Mattis expected to back allowing transgender troops to stay in the military
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is expected to propose to President Trump that transgender members of the U.S. military be allowed to continue serving despite the president’s call last summer for a ban on all transgender service members, according to two U.S. officials with knowledge of the issue.

The defense secretary was scheduled to brief the president Wednesday, but the meeting was postponed and will occur soon, officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss policy deliberations. Dana White, a spokeswoman for Mattis, said the secretary will provide his recommendation to Trump this week and the president will make an announcement at some point afterward.

Officials at the White House and Pentagon declined to comment on the recommendations until Mattis delivers his plan.

WKYT: Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis releases new book titled 'Under God's Authority':
Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has released her new book about her effort to 'defend marriage and religious freedom.'

Davis became a subject of a global controversy when she spent five days in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2015.

She has now released a book titled "Under God’s Authority: The Kim Davis Story."

The $25 book promises a behind-the-scenes look at the Davis' experience when she refused to issue licenses citing her religious beliefs.

Former Arkansas governor and Davis supporter Mike Huckabee wrote the forward for the book. Huckabee was with Davis the day she was released from jail.

The Liberty Counsel, a religious civil liberties advocacy organization, is selling the book on its website.
Liberty Counsel is, of course, is also her legal representative.

In addition to Davis, there are two "co-authors."

How dare those gay men want their Constitutional rights respected! How dare they express anger when basic civil rights are being disregarded, illegally, by a woman who thinks she has more authority than the Supreme Court!

Considering that a multitude of clergy and congregations are willing to perform and sanctify same-sex marriages, I am not sure how Kim Davis's refusal to enable those ceremonies (by withholding marriage licenses) defended religious freedom. Seems more like denying the religious freedom of churches other than hers.

The day has not yet arrived when requests for same-sex weddings is the worst problem the Commonwealth of Kentucky has to worry about.

Forti: "religious freedom" in right-wing nutter speak does not have the same meaning as in the civilized world. To you "religious freedom" probably means something like the freedom of each and every person to follow their own religion without interference from government, provided they do not adversely affect others.

To RWNJs, it's almost the exact opposite: their "religious freedom" is their unique right to impose their hate and prejudices on others, without hindrance or criticism, overriding statutory and constitutional protections for anybody else.

Kim Davis stood for hate and prejudice against a minority group; of course she's a saint to the RWNJs!

And Christians love a chunk of persecution in their myth-making: six days in the pokey for breaking the law: oh, so, so awful!

There aren't any photos of her on the cover or inside or anything, are there? I might be otherwise tempted, but photos of that lady ... no. That's a deal-breaker. :nope: :cantlook: :talktothehand:

Much of the 'religious freedom' argument boils down to various christian sects wanting to use governmental power to settle their inter-denominational disputes and elevate their particular brand to the canonical one.

RWW: [Ky.] Gov. Matt Bevin Says Kim Davis Is An Inspiration To ‘The Children Of America’:
Yesterday, Liberty Counsel released a video promotion for [Kim Davis'] book narrated by founder and chairman Mat Staver that featured not only Davis but Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, who heaped praise on Davis for “her boldness [and] her conviction” in “knowing that she was right.”

* * *

After Davis asserted that what happened to her was all part of a divine plan to “shake God’s people up” in preparation for the day when they too will inevitably have to stand in the face of relentless persecution, the video closes with a reworked version of Martin Niemöller’s famous “First They Came For The Socialists…” anti-Nazi poem:
First the came for the county clerk, but I did not speak out because I do not do marriage licenses.

Then they came for the wedding photographer, but I did not speak out because I did not photograph weddings.

Then they came for the baker, but I did not speak out because I was not a baker.

Then they came for the florist, but I said nothing because I was not a florist.

Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.

TL;DR

If only the Framers of our Constitution and Bill of Rights had thought to prohibit that sort of thing.

California courts get involved all the time. Most of the disputes involve which group or faction owns a church or other real property.

Sadly, all the groups that were weak enough at the time to beg for protection are now either gone or strong enough that they do not want others protected from them.

Vatican
MALE ESCORT EXPOSES 36 GAY PRIESTS IN FILE SENT TO VATICAN CONTAINING EXPLICIT WHATSAPP CHATS AND EROTIC PHOTOS
BY CHRISTINA ZHAO ON 3/5/18 AT 6:16 AM

A 1,200-page dossier containing the names of 34 "actively gay" priests and six seminarians in Italy has been sent to the Vatican by the archdiocese of Naples.

The allegations were compiled by Francesco Mangiacapra, a gay male escort who told local media he couldn’t put up with the priests’ "hypocrisy" any longer.

"The aim is not to hurt the people mentioned, but to help them understand that their double life, however seemingly convenient, is not useful to them or to all the people for whom they should be a guide and an example to follow," Mangiacapra said, as reported by the Corriere della Sera.

The archdiocese of Naples says he has sent the Vatican a 1,200-page dossier identifying 40 actively homosexual priests and seminarians in Italy.

Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, an Italian Cardinal and the current Archbishop of Naples, said in a statement that none of the priests who were named in the dossier were stationed in Naples. He claims he forwarded the document to the Vatican because “there remains the gravity of the cases for which those who have erred must pay the price, and be helped to repent for the harm done."

The large file contains explicit WhatsApp messages, erotic photos and other evidence, but none of the 40 priests and seminarians were accused of paedophilia or having sexual relations with minors. "We're talking about sins, not crimes," Mangiacapra said.

The dossier is the latest in a string of sex scandals that have rocked the Italian church and Vatican.

In other fun election news, happy that it looks like my friend Dean Trantalis is going to win the runoff and be Fort Lauderdale, Florida's first openly gay mayor!

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - Fort Lauderdale residents are getting ready to voice their choice and elect the city’s new mayor.

Two city commissioners are currently taking each other head-on in a fight to be the city’s leader.

Dean Trantalis is a lawyer hoping to become the first openly gay mayor of Fort Lauderdale, and he’s facing off against the city’s former police chief and current Vice Mayor Bruce Roberts.

Sun Sentinel endorsed him back in January.
Dean Trantalis best choice for Fort Lauderdale mayor | Editorial

Like his opponents, Trantalis, 64, a real estate attorney, is smart and personable. He’s also accessible, responsive and committed to smart growth. And he’s self-aware — the only candidate at the South Florida Sun Sentinel debate willing to acknowledge a mistake or regret.

Trantalis also has a sense of humor. When asked at the debate about an attack ad from a PAC supporting Bruce Roberts — an ad some viewed as homophobic because it depicted Trantalis, a gay man, wearing lipstick and rouge — he began: “Aside from the fact that these are outfits I would never be seen in …”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Voters in Fort Lauderdale elected a new mayor Tuesday.

Dean Trantalis defeated Bruce Roberts in a runoff election to replace longtime Mayor Jack Seiler.

With all but one precinct reporting, Trantalis received more than 5,600 votes than Roberts.

Trantalis, who's openly gay, casts himself as a change agent. He's been serving as a city commissioner since 2009 and is a longtime champion of equal rights.

Roberts, a former Fort Lauderdale police chief, is the current vice mayor. He was first elected commissioner in 2009 but is facing term limits.

Democratic gubernatorial candidates Gwen Graham and Philip Levine took to Twitter to congratulate Trantalis, as did U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida.

Congrats to Dean!! :happyfamily:  He almost lapped his opponent.

Quoted in the story, Trentalis calls himself a “change agent”. The alt-right, including Trump and his Bannon, consider themselves “disrupters”, a much less positive term for the same damn thing.

Smh. How can anyone...?
