“Epstein – an affluent member of the Jewish faith – acquired the passport in the 1980s, when hijackings were prevalent, in connection to Middle East travel,” Epstein’s attorney Marc Fernich insisted in a 9-page memo. “The passport was for personal protection in the event of travel to dangerous areas, only to be presented to potential kidnappers, hijackers or terrorists should violent episodes occur.”

Then why hang on to it? It's expired. Doesn't look like him any more. Why lock it in a safe instead of burning it and destroying it?
It doesn't pass the sniff test. Was he that big of a deal and filthy rich back then when he was barely out of teaching math at that swanky school? Maybe up and coming, but such a big deal that kidnappers would care about him?

He would hand the Austrian (or the Saudi Arabian) passport to the hijackers with $50,000 inside, like a tip, to protect himself. Epstein was very clever that way.

NBC found some old footage in their archives.

I don't think the link above is right. It was on Morning Joe. Trump and Epstein partying.

Edit, pick on the Twitter link to go to video.

A Palm beach Sheriff’s deputy told me for my series that their work release detail involved standing outside his “office” and signing visitors — including women — in and out. They never checked what he was doing in that office and the logs mysteriously disappeared. /1

"Worst Deal In History" depends from whose perspective. I doubt Epstein protested.
To which Trump replied, Fuck the law. I don't give a fuck about the law. I want my fucking money.

I am with Stern. There had to be something in this for Acosta.

My husband and I have spent hours discussing this. So I held my nose and went and read Acosta's Wiki page. After graduating from HLS, he went to Kirkland and Ellis for a few years (making good money as an associate but not millions) then he went to work in the White House (again, not making stellar money). Then he was appointed USA for the Southern District of Florida towards the end of Shrub's administration (not big bucks either). From there he became Dean of the Law School at Florida International University (I have no idea what his compensation was there), and then on to run? the largest Hispanic owned bank in Florida.

None of these jobs will make you filthy rich (except maybe the last one). On the surface, Acosta doesn't seem to have sought positions that would make him wealthy, especially in an expensive city like Miami. It would be interesting if some enterprising reporter checked out where he lives and the vehicles he owns, etc.

But Mr. Filly agrees with you and Stern. However, I cannot figure out what was Acosta gained from this shameful act. Perhaps his lack of courtroom experience caused him to rely on his line prosecutors, who seemed greatly intimidated by Epstein's lawyers (that's another big problem in and of itself). Perhaps Main Justice was pressuring Acosta (for what reason?) In sum, my gut tells me there had to be some benefit to Acosta, but I don't yet see what it was.

Epstein is going to face a serious punishment. After all, NY kills for selling loose cigarettes.

Also look to the family. Like with Barr, there's not really much in it for him, but at least one of his kids got a job in the administration.

Are you referring to Barr's kid or Acosta's? I find it hard to believe Barr is doing all of this shit for a government job for his kid. I think Acosta's kids are still kinda young, and were certainly much younger in 2007.

Barr is a true believer. He's happy to do all this for free. I knew we were in big trouble when twitler showed interest in him.

Silly prosecutors: if you are gonna fake a passport, of course you're gonna put some fake stamps on it!

I heard someone say that Epstein testified in a deposition that he spent the 80s "finding money for people." The rumor was that he was turning over information to Adnan Khashoggi, the infamous Saudi Arms dealer who was estimated to be worth about $4 billion in 1980. The idea was that Khashoggi suspected people were stealing money from him. I'm guessing that Epstein would provide info to Khashoggi about Bear Sterns clients who were depositing large sums of money with the brokerage firm? IDK, just a rumor. But a tantalizing one.

Jeffrey Epstein hired Michael Miller of Steptoe & Johnson, a large law firm, to represent him in the Southern District of New York criminal case.

Miller is a well-known white collar criminal defense attorney and trial lawyer.
:?: Is what Epstein's accused of considered white collar crimes?

Actually, I was thinking the same thing. A decoy passport without any entry/exit stamps wouldn't work nearly as well as one with.

I'd also read somewhere that he described himself as a "financial bounty hunter." To me, the decoy passport story makes sense. He made enough money to consider himself a "target" and probably hired a security consultant that recommended steps like this.

I think the real story is what the government said about the passport - It's not a big deal on its own, but the fact that he has contacts who can get him a very high quality fake/decoy passport like this makes him that much more of a flight risk.

The prosecutors are apparently egging Epstein on to represent he isn't a citizen of another country. Makes me think the U.S. government has information it isn't revealing that he is. That would be a huge lie.

Having a bogus passport? Isn't that a Federal offense unless one works for ...?

This is just weird bullshit.

I don't believe possessing a fake passport or other document is a crime. Using one to enter/exit the US would be. Using it outside the US is probably a gray area, I think.
