Trump administration preparing to shelter migrant children on military bases

The Trump administration is making preparations to warehouse migrant children on military bases, according to Defense Department communications, the latest sign the government is moving forward with plans to split up families who cross the border illegally.

According to an email notification sent to Pentagon staffers, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will make site visits at four military installations in Texas and Arkansas during the next two weeks to evaluate their suitability for child shelters.

The bases would be used to hold minors under age 18 who arrive at the border without an adult relative or after the government has separated them from their parents. HHS is the government agency responsible for providing minors with foster care until another adult relative can assume custody. ...

An official at HHS confirmed the military site visits. Speaking on condition of anonymity because the plans are not yet public, the official said HHS currently has the bed space to hold 10,571 children in its network of 100 foster-care facilities.

Those facilities are at 91 percent capacity, the HHS official said, and the Trump administration’s crackdown plans could push thousands more children into government care. The official said DHS has not provided projections for how many additional children to expect.

Gee — a growing opioid crisis, beds at 91% capacity, social services and non-deployment resource cuts, and now thousands of non-English-speaking children separated from their parents and put into military bases. What could go wrong?

I don’t think this administration has correctly identified who the non-human animals are. :madguy:

The Trump administration is looking to build tent cities at military posts around Texas to shelter the increasing number of unaccompanied migrant children being held in detention.

The Department of Health and Human Services will visit Fort Bliss, a sprawling Army base near El Paso in the coming weeks to look at a parcel of land where the administration is considering building a tent city to hold between 1,000 and 5,000 children, according to U.S. officials and other sources familiar with the plans.

HHS officials confirmed that they’re looking at the Fort Bliss site along with Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene and Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo for potential use as temporary shelters.

The aggressive plan comes at the same time that child shelters are filling up with more children who have been separated from their parents. The number of migrant children held in U.S. government custody without their parents has increased more than 20 percent as Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen rolled out the administration's new policy zero tolerance policy that separates children from their parents who now face prosecution.

Maybe I am missing something (not a surprise), but why don't these children fall under the jurisdiction of the state juvenile courts.

Aren't the states, not the federal government, in loco parentis (edit: wrong latin meant Parens patriae ) for children whose parents are federal prisoners?

Shouldn't they be going into state licensed foster care or state licensed group homes?

My guess: the parents and their kids have not received resident status, so they are in limbo under the "care" of the Border Patrol.

Undocumented immigrant says feds took daughter during breastfeeding

An undocumented immigrant from Honduras said that federal officials separated her from her daughter while she was breastfeeding her child in a detention center, an attorney told CNN.

Natalia Cornelio, an attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project who interviewed the immigrant, told the network that the woman was handcuffed when she resisted the authorities.

The woman was being held in a detention center when the incident took place, after she was apprehended for entering the country illegally. Cornelio said the woman sobbed while recounting the incident.

The Trump administration implemented a “zero tolerance” policy earlier this year for those caught illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

All people apprehended entering the country illegally are subject to prosecution under the policy. Adults and children are prosecuted separately, leading to their separation. < snip>
