!

On little information, this strikes me as LE over-reaction. Perhaps preparation for Super Bowl explains it. I hope no one’s life is disrupted by this.

Since this white-collar crime guy may be armed and took a hostage in a hotel near a big event, there may be more to this than is obvious. (or not)

They're trying to have it both ways: a big enough deal to bring in the shock troops/gear, and yet so utterly insignificant that we're told we can go about our business as usual, nothing to worry about. They evacuated part, but not all, of the hotel. They're allowing people to continue to patronize the dining and drinking establishments within the hotel while cops in full tactical gear are patrolling the premises.

Latest: At about 11:30 am CST, the dude threw a microwave oven out of his sixth-floor window. The cops promptly fired gas canisters and (possibly) flash-bangs into the room.

Now: he's hanging outside the window, holding a phone.

ETA: they've apparently been firing a steady barrage of gas and flash-bangs over the past hour or so. They just now fired a flash grenade that went off right next to the guy.

Clearly, everyone's getting tired of waiting.

It's over. Suspect taken into custody. And he called me AGAIN right before his arrest. He said the cops just want to kill him, didn't know what to do, and didn't want his kids to seem him like this. Wow. Wild morning.

Rookie error. Should've waved a Skousen constitution pamphlet at them, they would have shaken him warmly by the hand and let him keep the hotel.
