That's pretty much what the river stream creek brook has looked like below my drawbridge during our heavy rains down here. (It had been dry most of the year for the last 7 years.) Still running. A little. I love to watch running water.

Except my river stream creek brook doesn't make me sneeze.

Have you a portcullis as well?

But no damsels in distress in the high tower.

The modern, well-appointed stronghold will always include a drawbridge, portcullis and turrets. However, since the unionization of damsels in distress (DID United), many stronghold owners have abandoned that tradition and it is considered acceptable to merely play, on a continuous loop, the screams of Nell Fenwick issuing from one's highest tower, 24/7.

Thanks so much for continuing to post updates, RTH10260. Real life + 45s daily crap diverted me from this a month or so ago so I'm grateful this was here to catch me up on what was going on. I loved the old PR/documentary on building Oroville (the hopper cars that empty without having to be decoupled  :-D were awesome) & an especial thank you for finding the pilot who has been reporting on this. His videos are great!

ETA - I seem to have accidentally unthreadjacked the threadjack!

I found an interview with Juan Browne, the gentleman who makes the videos RTH is kind enough to share here. I didn't know he's an airline pilot.

Another update from a couple of days ago. Our friend visited the official press conference where the authorities revealed their intentions how to fix the spillway.

An independant engineers analysis of the spillway failure:

Report finds serious design, construction and maintenance defects at Oroville Dam emergency spillway
APRIL 17, 2017

An analysis by a retired UC Berkeley civil engineering professor found that design shortcomings, construction flaws and maintenance errors caused the Oroville Dam emergency in February. It is the first major assessment of what caused the massive damage that forced the evacuation of nearby Oroville and left the state with a repair bill likely to reach into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

With the Katrina levee failures, Taum Sauk Reservoir failure, and this as just a few examples, it seems like civil engineers were doing a lot of shabby work on big projects in the 1960's and 1970's.

Just did see this while reviewing my own post: the LA Times makes the same error as many less professional outlets on the web make, eg the evacuation was not due to the spillway failure in first place. The evacuation was ordered by the local sheriff cause there was some concern over the behaviour of the Emergency Spillway (now renamed as Auxiliary Spillway). The soil below the Emergency Spillway did erode massively during its first ever usage, and there were concerns that this may lead to a failure of the crown of the dam there, with water flowing out uncontrollably. In place it was decided to use the Main Spillway at capacity even though it detoriated and finally evaporated to a large extent. While inflowing water into the lake was massive, in the end the event was controlled thru the means of the Main Spillway as designed.
