Lebanon is a dangerous city. My god mother was married to a Lebanese pilot who flew for Pan Am. At some point he got religion and left her to go home. It was a terrible time. He tried (but failed) to take the children with him. My mom's best friend lost her husband to a sniper in Beirut.Go, Americans, flee! I know you think you're safe but...

Israel says it stopped al-Qaeda attack on U.S. Embassy

JERUSALEM – Israel's internal security agency said Wednesday it arrested three Palestinians for allegedly planning to blow up the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, the Jerusalem International Convention Center and other targets.

The Shin Bet intelligence agency said the three men, two from Jerusalem and one from the West Bank, were recruited by a Gaza-based operator working on behalf of al-Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahiri.

Aviv Oreg, an Israeli expert on al-Qaeda and Global Jihad, called the thwarted attack "very serious."

"It appears that this is the first time since 2001, when the so-called Shoe Bomber came to Israel to conduct reconnaissance for a possible attack, that hard-core al-Qaeda elements are involved within Israel."

The security agency said one of the arrested recruits revealed that he was in the initial stages of planning twin terror attacks at the embassy and convention center, where U.S. President Obama spoke during his March 2013 visit to Israel.h/t to Dolly

Travel Alert for Egypt

February 21, 2014

The U.S. Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the risks of traveling to Egypt due to continuing political and social unrest. This Travel Alert supersedes the Travel Alert issued on January 30, 2014, and will expire on May 22, 2014.

Based on an assessment of the security situation in Egypt, the Department of State lifted the ordered departure status for U.S. Embassy personnel on November 6, 2013. The State Department lifted ordered departure status for U.S. Consulate General Alexandria on December 16, 2013. However, Consulate General personnel are based out of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo while required facility security upgrades are made.

Political unrest, which intensified after the July 2013 change of government, is likely to continue in the near future. Demonstrations have on numerous occasions resulted in violent clashes between security forces and protesters and between protesters supporting rival factions, some of which have resulted in deaths and injuries to those involved and in property damage. Participants have generally thrown rocks, and Molotov cocktails, with security forces responding with tear gas. However, police on occasion have used live ammunition as a crowd control measure and in response to live ammunition used by demonstrators against police. Most violent protests have occurred in major metropolitan areas, including Cairo and its suburbs, Alexandria, and Port Said. Gender-based violence in and around protest areas, where women have been the targets of sexual assault, poses an ongoing concern. There has been a recent and notable increase in the use of explosive devices to target police or other government institutions or individuals, which have resulted in casualties and damage to infrastructure. Additionally, police officers have frequently been the targets of drive-by shootings that endanger bystanders as well.

The security situation in North Sinai, including the major east-west coastal highway and the towns of El Arish, Shaykh Zuwayd, El Gorah and Rafah, has been marked by ongoing violent attacks on Egyptian security personnel and by continuing and frequently intense security operations against the sources of violence. The U.S. Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens to avoid travel to North Sinai.

Libya evacuation decision 'minute by minute,' U.S. official says

(CNN) -- The U.S. military doubled the number of aircraft standing by in Italy if needed to evacuate Americans from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, Libya, CNN has learned.

A decision to evacuate as violence in the Libyan capital grows is "minute by minute, hour by hour," a defense official told CNN.

Fierce fighting swept across the city Sunday after armed men stormed the country's interim Parliament. The violence appeared to be some of the worst since the 2011 revolution that ousted longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi.

Four additional V-22 Osprey aircraft "arrived overnight" at the naval base in Sigonella, Italy, to join four V-22s and 200 Marines that had been moved there last week, a U.S. defense source said Monday.

U.S. Advises Americans to Put Off Travel to Israel

The United States government on Monday suggested that Americans avoid travel to Israel if possible because of the increasingly deadly Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza and the rockets fired into widespread parts of Israeli territory including cities.

A travel warning posted on the State Department website, which recommended that citizens “consider the deferral of non-essential travel” to Israel, essentially expanded a longstanding advisory urging American citizens to avoid travel to the Israeli-occupied West Bank and a stronger warning against travel to Gaza, where the Israeli military has been warring with Hamas and other Palestinian militants for the past two weeks.

“The security environment remains complex in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, and U.S. citizens need to be aware of the risks of travel to these areas because of the current conflict between Hamas and Israel,” the State Department warning said.

