Re: and now, the LW militias...
Lots of events could produce a socially dangerous situation, not just an arguably unlikely monetary collapse... a Coronal Mass Ejection that fries everything electrical. A devastating multi-state hurricaine and flood. Terrorists smuggle a nuke into NYC or DC. A Tunguska-type event over Newark. Biological attack with a virus designed at the RCMG (formerly the Institute of Experimental Biology) in Moscow. These are not totally far-fetched, and we live among people who in a pinch might well consider us and our families (and our bunnies) expendable.
The bitterest truth is healthier than the sweetest lie.

Their appearing on the steps of the Capitol is what led to the only gun-control legislation the NRA ever supported: The Mulford Act which took away the right to open carry in California: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulford_ActGrumpy Old Guy wrote:It reminds me of the Black Panthers in California who established armed patrols in Oakland who followed police cars around to ensure black people were not being abused. They took advantage of California law that permitted open carry of rifles.

Oakland patrols of police
The initial tactic of the party utilized contemporary open-carry gun laws to protect Party members when policing the police. This act was done in order to record incidents of police brutality by distantly following police cars around neighborhoods.[44] When confronted by a police officer, Party members cited laws proving they have done nothing wrong and threatened to take to court any officer that violated their constitutional rights.[45] Between the end of 1966 to the start of 1967, the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense's armed police patrols in Oakland black communities attracted a small handful of members.[46] Numbers grew slightly starting in February 1967, when the party provided an armed escort at the San Francisco airport for Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X's widow and keynote speaker for a conference held in his honor.[47]
The inspiration came from this short book, Negroes with Guns. The author describes armed confrontations with racists including racist police.

Not sure about the NRA support part, but the exact same thing happened in Missouri when the Black Panthers marched with shotguns down Franklin Ave (now Martin Luther King Blvd).Flatpointhigh wrote:Their appearing on the steps of the Capitol is what led to the only gun-control legislation the NRA ever supported: The Mulford Act which took away the right to open carry in California: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulford_ActGrumpy Old Guy wrote:It reminds me of the Black Panthers in California who established armed patrols in Oakland who followed police cars around to ensure black people were not being abused. I'm with RS on this, based on the rhetoric I've heard, although I also think the armed RWNJs are armed because deep at heart they are total pussies, not bravehearts, and would drop their arms and run if they ever actually met a bunch of liberals with guns. The liberals I know who grew up farm kids or rural all know how to shoot.
My sister was raped many years ago in a long, lonely road in Washington state, by a soldier. The base commander dismissed her accusation, even though she had a vivid description of the guy and could have picked him out of a lineup. She has carried a gun ever since. You don't want to meet her on a long, lonely road.

Firearms safety class last night.
Not impressed with the Glock 17.
12 people, only two of which were men. Four of the women had never fired before, and said they wanted to learn "recently, after the election"
One woman in an "infowars.com" shirt who kept arguing with the instructors. If it hadn't been a firearms venue, I'd almost wish I had worn my Eye in Pyramid pendant, just to play with her mind.

People without a large amount of firearms training and experience who for some reason feel the need to carry a hand gun should get a revolver.PatGund wrote:Firearms safety class last night.

There's a writeup by Stephen Lemons at : http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/news/lem ... on-9192965 and a video atChilidog wrote:

They come over as an embarrassing little clique of amateurs, whining about their personal space and privacy rights as they parade in armed ranks. They make inept threats and harass Lemons with a total lack of authentic menace. And then they run away.
Absolutely pathetic - the real left-wing fighting heroes of the International Brigades are rolling in their graves, and the militia/RWNJ's are completely reassured that this is no counter-threat. Honestly, they would have served the cause better by staying at home. They humiliated themselves.
Stephen Lemons was repaying the disrespect and probably provoking things as time went on, but he's been a fierce advocate for liberal, anti-Sheriff Joe stories for a long time. I don't believe that he caused their unwarranted-entitlement attitude, but he seemed to enjoy mocking it.

I don't understand the love of the high-powered long guns. No subtlety. I'll stick with my cute little Colt .38 Detective Special.

The diehard open carry folks will strap on a gun to go shopping at the mall. Personally, I've always thought that open carry just makes you the first target of a bad guy. I've always thought it smarter to carry a concealed weapon if you feel the need.

They are incredibly unsafe for the task of them are being sold for (home self-defense). They cut through interior walls like butter and the way houses are made today, exterior walls too, making them dangerous to the other people in your house and your neighbors (and downright insane in an apartment building). They can go through cheaply made exterior wall then go for miles and miles and still kill someone. They are complicated to use and more complicated to keep clean so they don't jam when you actually need them. They are made for what the military does and a civilian should never do, effectively kill people hundreds of yards away.
Shotgun for the house (with Number 4 buckshot for the house to balance non-wall penetrating safety and ability to stop someone edit: or reduced power low recoil 00 buckshot made for the police) and your Colt .38 if you actually need to carry a gun are the non-stupid choices.
Re: and now, the LW militias...
The most famous face of the diehard carry permit crowd in Minnesota died a few years ago. He had a notorious run-in with LE after he attempted to carry inside the county government center, which is explicitly signed as 'no guns'.MN-Skeptic wrote:The diehard open carry folks will strap on a gun to go shopping at the mall. As a guns/threats extremist, he believed those signs were unconstitutional, threats were everywhere, and his right to bear arms trumped everyone else's rights. That included the right of private property owners to not allow guns on their premises. His refusal to respect the property rights of others (and ordinary social niceties related to same) shortly made him persona non grata with most of his acquaintances, after he was caught carrying inside their homes and refused to take his gun off their property when asked.
Yeah, he was a kook. An authoritarian kook.
I've heard this bull before.

Shot both, and rather prefer a semi-automatic. Revolvers are nice though.Dan1100 wrote:People without a large amount of firearms training and experience who for some reason feel the need to carry a hand gun should get a revolver.

Semi-automatics are less dependable, easier to shoot yourself or someone else by accident, more complicated to operate, and more complicated to clean (and therefore even less dependable).PatGund wrote:Shot both, and rather prefer a semi-automatic. Re: and now, the LW militias...
Revolvers are like an automatic transmission; automatics are like a stick shift. If you don't use one all the time so it becomes rote, you could make a mistake in a panic situation.
With speed-loaders a revolver can be darn effective IMHO. But we've got a couple of both.

I sometimes think I'd like the peace of mind of having a handgun for emergencies, burglars in the night, next-door's cat etc. But then I remember that if the law permitted me to walk around with a pistol, another 50 million people would also have that right. And knowing how we Brits behave when drunk*, that's a scary thought....!

There's always the good old Louisville Slugger... - and other non lethal means. Not as sexy as whipping out the gat, but can get the job done (some items may need more training that just a batter's cage).

And try hitting a tin can from 100 yards? Terrible.
