Next stop, Necker Island: Barack and Michelle Obama are all smiles as they arrive in the British Virgin Islands on Richard Branson's private jet and head straight for his lavish private island retreat

Barack and Michelle Obama touched down in British Virgin Islands on Monday
The couple posed happily for a photograph with airport staff after their arrival
They flew in to the Caribbean on host Sir Richard Branson's private plane
Former first couple will spend some time on his private retreat, Necker Island
British billionaire Branson campaigned against Trump throughout his campaign
They spent the weekend with friends in Palm Springs, California, after President Trump's inauguration on Friday

Branson's place is amazing, my production partners produced Google's Larry Page's wedding on that island and it was magical. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/story?id=3969679

In that story they mentioned that in Palm Springs, "The couple spent the weekend relaxing at the home of Spanish ambassador James Costos and his interior designer partner Michael Smith after taking part in President Donald Trump's inauguration on Friday" :P

The former president was pictured in his armored Secret Service SUV as he left a country club gym where he had worked out before heading to the course

Have fun Barack and Michelle!!

Go Malia!
Malia Obama joins Dakota Access pipeline protest at Sundance
By TONY HICKS | thicks@bayareanewsgroup.com |
PUBLISHED: January 27, 2017 at 1:14 pm | UPDATED: January 27, 2017 at 3:15 pm

The 18-year-old daughter of recent President Obama was praised by fellow protester, Shailene Woodley, who also attended the event at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. “It was amazing to see Malia,” the actress told Democracy Now.

“To witness a human being and a woman coming in to her own outside of her family and outside of the attachments that this country has on her, but someone who’s willing to participate in democracy because she chooses to,” Woodley said. “Because she recognizes, regardless of her last name, that if she doesn’t participate in democracy, there will be no world for her future children.”

Malia left her family’s Caribbean vacation to attend the festival, before starting her internship for producer Harvey Weinstein in February, according to the New York Daily News. Woodley has been a mainstay at the protests, even getting arrested at one point. I’d like to see someone try arresting Malia with her Secret Service detail standing there.

The proposed pipeline would cross a river near Native American land and opposition is concerned it could contaminate the drinking water and damage Native American cultural sites. President Obama halted the project until an alternate route could be found. Earlier this week, President Trump signed an executive order allowing the construction to move forward as originally planned.

The Obamas Are Back from Vacation and Settling into Their Rented D.C. Home

No more backwards hats for Barack Obama.

The former president and wife Michelle Obama returned home to their new $4.3 million home in Washington, D.C. on Thursday night after enjoying a post-presidency vacation in Palm Springs and the British Virgin Islands.

The former first couple, who spent the past 10 days on Virgin billionaire Richard Branson’s private island, flew out from Tortuga island by helicopter on Thursday before boarding Branson’s jet headed for Washington.

Later, their motorcade was seen pulling up to their nine-bedroom mansion in Washington’s Kalorama neighborhood, where a neighbor had posted a welcome home sign, according to the Daily Mail. The Obamas will now be living just two blocks away from Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s new home.

I have a strong suspicion they could walk back into the white house at this point and no-one but birthers would give a damn.

French voters call on Barack Obama to run in country's presidential election
Website and poster campaign calls on French people to make a 'radical choice' by signing a petition — already 30,000 signatures strong — asking former US President to run in leadership race
2 days ago

Voters in France are vying for Barack Obama to become their next President, in a wild bid to bring about a “sixth Republic” in the French presidential elections this year.

A website and poster campaign launched on Monday, titled “Obama17”, calls on French people to make the "radical choice" of signing a petition asking that the former US President to run for the position of 25th head of state in the 2017 leadership race.

More than 30,000 people have so far signed the petition, and photos of posters mounted around Paris have been widely shared on social media.

