North Korea’s latest missile launch appears to put U.S. capital in range

TOKYO — North Korea launched what appears to be another intercontinental ballistic missile, the Pentagon said Tuesday, with experts calculating that the U.S. capital is now technically within Kim Jong Un’s reach.

The launch, the first in more than two months, is a sign that the North Korean leader is pressing ahead with his nation’s stated goal of being able to strike the United States’ mainland and is not caving in to the Trump administration’s warnings. The missile logged a longer flight time than any of its predecessors.

“We will take care of it,” President Trump told reporters at the White House after the launch. He called it a “situation we will handle.”

Trump has repeatedly said that military options are on the table for dealing with North Korea, suggesting that time has run out for a diplomatic solution to the nuclear problem.

A growing chorus of voices in Washington is calling for serious consideration of military action against North Korea, although this is strongly opposed by South Korea, where the Seoul metropolitan region — home to 25 million people — is within the range of North Korean artillery.

Hawaii now has an air raid siren. Actually, it's not new, just resurrected. It was last heard during WWII.

Yesterday (or the day before) there was a news item from Japan that they picked up wireless activity and expected something like this.

Also too, N.K. released news reports that they will have reached "nuclear capability" in the next few weeks. To note that having some kind of untested war head upon a little tested rocket does not yes make a nuclear super power.

No, and Kim just said he could now destroy "the whole United States."

Quick test, Kim: Which is more likely?

1) DPRK has enough firepower to destroy America before she can react, or
2) America has enough to wipe the DPRK completely off the map?

I see 2a) America has enough to wipe DPRK completely off the map but millions in Japan, N & S Korea die horrific deaths.

CTV News
Canada, U.S. to co-host meeting on North Korea crisis

WASHINGTON - Canada will assist the United States in co-hosting a major international meeting on North Korea in an attempt to find a non-military solution to a nuclear crisis, which escalated Tuesday with a record-setting missile test by the rogue state.

They will convene foreign ministers from the countries involved in the Korean War and from important regional actors like Japan in a meeting whose date has not been set but which will likely occur in Canada early next year.

The conference had been under discussion for weeks between Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and her U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and they chose to announce it late Tuesday after North Korea carried out its longest-ever missile test.

A meeting of this magnitude "hasn't been done before," one Canadian official said.

Even the ability to deliver a single successful strike completely changes the equation though. Nuclear powers don't fight each other. It would still leave DPRK vulnerable to some kind of proxy war, but even that gets less and less likely.

The "whole of the US" with a single device? N.K. has not yet demonstrated their ability to control multiple (long range intercontinental) rockets at one time.

The US may need to demonstrate, against its intent to hide its real capabilities, an intercept of a N.K. rocket in the near future to dampen Kims behaviour.

Lindsey Graham: The U.S. Could Soon Be at War With North Korea

http://time.com/5040681/north-korea-lindsey-graham/
The U.S. could soon be at war with North Korea, warned Sen. Lindsey Graham on Tuesday, as concerns rise that the reclusive nation has developed an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the U.S. carrying a nuclear warhead.

The Pentagon confirmed that North Korea had launched its third ICBM of 2017 on Tuesday, which traveled about 1000 kilometers before splashing down in the Sea of Japan.

“If we have to go to war to stop this, we will,” Graham told CNN in an interview on Tuesday, after the launch. “If there’s a war with North Korea it will be because North Korea brought it on itself, and we’re headed to a war if things don’t change,” he said.

Graham has supported interventionist foreign policy during his career.

This is the kind of thing that bothers me. And everyone knows that the country will rally around a president during war time. I have no doubt this deplorable dotard will get us into a war, it's just a matter of when.

In the case of N.K. I guess that the real generals (not "his" generals) will not willfully jump into a war with a lots of US fatalities to recon with, and they will neither want to take the responsability for huge casualities in S.Korea and China. I somehow doubt that the Trumpies in the WH have directed the T.Rex and his State Department to arrange for an accord with China in case of an actual military standoff with N.K.

Earthquake near nuke site rocks North Korea
NORTH Korea has been rocked by a 2.5 magnitude earthquake near the communist country's Punggye-Ri nuclear test site.

By Anders Anglesey / Published 2nd December 2017

The tremors were detected in Kilju, in North Hamgteong Province, about 1.8 miles away from the infamous laboratory.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said the tremors could have been caused by a previous nuke test.

A spokesman added: “Kilju is a rocky area where natural earthquakes normally do not occur.

“However, the quake could have been caused by geological changes created from the recent nuclear explosion.”

An Airline Crew Says They Saw North Korea’s Latest Missile Fall From the Sky

By Tara John 8:13 AM EST

Crew members aboard a 15-hour flight were startled last week when they saw what is believed to be the re-entry of a North Korean missile into earth’s atmosphere.

The crew witnessed the missile fall out of the sky as the Cathay Pacific flight— from San Francisco to Hong Kong— flew over Japan. The company said they witnessed “a sighting of what is suspected to be the re-entry of the recent DPRK [North Korea] test missile,” the Guardian reports.

The company said they witnessed “a sighting of what is suspected to be the re-entry of the recent DPRK [North Korea] test missile,” the Guardian reports.

Flight trackers place the plane close to Japan around the time of North Korea’s Hwasong-15 missile test on Nov. 29. The missile, which Pyongyang claims to be its “most powerful,” crashed into the Sea of Japan.

