I've become increasingly intrigued with flatearthers, and until I watched the documentary "Behind the Curve," this amounted to quietly scoffing at the various flat earth "facts" and "theories" that I happened across, marveling at the failure of our educational system, noodling about what all such conspiracy nonsense says about civilization generally, and comforting myself with the belief that at least half of flatearthdom is probably people like my stepson, who delights in trolling people by pretending to believe weird shit.

However, the documentary makes an interesting case that the best and most productive tack to take on this issue is to invite oneself into dialogue with believers. It gives a hint on some ways to do that. And by dramatizing some of the "scientific" experiments flatearthers have undertaken, suggests that there is at least a fringe of the fringe who are amenable to empirical proof.

So now, in idle moments, I'm assembling a list of actual experimental exercises that an average person can do, designed not particularly to prove or debunk a flat earth or a globe, but rather to do what the ancients did, and what Renaissance scientists did: try to understand the nature of our physical reality, given that our personal footprint and vantage point is so very tiny and limited.

Before I share what I have already put together, does anyone have any references for similar work? I'm thinking of the equivalent of a 5th grade physics/cosmology packet, with study questions, simple tools, experimental procedures, etc. Stuff people can actually DO, to maybe get them thinking, how would you go about answering the questions, how far away is the moon? How far away is the sun? What is the diameter of the earth? Why are there seasons? What is above the sky? How do you measure distances? When is it proper or not proper to base your thinking on someone else's reported conclusions?

Even a Kid Can Prove the Earth Is Round: Here's How

https://www.space.com/38931-kids-can-pr ... round.html
One of the best documented methods for determining the Earth's roundness was first performed (to our knowledge) by the ancient Greeks. This was achieved by comparing the shadows of sticks in different locations. When the sun was directly overhead in one place, the stick there cast no shadow. At the same time in a city around 500 miles north, the stick there did cast a shadow.

If the Earth were flat then both sticks should show the same shadow (or lack of) because they would be positioned at the same angle towards the sun. The ancient Greeks found the shadows were different because the Earth was curved and so the sticks were at different angles. They then used the difference in these angles to calculate the circumference of the Earth. They managed to get it to within 10% of the true value – not bad for around 250 B.C.

10 easy ways you can tell for yourself that the Earth is not flat

https://www.popsci.com/10-ways-you-can- ... h-is-round
2. Ships and the horizon
If you’ve been next to a port lately, or just strolled down a beach and stared off vacantly into the horizon, you might have noticed a very interesting phenomenon: Approaching ships do not just “appear” out of the horizon (like they should have if the world was flat), but rather seem to emerge from beneath the sea.

3. Varying star constellations
This observation was originally made by Aristotle (384-322 BCE), who declared the Earth was round judging from the different constellations one sees while moving away from the equator.

5. Seeing farther from higher

8. The existence of time zones
The time in New York, at the moment these words are written, is 12:00pm. The sun is in the middle of the sky (though it’s hard to see with the current cloud coverage). In Beijing, it’s 12:00am, midnight, and the sun is nowhere to be found. In Adelaide, Australia, it is 1:30am. More than 13 hours ahead. There, the sunset is long gone—so much so, that the sun will soon rise up again at the beginning of a new day.

The calculations were done by Eratosthenes. He was undeniably brilliant. The Wikipedia article summarizes his calculation of the Earth's circumference:

The two sticks experiment relies absolutely on the assumption that the sun's rays at the two locations are parallel. How is that validated?

Indeed, on a flat earth, this experiment could be used to calculate the distance of the sun from the earth! Or to calculate the divergence of the local gravity vectors, depending on one's flat earth model. Or perhaps to calculate the curvature of the sun's rays on their transit as they are pulled (or pushed) by earth's gravity

Proposing this experiment as proof of a spherical earth is bad physics.

Well, the maths of the Greek experiment show that either the suns rays are effectively vertical because the Sun is very far away and bloody huge, or there is a tiny sun about 1000 miles above the flat earth's surface. The maths come out the same.

Physics and science do not use the same faulty reasoning as theology. Assumptions and conclusions are very different things in science. The two sticks experiment is a neat way of estimating the diameter of an earth assumed to be spherical, but it does not in itself prove the earth's sphericity

What a surprise.
Fundamentalist Christian and self-proclaimed founder of the “Biblical Flat Earth Society,” Phillip Stephen Stallings, was arrested this week and charged with 56 counts of child sexual exploitation, as reported by local news station WTDV.

The 40-year-old Durham, North Carolina resident is facing dozens of charges for sexually exploiting minors for allegedly downloading media that involved minors engaged in sexual situations and sharing this illegal media on social platforms.

He was arrested on Wednesday morning at his home by Durham County deputies as a part of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigation, according to WRAL.com.

“It’s part of an investigation across the nation right now for possession of child pornography and creation of child pornography,” said Durham County Assistant District Attorney Kendra Montgomery-Blinn during a short court hearing on Thursday morning. “They had information that Mr. Stallings was sharing his materials on a social media platform.”

Stallings faces 28 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and 28 counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor after being caught with child pornography. He has also been served with a warrant related to both cyberstalking and financial card theft. :snippity:

So our world is on one face of the disk and there's another world on the other face thatcwe haven't seen yet? If we dig, dig, dig we might be able to reach our brothers and sisters on the other side. And then we'll discover that we both believe our homes are on the Biblical side and the other side is Satanic.

This platygeomorphology is complex!

Then, in the spirit of Flat Earthism and its balloonery, we need more research into the precise nature of the turtle that does not exist. What does the non-existent turtle eat? How old is the non-existent turtle? What is the non-existent turtle's name? Can the non-existent turtle dance on the head of a pin? Does the non-existent turtle have free will or is it constrained by the will of a greater non-existent creator turtle?

Do we have any masters of platygeotheological apologetics who can answer these vital questions?