The creators of the campaign, four Parisians in their thirties who have decided to remain anonymous, said the idea arose from growing discontentment with the choice of candidates, and a desire to "make people smile" amid "repeated scandals" coming out of the approaching election. <SNIP>

As Realist might say,
Holder: Obama is 'ready to roll'
By Edward-Isaac Dovere 02/28/17 03:07 PM EST

Barack Obama is getting closer to making his public reappearance in politics, his friend and former Attorney General Eric Holder said on Tuesday. Holder said he’s been talking to the former president about ways — including fundraising and interacting with state legislators — that could help the new National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which Obama asked Holder to chair last year.

“It’s coming. He’s coming,” Holder said, speaking to reporters at a briefing for the new group. “And he’s ready to roll.” Throughout, Holder said, Obama “will be a more visible part of the effort.” Holder also predicted that the usual pattern of the party in the White House losing state legislative seats in off-year elections would hold next year, but “I expect we’ll see that on steroids with President Trump.”

The NDRC is looking to be an intensified central force for Democrats to tackle their disadvantage in gerrymandering. The mission is to direct resources into winning targeted state elections, push ballot initiatives for nonpartisan district-drawing commissions and wage legal challenges to existing maps. The hope is that this would put Democrats in a stronger position in state houses, but also in the U.S. House of Representatives, if districts are drawn that more accurately represent the distribution of the popular vote, citing statistics that showed Republicans winning 49 percent of the vote in those elections but getting 55 percent of the seats in the 2016 elections.

Marc Elias, a top election lawyer who’s advising the group, said that in addition to joining existing challenges to state laws, they’re already prospecting for states where they could file new lawsuits, predicting they’ll file more before the end of 2017.

Daily Beast
Report: Obama Books Bidding War Hits $60M

The bidding war for rights to two memoirs by Barack and Michelle Obama has reportedly reached a record sum of $60 million, according to the Financial Times. The former president and first lady are writing separate books but will jointly sell the global rights to their products. According to the report, major publishers like Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, HarperCollins are in the running, with Penguin Random House leading the battle. A $60-million sum would far outpace other deals offered to former presidents—as FT noted, Bill Clinton was paid $15 million for his post-White House memoir, and George W. Bush received $10 million for his.

Trump could get that much not to write a memoir. 8-)

All it would take is for everyone in America who would rather drink hot tar than read anything Trump wrote to chip in a quarter.

NPR
Penguin Random House Announces Book Deal With The Obamas

Penguin Random House announced late Tuesday that it will publish two books, one written by former President Barack Obama and one by former first lady Michelle Obama. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but reports on the bidding war estimated numbers in the tens of millions.

Penguin has published books by the Obamas previously, and the publisher's CEO said in a statement:
"We are absolutely thrilled to continue our publishing partnership with President and Mrs. Obama. With their words and their leadership, they changed the world, and every day, with the books we publish at Penguin Random House, we strive to do the same. Now, we are very much looking forward to working together with President and Mrs. Obama to make each of their books global publishing events of unprecedented scope and significance."
The publisher said it will donate one million books in the Obama family's name to First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides educational materials to children in need. According to a press release from Penguin Random House, the Obamas will also donate a "significant portion" of the books' proceeds to charities, including the Obama Foundation.

Barack Obama Spotted Out for First Time Since Denying Donald Trump’s Unsubstantiated Wiretap Claims

Barack and Michelle Obama were all smiles in the wake of President Donald Trump‘s unsubstantiated wiretapping claims.

The couple stepped out in Washington, D.C. on Sunday in their first appearance since a spokesman for the former president denied allegations that he ordered wiretapping in Trump Tower during the election – claims President Donald Trump made in a string of tweets without citing any evidence.

A low-key, leather jacket-clad Obama, 55, and 53-year-old Michelle waved and smiled as they left the National Gallery of Art, appearing at ease despite the recent media storm surrounding Trump’s unsubstantiated claims.

Is it irrational that I am so fearful for the safety of the Obama family? Every time I see a photo of them out and about, I feel a moment of panic.