A couple of articles in reference to the health of the soldier that fled N.K. ten days ago, and that shed a dire light on the health of the army personnel and the public in general in N.K.. Seems that while N.K. has some deadly conventional fire power ready north of the demarcation zone, soldiers may not be in really top fighting condition. Likely some special forces excluded.

What we’ve learned about the North Korean soldier whose daring escape was caught on video
By Marwa Eltagouri November 24
:snippity:
He has had three surgeries, including an attempt to repair his damaged internal organs and stop the contamination caused by 10-inch-long parasitic worms found in his intestines.

The worms indicated the severity of the humanitarian and health crisis sweeping North Korea as it pours its resources into becoming a nuclear power. With the country spending about 22 percent of its gross domestic product on the military, other public spending necessities have taken a hit. As a Newsweek headline bluntly put it: “North Korea’s Kim Jong Un is starving his people to pay for nuclear weapons.”

Lee said he had never seen such an extreme case of parasitic infection. The soldier had worms not seen in South Korea since the 1970s, but they appeared to be somewhat common north of the border. In a 2014 study, South Korean doctors sampled 17 females who escaped North Korea and found that seven of them were infected with parasitic worms, according to the BBC. They also had higher rates of diseases such as hepatitis B and tuberculosis.

What was just as curious were the raw corn kernels found in Oh's stomach, which shocked many South Koreas. North Korean soldiers typically have a higher ranking on the food-rationing list, so it was alarming that the soldier had been eating uncooked corn.

Some reports claim that North Korean soldiers have been ordered to steal corn from farmers to fend off hunger.

Lee told Reuters that it took medical staff days to remove the shards of at least four bullets from Oh's body and to surgically repair his organs. They also treated Oh for hepatitis B and tuberculosis.

Hungry North Korean soldiers 'ordered to steal corn because war is imminent'

Underfed North Korean troops are being encouraged to fend for themselves

Nicola Smith 31 AUGUST 2017 • 11:20AM

As North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un boasts of his military prowess and flaunts his high tech weapons to the world, his malnourished soldiers are said to be stealing corn from fields to stave off hunger pangs.

Officers are ordering their troops to supplement their meagre food rations by plundering local fields, in order to keep up their strength for battle, according to a report in the Daily NK.

“The military officers are instructing their soldiers, exhausted after training, to eat corn in the fields because war is imminent,” a source in North Hamgyong Province told the news website.

China's Air Force said Monday that a surveillance aircraft had been conducting drills in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea to 'improve combat-readiness and safeguard the country's strategic interests'.

The surveillance flight would have taken place as U.S. fighter jets arrived in South Korea ahead of the annual joint drill which started yesterday.

North Korea declares new UN sanctions are an 'act of war'
Pyongyang threatens countries will pay a ‘heavy price’ for backing resolution to ban 90% of petroleum exports
The latest United Nations sanctions against North Korea are an act of war and tantamount to a complete economic blockade, the country’s foreign ministry said on Sunday, threatening to punish those who supported the measure.

The UN security council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Friday for its recent intercontinental ballistic missile test, seeking to limit its access to refined petroleum products and crude oil, and its earnings from workers abroad.

The UN resolution seeks to ban nearly 90% of refined petroleum exports to North Korea by capping them at 500,000 barrels a year and, in a last-minute change, demands the repatriation of North Koreans working abroad within 24 months, instead of 12 months as first proposed.

The United States-drafted resolution also caps crude oil supplies to North Korea at 4m barrels a year and commits the council to further reductions if it were to conduct another nuclear test or launch another ICBM.

Kim Jong-un warns United States: 'I have a nuclear button on my desk'

Kim Jong-un used a New Year's Day speech to warn the United States that he was now able to hit all of the US mainland with his country's nuclear weapons.

He said North Korea would spend 2018 mass producing nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles, and that the US would never be able to start a war against them.

"The entire United States is within range of our nuclear weapons, and a nuclear button is always on my desk," he said during the televised address.

"This is reality, not a threat."

But Kim also called for reduced military tensions on the Korean peninsula in what appeared to be an olive branch to South Korea.

North Korea accidentally hit one of its own cities with a missile, says report
A complex of industrial or agricultural buildings is thought to have been destroyed

Samuel Osborne 4 days ago

A North Korean missile reportedly crashed into one of its own cities after it failed just minutes following its launch.

US officials said the Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) was initially thought to have disintegrated mid-flight after it was fired on 28 April last year.

However, new data suggests it landed in the city of Tokchon, around 90 miles north of the secretive communist country’s capital, Pyongyang. Tokchon has a population of around 200,000.

The missile likely exploded on impact, causing significant damage to a complex of industrial or agricultural buildings, The Diplomat magazine reported, citing a US intelligence source alongside satellite imagery.

After its launch from the Pukchang airfield, the missile flew approximately 24 miles to the north-east, the report stated, adding that it flew no higher than around 43 miles.

A US government source said the missile’s first stage engines failed around a minute after it was launched.

I'm a little surprised to read that at the FP site.

From what I recently picked up (sorry, didn't keep the link) the US military has a special cruise missile in development (at Boeing?) that will deliver a targeted EMP by non-nuclear means. With this device they could take out the nuclear development facilities, and if known where staitioned, the new fancy ICBM with little collateral damage. I understand that this device is still in beta stage but development has been accelerated for obvious reasons. I guess if sufficient of these devices were available, and under the assumption that not much of the N.Korean military hardware has been hardened against a NEMP, that a conventional war could be largely suppressed due to havoc on command-and-control. Wishful thinking maybe?
