Trump says he wants military to guard U.S.-Mexico border until wall is built

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he wants the military to deploy troops along the U.S.-Mexico border to protect the nation until a wall is built at the southern border.

"We are going to be guarding our border with our military. That's a big step,” Trump said during a session at the White House with the leaders of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. "We cannot have people flowing into our country illegally, disappearing and, by the way, never showing up for court."

A senior official at the Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday that putting troops on the U.S.-Mexico border had been under discussion but that no roll-out had been planned because of unresolved policy issues. The official said Secretary of Defense James Mattis did not want armed troops at the border.

Spokespeople for the Pentagon and Mattis did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

If you don't want any military personnel along the border, they could of course lay out mine fields. A bit messy when they get washed away in stormy conditions especially when they end up on Mexican territory.

Since being an undocumented immigrant is essentially a civil misdemeanor, would this violate posse comitus?

You just attach the troops to the Texas National Guard instead of doing it the other way around. I’m amazed that someone didn’t dream this up at Dennys.

I'd say that's the big question. Unfortunately, we know it will be bad.

They’re already fighting about Zinke’s plan to take federal land away from CA’s purview and mine and frack the hell out of it. Also, too, they want to strip us of the right to require more stringent emission laws than the fed.

I predict an ICE v. Military war. ICE is not going to want Mattis having any control over its playground.

My WAG is that is exactly why the DHS and DoD are being so coy.

Don't forget: Fitzpatrick "indicted" Obama because a local commander briefly deployed forces to restore order in a nearby town.

This is another case where taking a deep breath and waiting to hear the details might be called for. Both W and Obama deployed National Guard troops to help secure the Mexican border, in addition to some states (Texas) independently deciding to use non-federalized Guard at/near the border.

Helicopter an Aircfaft Carrier over and drop it in the middle of the Border. Easy.

Have helicopters scoop up plastic trash from the Great Pacific Ocean Plastic Trash Eddy and dump it on the border.

The Hill
GOP rep: I'm not comfortable with Trump sending troops to southern border

A GOP lawmaker on Tuesday voiced disapproval with President Trump’s vow to send troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to prevent illegal crossings.

“I don’t really feel really comfortable with deploying military troops and creating the possibility for an increase in violence and an escalation of the conflict,” Rep. Francis Rooney (R-Fla.) said on CNN.

Instead, Rooney said, "These people should be stopped at the border and vetted out, just the normal process, and we should have plenty of agents down there to do that." He voiced concerns that deploying troops would escalate tensions “unnecessarily.”

“I would rather have the dealings with immigration be handled in a civil context and not a military one,” he said.

This totally disregards the fact that there aren't many people crossing the Mexican border these days. Most of the illegal immigration is from people who come in on visas and overstay. I guess he'll need to put up walls and send in the troops to all the international airports, too. :brickwallsmall:

Will they be sent to shoot people or just strong-arm them back across the border?
