Ash Carter and I once talked a bit about AI systems in the service of "Star Wars." He was not a strong believer. In fact, he told me to draw my gun if somebody says AI seriously. He may well have changed his mind since.

There is a great scifi story about AI's. I forget the author.

Humans built AI systems to manage our most mission-critical infrastructure (defense, electric power, etc.). Then we built them for systems of lesser importance, such as driving automobiles and flying airplanes. These systems were slightly larger than the earlier one. Then they decided to entrust our educational systems to AI. Still larger systems.

This process continued until the AI systems were as large as the planet despite Intel's best efforts. SO we constructed an AI system in space. Worked well, although it was vulnerable to space trash. So we figured out how to create virtual AI systems.

Then somebody noted that the newest systems had the capacity to incorporate all human minds, without the bother of sickness, death, etc. So people slowly discarded their bodies and went into an AI system.

The AI systems now had less to do and were vastly more powerful than their creator systems. So they decided to merge, observing that the heat death of the universe was approaching. The virtual AI survived that event.

The human minds were changed but still there. After several billion years they realized that they were lonely.

So the AI said "Let there be light."

In this story, two computer operators are screwing around after bringing a computer on-line and ask it "what do we do after the universe runs out of energy?"

Thanks. Asimov was unparalleled, although given his quantity and rate of publications I do agree with those who said that he was actually a four-part clone of the original.

Somebody (could it have been Ted Sturgeon?) was quoted as having said about Asimov, "It's not fair... He writes faster than I can read!"

Asimov also gave us the all-powerful Mayor. And it' a short leap from the all-powerful Mayor to the all-powerful Sheriff.

And this....
The Pentagon reportedly issued new guidance on Friday allowing transgender troops currently serving in the military to re-enlist in the coming months as the department weighs how to enforce President Trump's broader ban on their service.

An algorithm deduced the sexuality of people on a dating site with up to 91% accuracy, raising tricky ethical questions

Artificial intelligence can accurately guess whether people are gay or straight based on photos of their faces, according to new research suggesting that machines can have significantly better “gaydar” than humans.

The study from Stanford University – which found that a computer algorithm could correctly distinguish between gay and straight men 81% of the time, and 74% for women – has raised questions about the biological origins of sexual orientation, the ethics of facial-detection technology and the potential for this kind of software to violate people’s privacy or be abused for anti-LGBT purposes.

I wish people would stop referring to crap like this as "AI". An algorithm, not matter how sophisticated does not constitute AI.

Put simply, AI does not exist, and probably never will. As a computer science discipline, AI has over promised and under delivered for over 60 years. The problems are intractable.

So say that AI to date has been a complete and utter failure would be an understatement.

CNS: Same-Sex Couples Can Seek Damages Against Kentucky Clerk:
Two lawsuits against Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis – who infamously refused to marry same-sex couples after the historic U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage – will proceed, but only against Davis in her individual capacity, a federal judge ruled.

In a pair of 21-page rulings issued Friday, U.S. District Court Judge David L. Bunning disagreed with Davis’ assertion that her policy created a “mere inconvenience” to gay couples – whom she said could have traveled to another county to obtain licenses – and refused to dismiss personal-capacity claims against her.

Although Judge Bunning dismissed the constitutional claims against Davis in her official capacity as Rowan County clerk, citing the “insurmountable hurdle” of sovereign immunity, the couples will be allowed to seek damages against Davis as an individual after Bunning denied her motion for qualified immunity.

In his opinion, the judge cited the 2014 Supreme Court case Zablocki v. Redhail, which determined a Wisconsin statute that required noncustodial parents to obtain a court order before they could get married was unconstitutional.

Davis argued that, despite the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision in Obergefell legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, the couples’ right to marry was not clearly established when she denied them marriage licenses.

Judge Bunning disagreed.

“Obergefell answered one question – whether the fundamental right to marry extended to same-sex couples. The answer was yes, and that clearly established plaintiffs’ constitutional rights,” he wrote.

The judge concluded that “defendant had fair warning on July 6, 2015 – when she denied plaintiffs’ request for a marriage license – that her conduct was unconstitutional.”

Kim Davis won't pay a penny out of her own pocket. The haters will finance her. And celebrate her. History will not treat her as kindly.