Shiite Militias Call for US, Turkey, Saudi Arabia Embassy Closure in Iraq

In a public statement made on Wednesday, Iraqi Shiite Militias have given the federal Iraqi government five days to close the embassies of the United States, Saudi Arabia and Turkey as a penalty for allegedly supporting extremist groups in Iraq.

According to a statement that has been released by all Shiite groups and militias in Iraq, the groups are pressuring Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to close the embassies in Baghdad or face the risk of having them attacked and destroyed.

“If the federal government of Iraq does not close the embassies of the US, Turkey and Saudi Arabia in Baghdad, we will shell their buildings and kill all the diplomats”, said the statement.

According to the statement, it has alleged that the mentioned countries are involved in supporting the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) militants in their attacks against the Iraqi Army.

Mortars and rockets would be more like it, but they would have to be closer to the compound. The other factor is helicopters and the Air Force/Navy air support. Really though, they could have and have mortared and rocketed the compounds anytime they got a mind to. It's hard to find a little white pick up truck among the other white pick up trucks with the mortar tube in the back when the shit is coming down on you.

U.S. evacuates embassy in Libya amid clashes

WASHINGTON — The State Department has shuttered the U.S. embassy in Libya and evacuated American staffers there as the security situation in the capital Tripoli deteriorates amid worsening clashes between rival militias.

The department said in a statement that American embassy staff left Tripoli on Saturday and traveled overland to neighboring Tunisia. Embassy operations in Tripoli will be suspended until the security situation improves, it said. Tripoli has been embroiled for weeks in inter-militia violence that has killed and wounded dozens on all sides. The fighting has been particularly intense at the city's airport.

The suspension marks the second time in a little more than three years that Washington has closed its embassy in Libya. In Feb. 2011, the embassy suspended operations amid the uprising that eventually toppled longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi.Adding:

US Warns Americans in Yemen to Leave Now

The U.S. government has renewed its warning to Americans in Yemen they should leave the country in response to an “extremely high” security threat “due to terrorist activity and civil unrest.”

“Terrorist organizations, including al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), continue to be active throughout Yemen. The U.S. government remains highly concerned about the possible attacks on U.S. citizens (whether visiting or residing in Yemen), and U.S. facilities, businesses, and perceived U.S. and Western interests,” the travel warning says. “An ongoing risk of kidnapping exists throughout Yemen.” ...

The State Department has been urging U.S. citizens to leave Yemen for months, with a similar travel advisory circulated in January. ...

Top U.S. officials have said that of al Qaeda’s affiliates, AQAP is among the greatest threats to the U.S. homeland. One of its members, Ibrahim al-Asiri, is believed to be a master bomb maker, implicated in several bomb plots. Last week the State Department announced it had added a Norwegian-born bomb maker and member of AQAP to its designated terror list.

US extends offensive against Islamic State militants and Al-Qaeda using Twitter, FacebookThe United States has launched a social media offensive against the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, setting out to win the war of ideas by ridiculing the militants with a mixture of blunt language and sarcasm.Diplomats and experts are the first to admit that the digital blitz being waged on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube will never be a panacea to combat the jihadists. But US officials see social media as an increasingly crucial battlefield as they aim to turn young minds in the Muslim world against groups like IS and Al-Qaeda.For the past 18 months, US officials have targeted dozens of social network accounts linked to Islamic radicals, posting comments, photos and videos and often engaging in tit-for-tat exchanges with those which challenge America. USA Today U.S. govt warns citizens of terror plot in UgandaAmericans in Uganda are being advised by the U.S. government to stay at home or move to a safe location as Ugandan authorities attempt to foil a possible terror attack. Ugandan authorities reported the discovery of an an-Shabab terrorist cell in Kampala, Uganda, on Saturday morning. "We are continuing our engagement with Ugandan authorities as we seek to assess the scope of the disrupted al-Shabab terrorist plot and whether there are members of the cell still at large," the U.S. Embassy in Uganda wrote in a message on its website. "As a cautionary measure, and to give authorities time to put their heightened security measures in place, we urge all U.S. citizens to continue to shelter in place through this evening." Last week, al-Shabab, an Islamist extremist group linked to al-Qaeda, vowed to revenge the killing of its former leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane, after the U.S. confirmed it took him out in an airstrike.

REUTERS Al Qaeda-Linked Militants In Yemen Fire Rocket Towards U.S. Embassy, Say Revenge For Drone Strike

SANAA (Reuters) - An al Qaeda splinter group launched a rocket attack on the U.S. embassy in Sanaa on Saturday, injuring several guards, to retaliate for what it said on social media was a U.S. drone strike in a northern province the day before.

The rocket landed 200 meters from the heavily fortified embassy, which lies in a compound surrounded by high walls, hitting members of the Yemeni special police force who guard the site. At least two were injured, police said.

The attacker fired the rocket from a M72 light anti-tank weapon from a car before speeding away, a police source told Reuters.

Several hours after the attack, Ansar al-Sharia, an affiliate of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), said on its Twitter account it had targeted the embassy with a rocket, injuring several guards and damaging a vehicle.

U.S. warns travelers to avoid Acapulco

MEXICO CITY — The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a security message Friday warning U.S. citizens to avoid the Pacific resort of Acapulco because of violence and protests.

In yet another blow to a coastal city once favored by U.S. movie stars and jet-setters in the 1950s and ‘60s, the embassy said its personnel “have been instructed to defer non-essential travel to Acapulco, by air or land,” and added that it “cautions U.S. citizens to follow the same guidelines.”

The alert noted that “protests and violent incidents continue in Guerrero state in response to the disappearance of 43 students there.”

Demonstrators have blocked highways to Acapulco, hijacked buses and blockaded the city’s airport to demand the government find the students who disappeared Sept. 26 in the nearby city of Iguala. Prosecutors say local police working for a drug gang probably turned the students over to gang members, who may have killed them and burned their bodies.

Canadian Embassy in Egypt closes over security

CAIRO — The Canadian Embassy in Cairo has closed over security concerns, a day after the British Embassy suspended its services over safety worries.

The Canadian Embassy announced its closure through a message on its main telephone number Monday. An Egyptian security official told The Associated Press that Canadians asked for all roads around the embassy shut down and more security. He said they would increase security, but the roads couldn’t close.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he wasn’t authorized to speak to journalists.

The British Embassy closed its offices to the public Sunday and Monday. Both embassies are in Cairo’s Garden City neighborhood. The nearby U.S. Embassy remained open.

West Bank Attack Targets U.S. Consulate Security Vehicle

TEL AVIV—A group of Israeli settlers pelted a U.S. consulate security vehicle with rocks near a West Bank settlement during a visit Friday to investigate allegations that olive trees belonging to Palestinians had been uprooted, according to U.S. and Israeli officials.

The confrontation between U.S. guards and armed settlers—the first of its kind in recent memory—didn’t result in any injuries.

A consulate spokesman said the U.S. is “deeply concerned” by the incident, and that the U.S. is offering video footage to aid in the Israeli investigation.

Photographs provided by a Palestinian escort showed the black U.S. consulate vehicle, a Chevrolet Suburban, with a dent on the hood and scarred on the side from the melee.

US embassy issues threat warning for Indonesia's Surabaya

The US embassy in Indonesia warned Saturday of a potential threat against American interests in country's second biggest city Surabaya.

"The US Embassy has been made aware of a potential threat against US-associated hotels and banks in Surabaya, Indonesia," the embassy said in a statement published on its website.

"The US Embassy recommends heightened vigilance and awareness of one's surroundings when visiting such facilities," it added, without providing any further details.

Indonesia has waged a crackdown on extremist groups over the past decade following attacks against Western targets, including the 2002 Bali bombings -- a campaign that has been credited with weakening key networks.

But in recent months authorities have raised concerns that a wave of potential jihadist sympathisers is emerging from the world's most populous Muslim nation.

US Embassy in Yemen Closed Until Further Notice

(SANA'A, Yemen) -- The U.S. Embassy in Yemen will be closed until further notice, days after fighting and the resignation of a significant portion of the country's government leadership put its stability in question.

The U.S. State Department says that the personnel working at the embassy have not been evacuated from the country. Instead, the statement means only that the embassy is not open for normal business.

A statement from the embassy attributes the decision to the resignation of the Yemeni president, prime minister and cabinet, as well as "ongoing security concerns." As such, the embassy says it will be "unable to provide routine consular services" and will be limited in its ability to "assist with emergency cases involving U.S. citizens."

The State Department warned Americans in Yemen of the "high security threat level" due to "terrorist activities and civil unrest." Americans are being urged to exercise caution, be vigilant, and take extra security measures at all times in all areas.
